As is the case every incoming fall season we see the leaves turn, the weather (thankfully) turn a little on cool side, and more sports beginning their seasons! One can only assume that you, dear reader, have been following along with the OBNUG countdown to the current king—football. What you may not know, or have been following, is that Boise State will be kicking off a season opener tomorrow (quite literally).
The Boise State women’s soccer team opens their season Friday versus in-state rival Idaho State. This marks the beginning of Head Coach Jim Thomas’ fourth season at the helm.
The Broncos look to rebound from a somewhat disappointing 7-9-4 finish from last season which put them in eighth place in the conference. The squad was projected to finish sixth and had even got a first place vote in the coach’s poll. However the schedule was quite the challenge as it included the likes of Ole Miss, Washington State, and Utah. Of the non-conference slate, nine opponents had winning records. Two of those opponents went on to the NCAA tournament.
This season Boise State was picked to finish fifth. The Broncos look to be on experienced as they return nine starters from last year’s team, though they will be missing All-Everything Brooke Heidemann. The team will be relying on Senior Hailey Devries (2015 All-Mountain West Second Team selection) and RS Junior Baylee Blaser (2015 All-Mountain West Honorable Mention) to lead.
San Diego State was voted first (which would be a repeat).
The match versus Idaho State will be at the Boas Soccer Center at 5 p.m. Free ice cream sandwiches, face painting, and 2016 calendars will be available for those who attend (for the first 500). While there are other ways to view the match (you can live-stream it here) nothing beats actual soccer on the pitch.
Good luck to the team and GO BRONCOS!
