Boise State roster countdown 2017: Day 13, Marques Evans

NCAA Football: Cactus Bowl-Boise State vs Baylor Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

#13, Marques Evans, True Freshman, DB

Stats

Height: 5’11”

Weight: 174 lbs.

High School: Newbury Park High School, Newbury Park, CA

How’d he get to The Blue™?

Well, he took the express lane, that's for sure. The 3-star cornerback was rated #11 in the west at his position by Scout when he committed on my birthday last year (August 15) and within a couple of months he was on campus and ready to contribute. As a junior and a senior at Newbury Park High, Evans garnered All-Camino League honors by locking folks down. His senior season, he hit for the DB cycle by recording 38 tackles, 2 INTs, 10 pass breakups, one fumble recovery, and a blocked field goal. Evans chose the Broncos over offers from Hawaii and Nevada.

2017 Prospectus

Does arriving on campus in time for spring ball help a guy’s chances of playing early? I don’t have full data on that, but my gut says it doesn’t hurt. By virtue of having more snaps under his belt, Evans is a little bit ahead of some of his true frosh peers and if the Broncos need to “go to the well” this year, I think Evans would be poised to make that leap. With the big 4 pretty well pencilled in (Harrison-Ducros, Young, Horton, Walker), I think Evans playing a ton of meaningful snaps at corner is probably at least a 2018 proposition, but I can see him playing special teams and making appearances in blowouts or so-called “dime packages” (not dime bags) as early as two weeks from now.

I always tend to root for the early-enrollees a bit harder out of the gate, as I’d like to see their hard work pay off and though I don’t think the Broncos will play nearly as many newbs this season as last (10), I think Evans has a bright future ahead of him either way. Evans shows good instincts, breaks on the ball very well, and has the type of frame that I think could fill out in Jamar Taylor or Kyle Wilson fashion.

Is he on Twitter?

Yes, and I think his little brother might be getting an offer soon

Completely made up fact

Instead of participating in the Book-it™ program as a child, Evans’ parents enrolled him in the Pick-it™ program. Every interception he recorded in pee wee football earned him a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut (*salad bar not included).
