As a Boise State and USC fan, that would be about as bad as it could get
But if he didn’t go to Stanford, I can’t see him going to UCLA.

Didn't he turn them down a few years back?
I seem to remember UCLA going after him before they hired Neuheisel…and Petersen turning them down. I won’t speak for anyone else, but if I were being pursued by UCLA, it would be an immediate no. Cost of living there is enormous, and UCLA isn’t even the top dog in town for college football.
If Petersen does leave this year, I don’t believe it will be for any of the current openings. All of them would be a step or two (or three in WSU’s case) backwards from the program he has built in Boise.
Thanks to Ohio State's president, I will never root for a Big Ten football program again (except in extenuating circumstances that aid my primary rooting interest).

"Cost of living there is enormous"
He could live pretty comfortably on $2M/year. I mean, he could buy a house making that kind of money and still have walking around money. Plus, I don’t know if he cares about anything besides work and family (I doubt it) but there are nice things about living in LA if you like cultural stuff (food, art, music, etc.).
I think UCLA went after Petersen, but I don’t know for certain. I can see Petersen wanting to build up a great program, because that’s what he’s doing in Boise, but then again he’s already doing that. As long as he thinks the program can continue to grow, I think he will stay in Boise.

Good Point...
Kindly allow me to rephrase…
Coach Pete probably would have no trouble affording to live there. His assistants, on the other hand, may have issues maintaining their current quality of life.
As for me…well… Given MY profession as well as my wife’s profession and those fields get paid in LA compared to cost of living in LA…well…let’s just say that the Chicago Cubs have a better chance of winning the world series next year than I do of even considering a move there. It would more or less amount to a 35% pay cut in terms of cash flow for bills and student loans.

I'm not saying New York is a terrible place
But if you try to make me eat any of that damned New York City salsa, things will get ugly.
Also, New York is a terrible place.

New York City salsa?
You sound like an old Pace Picante sauce commercial. I will agree that the only salsa that’s worthwhile around here is based on Latin rhythms. Any food besides Mexican though, I’ll take NYC over LA.

Actually...
I have a large number of relatives in East Peoria, Washington, Morton, Canton, nd Pekin…so yeah…
To me, Peoria area isn’t too bad (stay away from Bartonville) when compared to towns like Decatur, Kankakee, and Danville…but I’m used to Peoria and am there at least once a month. I can easily see someone from a larger city being ill at ease in towns like Peoria and Champaign due to the slower place and other cultural clashes.

Tazewell County!
Both of my parents grew up in Morton, IL and my 93 year-old grandmother still lives there. Talk about a town stuck in time…
Actually, I tend to compare Peoria to Boise, since they’re similar sizes. When you compare those two, Boise wins in a landslide. Peoria just seems characterless and depressed…Boise is beautiful.

I agree with you on the characterization...
Peoria IS depressed. They got hit pretty hard when the economy crashed. And Boise is most definitely beautiful. If my wife and I had comparable or better job options there to what we have now in Champaign, we’d be in Boise in a millisecond.

Not my words...
But the words of a few friends of mine who somehow think that Illinois should be potential BCS contenders.
I think they are delusional. Nothing about Illinois football the last three or four decades even hints at the ability to be a national power in football.
Champaign itself isn’t all bad…but there is almost nothing to do here for people that like the outdoors… And 90% humidity with 95 degree temps in summer is horrible.

My point, I think you missed it
Unless you really think NYC apartments are more spacious than LA apartments. Jimminy Christmas, my friend had a place in Queens which was half the size of my apartment at about the same price. It was the difference between a place in LA and a place in Boise. (Also, LA has a couple different cultures too.)

No, I got your point
I just had a snarky reply ready. NYC apartments are ridiculously priced for very little space, no doubt. My brother-in-law lives in LA and used to live in Manhattan. He currently has a very spacious one bedroom with a full living room and kitchen, which costs him the same as his undersized studion apartment in Manhattan had.

Of course, the one thing that people tend to forget is that it is expensive because people want to live there.

