After watching Joe Southwick not throw away the Boise State starting quarterback job at Saturday night's scrimmage, I can say with 99 percent certainty that Southwick will be named the starter for Broncos vs. Spartans and Broncos vs. everyone else.
The Boise State quarterback competition is over.
Congratulations, allegedly, to Southwick - a player who is unlike Kellen Moore in so many ways but like him in one very important way: He is quarterbacking our favorite team. Ergo, I like him. Or at least I will root for him. He was not my number one choice, but my number one choice made some throws that greatly disturbed me and greatly pleased the defense. More than getting what I want from a personnel standpoint, I would rather get what I want from a wins standpoint. Southwick can do that for Boise State. Wins may not come with style points or scoreboard points, but at the end of the day, do we need the fluff? No, although our fairweather brethren may disagree.
The Boise State quarterback competition is over. Long live the Boise State quarterback competition.
Because, really, will the competition ever be over? The only way I see the Internet comments not mentioning Nick Patti or Grant Hedrick ever again is if Joe Southwick makes no mistakes and plays lights out every game and every snap. You could say that Bronco Nation has high expectations for Joe Southwick. But really, what Bronco Nation has is a quick hook and a rough draft of a Nick Patti manifesto should Southwick look anything less than extraordinary this season. I hope I'm wrong, and for Southwick's sake, I am actually wrong quite often.
Congratulations, Joe Southwick.
Now go do amazing things.
