Boise State roster countdown 2017: Day 33, Gabe Perez

We’ve gone over two-thirds of the way through this. Which is pretty amazing considering how long (and hot!) this summer has felt. Football can’t get here soon enough. With 33 days left we are going to take a look at a roving veteran—Gabe Perez

#33, Gabe Perez, RS Senior, OLB

Height: 6’ 4”

Weight: 246

High School: Valencia HS, Placentia, CA

How'd he get to the Blue™?

He did a little bit of everything while playing for Valencia HS. He rushed for 375 yards, four TDs. He also had 51 tackles, seven tackles-for-loss, and seven sacks. Out of high school he was a three-star recruit per Scout. His offer sheet included the likes of: Army, Colorado, Colorado State, Nevada, Utah and Utah State. Not too shabby for Mr. Perez.

“Mr. Utility”

His versatility has been duly noted and he’s going to be doing some other things for the Broncos.

Career Highlights

Mr. Perez’s accolades are a bit limited due to injury. In his rookie season, he appeared in 12 games. And he did some things: recorded 29 tackles (21 solo, eight of which were just in the Colorado State game), including seven for-loss and, two and a half sacks. As a true sophomore he had 20 solo tackles, nine assisted tackles, and three and a half sacks. He suffered an injury in his true junior year, but it was early enough to take a redshirt. His RS Junior year was in five games before getting injured—again.

2017 Prospectus

The official roster still has Mr. Perez listed as a STUD. But, due to the release of a pre-season depth chart for Mountain West Conference Media Summit, we know that he is shifting to an SLB spot. After ending two seasons with injury, I am curious if the move is to help preserve him going forward. Overall this is going to be a good move for Mr. Utility. While I am going to miss his neckroll roving the defensive front, seeing him rove in the SLB is going to be even more fun. It will be interesting to see if he’s got the speed to keep up with any slot receivers coming across the middle. But he certainly won’t lack for strength. As long as he can stay healthy, the LBs should be just fine.

Is he on Twitter?

I don’t believe so. I was able to find several Gabe Perezes, but none that I believe to be ours.

Completely made up fact

If there were three people involved in a duel, it is technically called a “truel.” If anyone wanted to challenge Mr. Gabe Perez to a duel, you best believe it would count as a three-person truel.
