San Diego State shocks Boise State on the blue, 21-19

Otto Kitsinger III

Guess we all have a reason to count San Diego State as a future conference rival now.

The Aztecs came into Bronco Stadium and left with an upset win, dashing Boise State's BCS-by-default hopes and handing the Broncos their second home loss in two years, 21-19. Colin Lockett scored for SDSU on the opening kickoff, and Adam Muema capped a less-than-10-yards drive for another Aztec touchdown, as San Diego State's special teams, defense, and running game provided the difference.

Boise State got two touchdown runs from D.J. Harper and a touchdown pass from Joe Southwick to Dan Paul. The two-point margin came by way of a failed two-point try on Boise State's opening touchdown (swinging gate gaffe) and a failed make-up two-pointer on the Broncos' final touchdown.

BSU scored to make it 21-19 with just over five minutes remaining and never again saw the football.

Aside: Let's burn those orange jerseys. They are the worst.

It was over when ...

Adam Muema picked up fourth-and-two near midfield with under two minutes to go to seal the win. I love, love, love the decision by Rocky Long to go for it in that situation, especially since failing would have meant prime field position for a last-minute Bronco drive.

Box score hero ...

D.J. Harper had 80 yards and two touchdowns, and Muema had 127 and the one score.

What happens next ...

The Broncos travel to Hawaii for a healing blowout. The Broncos, Aztecs, Fresno State Bulldogs, and Air Force Falcons are in a four-way tie atop the conference each with one loss in MW play.
