As a parting gift to a fan favorite on his farewell season, we’ve finally managed to match up Tyreque Jones’ #21 with his article release date in the countdown. Miracles do happen! Let’s get straight to business:
#26 (21), Tyreque Jones, 6th Year Senior, Nickel
Stats
Height: 6’ 2”
Weight: 205 lbs
High School: San Gorgonio HS, San Bernardino, CA
How’d he get to the Blue™?
Look, some recruiting happened, blah blah blah, official offer, he’s been here since forever. I also stand by my assessment from last season that his recruiting headshot is among the best of all-time, no cap.
Nickname
“Stretch”
The tradition continues.
Look-a-like
Our generator originally said Damian Lillard, but Dame doesn’t seem to smile in photos, so we went with the second option, Jamie Foxx.
Career Highlights
While 2021 was a season of career highs for Mr. Jones, one of the highest had to be his senior night against New Mexico. After holding New Mexico to a punt on the opening series of the game, Tyreque blocked the ensuing punt, then ran it in himself.
Self-five!
2022 Prospectus
Right before fall camp, Coach Avalos announced at MWC Media Days that Tyreque Jones was shifting from Safety to the Nickel position for the ensuing season. Jones will be replacing the graduated Kekaula Kaniho, who was a mainstay at the position. Both Nickels currently listed on the roster are 6th year seniors (the other being Roman Kafentzis, check in tomorrow for his #20!).
Boise State utilizes the Nickel in a variety of integral ways, and coaches have often reinforced the need for the Nickel to be a flexible leader. Jones’ seniority and familiarity with the defense should put fans at ease heading into the fall. He and JL Skinner decided to go out for one last ride with the defense, and the Boise State coaches are raving about the possibilities.
Is he on Twitter?
