Editor's note: We love all our current and former Broncos and probably hope that one day our sons or daughters will be basking in blue and orange glory. That's why when Bronco great Alex Guerrero said he had a way to help the local kids achieve their football dreams, I said "I'm all ears" and then accepted a generous kickback offered to let him tell you all about this pretty sweet event.
For the last five years there have been dreams being formed on the gridiron by the local youth in Idaho. The 5th Annual Gridiron Dreams Football Academy is back this summer and is bringing back an impressive staff to help mentor young athletes in the Treasure Valley. Gridiron Dreams is a youth football camp started by myself and fellow Bronco great, Jerard Rabb. Gridiron Dreams is a camp that was developed for athletes by athletes, and features former Broncos with past and current NFL experience. This year’s camp will be held on Friday May 31st through Saturday June 1st at Meridian High School’s Warrior Stadium. Gridiron Dreams is for ages 7-18. The more experienced group (13-18) will receive two days of training on Friday and Saturday, while the optimist age group (7-12) will have one session on Saturday. There are a lot of youth football camps out there, but none who take pride in having every position group headlined by a mentor with NFL experience. What better way to learn, than from those who have achieved the highest level in the sport of football?
Along with the great football specific coaching, Gridiron Dreams also features a first class speed training session from Nike speed coach Rick Hagedorn from Speedburners. To add value to Gridiron Dreams, football skills are not the only subject being coached at these camps, Gridiron Dreams staff passes along wisdom on beating adversity, staying focused on school, and being the best person off of the field as possible. This is not your every day football camp—this is much more. On the roster for this years camp is first time coach and Chicago Bears first round pick in 2012 Shea McClellin. Marsing, Idaho native McClellin will be back in town in town after an impressive rookie season in the NFL. Some of the other names you may recognize are Tyrone Crawford of the Dallas Cowboys, Austin Pettis of the St. Louis Rams, All Pro Ryan Clady, Super Bowl Champ Daryn Colledge, Fiesta Bowl Champion Jared Zabransky and other Bronco greats you know and love. There is no doubt this camp will be an experience that will be a highlight in someone’s life for a long time.
Overall what is great about this camp is that anyone from elite college prospects, to beginners trying to learn the game of football can attend and leave a better athlete and person.
