With 43 days left until kickoff (snicker), we’ll take a look at our potential future starting punter (P1?)—Gavin Wale

#43, Gavin Wale, RS Freshman, K/P

Stats

Height: 6’2”

Weight: 179 lbs (+4)

High School: Coronado High School, Henderson, NV

How’d he get to The BlueTM?

Followed his heart and his cousin (Sean) to The Blue. Wale was one of a small faction of “late” recruits to the 2019 recruiting class in that he signed on the “old” national signing day after taking a visit in late January. His (and the Broncos) patience paid off, as Wale was the #21 punter in the country according to 247Sports. A selection to the all-state team as a senior, Wale also garnered All-Southeast League honors as a kicker and punter, with an average punt of 43.42 yards. As a junior, Wale also nabbed all-league honors for his punting and kicking prowess. Wale chose the Broncos over service academies Air Force and Army.

Nickname

”Killer”

C’mon...this one writes itself.

Look-alike

Brock “100 yard pick-six” Osweiler

Career highlights

Voted first-Team all-state by Las Vegas Review-Journal after senior season. First-team All-Southeast League as a senior. First-team all-league as kicker and punter as a junior in 2017.

2020 Prospectus

Punting last season wasn’t that bad...eventually. In the beginning of the year, the Broncos resided firmly within the city limits of Shanksville and calls for a change of area code were seen often across the Bronco twitterverse. In fact, through September of 2019 I think people were ready to burn Wale’s redshirt via coup, but just like with the O-line play things slowly started to get better and by the end of the year the punting game was in the “acceptable” camp. Now, I don’t like to throw any guys under the bus and like I said, the punting improved drastically as the year progressed (and frankly, maybe the punter wasn’t the main issue with the wonky, short punts)...things got fixed, Wale preserved his redshirt and heading into 2020 we should see Wale play a bigger role if not seize the starting position from Mr. Velazquez. Wale’s got plenty of leg (as you can see below) and should be a major asset to the kicking corps moving forward (especially because he’ll allow kickers to not pull double-duty).

Is he on Twitter?

You better believe it.

Completely made up fact

With this surname, one might think that the Wale family hails from the country of Wales, but this isn’t the case. They actually emigrated from the country of Giant Sea Mammal which is just to the north of Wales.
