Boise State numerical roster countdown 2015: Day 63, Riley Whimpey

Brian Losness-USA TODAY Sports

We’ll take a slight detour today and check in on true freshman LB #63 Riley Whimpey.

#63, Riley Whimpey, True Freshman LB (mission)

Riley Whimpey

Stats

Height: 6’2"

Weight: 205 lbs

High School: San Clemente High School, San Clemente, CA

How'd he get to the Blue™?

By doing his best Tanner Vallejo impersonation and utterly destroying the offensive players of Orange County to the tune of 172 tackles IN 14 GAMES. If my mathing is up to par, that’s 12.3 tackles per game. That set a new record at San Clemente. That goes along with 130 solo tackles, 5 sacks, 2 interceptions and 5 forced fumbles. To say he will be a force at LB is an understatement. His lone other offer was from Utah State, where is older brothers Kyle and Kevin attended school and played football.

Career Highlights

I already touched on this, but basically his career consists of tackling anything and everything in his wake. To go along with his 172 tackles at San Clemente, he racked up 101 total tackles, 34 being solo, totaling 8.4 tackles per game, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble at Lone Peak High School before moving to California. He was listed as a 3-star recruit by Scout and 247Sports and a 2-star recruit by Rivals, but was rated the #15 OLB in California and the #24 OLB in the West. That’s not too shabby considering the talent bed that California is. He was named CIF Souther Section Southwest Division Co-Defensive Player of the Year, Co-Defensive Player of the Year in Sea View League and All-Orange County First Team by the Orange County Register. Prior to leaving Utah, he was named to Utah’s 5A All-State Second Team along with first-team academic all-region his junior year. There are two things we can surmise from all of this. 1) Riley will be a monster for us, and 2) the California schools need to figure out a more efficient way to label these team awards.

2015 Prospectus

He won’t have a 2015 with the Broncos. WHHHHAAAA???!?! Oh that’s right, he’s headed on a mission and will return for the 2017 season. Basically, he is giving the MW time to prepare for his return. I don’t think that will be enough time for them, unfortunately.

Is he on Twitter?

He is definitely on Twitter and mildly active, though his handle is locked down, so I can’t embed anything. #sadpanda

Completely made up fact

Despite the last name, Mr. Whimpey prefers hot dogs. Nathan’s Hot Dogs to be exact. But more importantly, he is the President and Chairman of the Joey Chestnut fan club. He has not missed a contest since he started the club, Nathan’s Nibblers, in 2007, after watching the contest on tv. Sadly, he has relinquished the reins to another Wimpey so he may destroy MW offenses, after his religious duties of course.
