Headline-maker: Billy Winn
Browns defensive tackle Billy Winn deserves credit for doing something that few NFL teams probably figured he would do this year: Start. Not only has Winn seen the starting lineup, he has seen the starting lineup in five out of five games. His opportunity may have come at the expense of incumbent Phil Taylor's injury, but Winn has made the most of it. Did you see him chasing down the ball carrier last Thursday against Baltimore? Did you catch him hassling Eli Manning on Sunday? Shades of Golden Era Boise State, if you ask me.
Elsewhere ...
- The NFL made a one-for-one Boise State trade when Miami released wide receiver Legedu Naanee and San Diego signed vetern corner Chris Carr. Naanee's writing was written on the wall when he fumbled after his lone reception two weeks ago versus Arizona in a game the Dolphins eventually lost in overtime. Carr's opportunity came when the Charger secondary reprised the TV series MASH.
- Rams safety Quintin Mikell was down on the turf for several minutes of his team's Thursday night win over the Cardinals after sustaining a blow to the head. Mikell suffered a concussion but is otherwise alright - "otherwise" meaning "besides the brain trauma."
- Bears defensive end Shea McClellin continued a recent stretch of lying low and registering no stats for the second straight week. He lie even lower this week as Chicago is on a bye.
- Tampa Bay running back Doug Martin and Detroit quarterback Kellen Moore - two of Boise State's highest profile rookies - were both on a bye last week. That would explain why your Sunday felt incomplete.
- Bengals safety George Iloka was inactive for the first time this year, while Cardinals offensive tackle Nate Potter was on the field for the first time all season. Falcons tight end Tommy Gallard, not to be outdone, had his finest statistical game of the year, targeted twice by Matt Ryan and catching one pass.
- Billy Winn (Cleveland), Quintin Mikell (St. Louis), Daryn Colledge (Arizona), and Ryan Clady (Broncos) all got the start for their respective teams. Kyle Wilson (Jets) is expected to start tonight on Monday Night Football against the Texans.