Depends on the part of New York...
There are good parts and bad parts and parts where the only way I would be there is if I were dead… but that holds true for most cities of all sizes. Boise is the rare exception where there isn’t really a true “bad” part of town.
The only time I’ve ever been to LA or any other part of California was on a two hour layover at LAX enroute to Boise (and then back home). The pilot’s warning on the first lashing there to “be careful if you leave the airport” combined with the insanely high price of food there when compared to other airports gives me plenty of reason to not really want to go to LA to live. I paid nine bucks for a Burger King value meal (not upsized). The following year enroute to Boise with a layover in Minneapolis the same meal at a Burger King there cost me only $5.50.

Two part response
1. I’ve spent some time in the “bad parts” of NYC…I worked several years in the heart of the South Bronx…and when I say South Bronx, I mean that South Bronx. What can I tell you about it? Great Caribbean food (Puerto Rican, Dominican, Jamaican, etc.).
2. No bad parts of Boise? I disagree. How about…everything topside of the bench? I will now wait for outrage from countless Nuggies.

The bench is where the valley floor shifts upwards about 50-60 feet to the south of the river.

All the old cottages on Kootenai and areas along Rose Hill are nice. The closer you get to Borah High School the worse it gets. A friend of mine went there and told me they had cockroaches which is seriously the only time I’ve ever heard of roaches in Boise

to be fair
the “bad” parts of boise are still relatively good by comparison. it’s not as if it’s the congo.
frankly, i wouldn’t mind living on the bench. the sketchiest part i lived in was on river street, right behind the community house. and, again, it’s not as if i feared for anything.
I lived in seattle for three years (moved back to boise for family). lived in West Seattle on Delridge just above White Center. talk about shady. when we first got there, the police were searching frantically up and down our street for someone or something. I didn’t think anything of it until i realized it was seattle, not boise, and that, possibly, there could be a legit reason that many cops were antsy to find whatever it was they were looking for. and my wife and i walked in downtown white center after dark. in retrospect, i’m surprised we didn’t get mugged.
BUT WAIT. The detailed benefits are not just your average dollars-under-the-table, or some lameass "we let some players sleep at an apartment on the floor with a coach's help" allegations. No, you get the hell out of here, Boise.

I lived in the Kingsbridge neighborhood of the Bronx for three years. There was an abandoned house two doors down from me that seemed to have a fire in it every few weeks. Best guess is that there were squatters in there smoking crack or something along those lines. Good times.

Ah, the Petersen rumor mill begins anew.
Officially, the worst time of the year. Now will people will say Pete only stayed here to see his project, Kellen, complete his improbable run at the record books and it is time to move on.
Coach Pete did turn down the UCLA job prior to the Bruins hiring Neuheisel. Here’s to hoping that LA has not somehow become more attractive, the allure of punching Lane Kiffen in the chops every year is not a big draw and that Nick Patti has some of the Kellen magic that kept Pete so enchanted.
Not sure how this turned into a discussion weighing the merits (or lack thereof) of LA, NYC and Peoria. What I love about Chicago is that people from the midwest are a lot like people from Boise: Personable and polite…more likely to make eye contact and conversation.

I have been all over the states and have a lot of family in the south… one thing I can say is that whole southern hospitality crap is bogus… I have not been to a place where people were as courteous as Boise… Similar sentiments from most out of towners I have talked to and I have talked to a lot.

Not so fast my friend...
Just my personal opinion, but next to Idaho, I believe the South holds true to their hospitable reputation (aside from when it comes to college football of course haha jab at the SEC). But with all seriousness, I’ve been to every state in the US except Maine and Alaska, and I’ve lived in every state on the East Coast from Virginia to Florida, along with North Dakota and Idaho, and even with all that I’d still have to say the South is the most hospitable after Boise/Idaho. It all just depends on what parts you go to and what type of person you are I guess. Idaho has lovely Moscow, where unless you’re a raging alcoholic who likes to throw the V you probably wont be treated the greatest, but everywhere has their downfalls haha.

Illinois wants Petersen, too
I’ve had the same exact argument with fifty people already in the last two days. They seem to think that Champaign-Urbana is God’s gift to the world sand that no one in their right minds would NOT want to come here to coach the “sleeping giant” that is apparently Illinois football. roll eyes
If Illinois football is a sleeping giant, they’d better find someone who can do an autopsy. I’m pretty sure that giant died in his sleep a few decades ago.
