With 36 days left until kickoff, we’ll take a look at a newbie with a pretty familiar surname. Survey says: Gavin Wale
#36, Gavin Wale, True Freshman, K/P
Weight: 175 lbs
High School: Coronado High School, Henderson, NV
How’d he get to The BlueTM?
Followed his heart and his cousin (Sean) to The Blue. Wale was one of a small faction of “late” recruits to the 2019 recruiting class in that he signed on the “old” national signing day after taking a visit in late January. His (and the Broncos) patience paid off, as Wale was the #21 punter in the country according to 247Sports. A selection to the all-state team as a senior, Wale also garnered All-Southeast League honors as a kicker and punter, with an average punt of 43.42 yards. As a junior, Wale also nabbed all-league honors for his punting and kicking prowess. Wale chose the Broncos over service academies Air Force and Army.
Not a difficult nickname to orca-strate.
Brock “Too Tall” Osweiler aka Brock “100 yard pick-six” Osweiler
Voted first-Team all-state by Las Vegas Review-Journal after senior season. First-team All-Southeast League as a senior. First-team all-league as kicker and punter as a junior in 2017.
Special teams is probably the most-maligned unit on the Boise State football team (and honestly, for good reason), but from listening to the coaches talk—they know it, and if you recall your G.I. Joe clearly—knowing is half the battle. The Broncos actually don’t often spend scholarships (at least at first) on kickers, so they obviously saw something they really liked in Wale, and given his national rankings...it’s not hard to see what. So, given Wale’s considerable talents and perhaps because of his surname, I expect him to push for a starting role quickly in fall camp. Quinn Skillin is gone and no sense in overloading the already full plate of Joel Velazquez with a talent like Wale in the wings. Just get those punts off quickly, young man.
Is he on Twitter?
Yep. And he can placekick okay as well.
Completely made up fact
Daily, Gavin wakes up and has to deal with hundreds of protestors outside of his Henderson, NV home, who’ve vowed to not relent until there are no more Wales in captivity.
