Boise State roster countdown 2020: Day 8, Markel Reed

It’s the 2020 countdown, yes...but we’re counting down to 2021 because what even is this year?

#8, Markel Reed, Sophomore, CB

Height: 6’

Weight: 179 lbs (+3)

High School: Temple HS, Temple, TX

How’d he get to The BlueTM?

The once Texas Tech recruit committed to the Broncos after the current NFL head coach—Kliff Kingsbury—was dismissed from Texas Tech. (Speaking of that, isn’t weird that Kingsbury got fired from TT for being quite mediocre only to land an arguably better job for the Arizona Cardinals? Life, amiright?!) Mr. Reed was a former three-star recruit from Temple, Texas who held offers from: TT (natch), Purdue, Arkansas, Baylor, Kansas State, Rutgers, and Vanderbilt. He also had an offer from Cornell (you may have heard of it).

Again taking a cue from Twitter. No idea where Keenan is.

UFC Bantamweight contender Aljamain Sterling

Career highlights

Appeared in 11 games for the Broncos in 2019, making 13 tackles (one for loss) and forced a fumble. During his senior year he was first-team All-District 12-6A. As a junior he picked off three passes and broke up 13 more, coupled with 27 tackles. I assume his productive junior year lead to fewer stats his senior year.

2021 Prospectus

I’ve already name-dropped Reed a couple of times during the countdown and for good reason—I think he’s the next big star at CB for the Broncos, but he’s got to be just a little bit patient before he’s an every-down guy. Jalen Walker and Avery Williams are the presumptive starters, but as you can see from the updated career highlights, Reed played in all but 3 games last season for the Broncos and looked very much up-to-the-task. Reed likely had some freshman moments in 2019, but I didn’t really notice them as he looked poised and ready for that spotlight. Since the 2020 season will be a mulligan, I anticipate the 2021 iteration to feature an even more seasoned Reed and even more solid depth in the secondary. He might not be a “full-time” starter until the seniors are gone, but I think he’s got full-time starter chops right this minute.

Is he on Twitter?

Completely made up fact

Temple, TX—where Markel hails from, is only 63 miles from Water Temple, TX. Never, ever go there.
