Drama-filled storylines in Saturday's game
Late nite football!
This week's game will be played at 8:30 p.m. local time. Halftime will be bed time. Overtime will be Sunday. Postgame we'll all be asleep.
When was the last time Rocky Long stayed up this late? 1960?
Why did CBS Sports Network schedule this one opposite FOX News at Nine? Apparently to accommodate a quadruple-header of college football, including Must Schedule At Decent Hour games like Florida Atlantic at Navy (1:30 kickoff) and SMU at UCF (5:00). That, and the CBS heads thought Boise was in the Pacific Time Zone.
Mountain West lead on the line!
Boise State is the only undefeated team in conference play, and San Diego State is one of three one-loss teams. Ipso facto, Craig Thompson will be watching this one with bated breath (or not, since both schools are dead to him). Speaking of which ...
Future Big East friends!
The Aztecs will be accompanying the Broncos to the Big East next season, meaning we all have to come up with lots of reasons to hate each other because we are going to be rivals by association for quite some time. Fish tacos are overrated! (There, I've done my part.)
Boise State's secondary woes!
The Broncos will be without third-best corner Bryan Douglas (torn ACL) and starting safety Lee Hightower (suspension mad lib) for this game and probably the rest of them, making for a rather icky case of deja vu for Bronco fans. Remember last year when Boise State's secondary depth was tested? Sure you do. In fact, the Broncos-Aztecs game was Game Two in the defensive backfield band-aid raid, following Game One's meltdown against TCU. I think Quaylon Ewing-Burton played a part, but I can't remember exactly because I have blocked it out of my mind.
Rocky Long on the blue turf!
Do you know why Boise State won't be wearing all blue at this weekend's game? It's because Rocky Long has dinosaur vision. Long's complaints about blue-on-blue were the impetus to the MW banning the Broncos from wearing blue monochromes. But what about all black jerseys at night? And then turning the lights off at the stadium? I think I'm on to something.
