Down by 28 in the first half, the Broncos made a furious late comeback that ended up falling short.

Broncos came out flat early, and the Bulldogs couldn’t miss. With a furious finish, Boise State could not quite get the buckets to fall late to rally for the win away from Taco Bell Arena.

Broncos had been riding a seven game win streak, 4-0 mark in conference play, heading into the Save Mart Center of Fresno State. The Broncos’ performances away from the Taco Bell Arena have been solid against some tough competition. With the Nevada Wolf Pack going strong in conference play, it is crucial the Broncos bank every win they can.

They certainly did not start out the first half against the Bulldogs with the appearance of locking down the key wins.

The referees were calling the game tight as Justinian Jessup had two fouls within the first minute of the game. This caused a really early benching and put the Broncos on their heels. The foul trouble never really let up as, at one point in the first half, Broncos had 10 fouls to the Bulldog five. This was also exacerbated with a Chandler Hutchison technical foul (though not as a personal at first, but the refs went back and changed it to a personal) over a supposed goal tending miss on the refs. Bulldogs had hit the double-bonus early on.

Add in the cold shooting from, well, all the Broncos in the first half (8-29 on FGs and 5-15 for threes) and the fact that Fresno State could not miss. Fresno State’s Jahmel Taylor was 4-5 from beyond the arc (though the rest of the Bulldogs were 0-6). The Bulldogs stretched a lead all the way to 28 before the Broncos broke up the bleeding with a Dickinson three. The Broncos did whittle the deficit down to just a measly 22 before the half.

These were the stats at half:

Broncos’ second half effort was better, but still not quite enough to get them over the hump. Boise State hung around the 17 to19 point deficit for a good portion of the beginning of the second half. But James Reid picked up some crucial points for the Broncos to help get them within a low of nine points.

Unfortunately it was not quite enough as the Broncos fell to the Fresno State Bulldogs 80-89.

Hutchison fouled out with 14 points, 10 rebounds.

James Reid led all Bronco scorers with 17 points. He made three 3-pointers. He ended up fouling out in the end with foul-a-palooza.

Paris Austin had double-digit scoring with 14. He’s had some strong play the last few games and to see him drive to the lane as well as he did is encouraging.

Though hampered with early fouls, Jessup also joined the double-digit club late in the game with 12 points all on threes.

Broncos fall 11-5 overall, 4-1 MWC.
