Boise State roster countdown 2017: Day 64, Ben Vering

#64, Ben Vering, RS Freshman, OL

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 254 lbs.

High School: Capital High School, Boise, ID

How’d he get to The Blue™?

Well, he didn’t have to go far, that’s for sure. Vering was a two-way lineman for the county at SIC power Capital High School in Boise. As a junior, Vering was named an All-SIC honorable mention. He walked on to the Boise State team last August and redshirted the 2016 campaign.

2017 Prospectus

Ben is not the biggest or the most highly touted o-lineman, but when has that mattered? At 254 pounds I doubt he even scares many people but as has often been said, it's not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog. If you're alarmed that the Broncos are running a dogfighting ring don't worry, that was just a metaphor (or was that an idiom). In the past year, Vering has had the benefit of excellent coaching and is surrounded by enough talent to push him to be his best—so despite his small(ish) size, he could certainly pull a Hampton, Buhr, or Paradis and become a stalwart contributor.

It's almost not fair but by default I always tend to root for local walk-ons sometimes at the expense of others. I mean it's easier to see yourselves in these guys then some four-star out of Texas with 20 offers. These kids live right up the road and grew up as Bronco they’re getting an opportunity to compete for their hometown team and who wouldn’t like to see that come to fruition? Vering has some size to make up, but I don’t see why he can’t chip-in down the road as long as he sticks to his guns (another metaphor—or is it an idiom?)—after all, he’s pretty nimble for a big fella.

Is he on Twitter?

Yes, but don’t call him “four eyes”

Completely made up fact

Vering is the fifth most popular “Ben” in Boise, Idaho—behind Uncle Ben (Spiderman), Uncle Ben (rice), Gentle Ben, and surprisingly—Ben Kingsley.
