Boise State takes down Oregon State, 37-24

The Broncos got the Beavers' best shot on Saturday night, but BSU's stars came to play with big nights on offense and defense. Kellen Moore threw three touchdown passes, Doug Martin had 100 yards, Titus Young and Austin Pettis each grabbed TDs, and the Boise State defense bottled up the Rodgers brothers.

Go Broncos!

1st quarter

  • Austin Pettis TD catch to Austin Pettis
  • James Rodgers punt return TD

Oregon State drive

Great start for the Boise State defense. Three passes by Katz but some great pressure and coverage - Jamar Taylor a sack on a corner blitz and Shea McClellin with a sack on inside pressure from Billy Winn. Katz will have to make decisions faster if he's going to have success tonight.

Boise State drive

Good pick up on 1st down with a Kellen Moore audible. Interesting to see Boise State come out passing since Oregon State's run defense was maligned coming in. Doug Martin wide open on 3rd down out of the backfield. OSU will have to be more disciplined than that or else it's going to be a long game. A Myers false start pushed BSU back five yards when they had 1st and goal inside the 5. Two straight runs and then a crazy call for the first score of the game - Pettis TD pass to Gallarda on a fake option end around.

Oregon State drive

The Beavers start off with running plays on this second drive and have some success. On OSU's biggest run, looked like they caught the Broncos in a slant the wrong direction. So it's not like Boise State's DTs are getting moved around. Oregon State crosses midfield but the drive stalls after a no gain on 1st, a poor throw on 2nd, and McClellin pressure on 3rd.

Great over-the-shoulder catch by OSU's punt coverage team. Amazing.

Boise State drive

Can't have much worse field position than your own 1 yard line. The run hasn't been working much yet. On Doug Martin's 2nd down run, OSU brought a big time run blitz. Not sure if they're doing it on other plays too. Boise State did an interesting combo of play calls at the end of their drive - a bubble screen to Pettis that didn't hit and then a fake bubble screen and wheel route that didn't hit. Good play calls, but a punt.

Pretty great return by Oregon State. Brotzman can't place that punt much better. The coverage was just lacking.

Second Quarter

  • Kyle Brotzman FG
  • Kellen Moore TD pass to Austin Pettis
  • Kellen Moore TD pass to Titus Young

Boise State drive

Harper went down in a heap early in the drive. Looked a lot worse than it will probably end up being. Great pass to Titus Young on 3rd and 10 to pick up the 1st. Beautiful throw. A couple runs by Doug Martin who has not found much room tonight put the Broncos with a 3rd down in the red zone. Great 3rd down pick up with Moore to Efaw. Very important play there. Or not. Boise State goes no gain, incomplete, and loss of one and has to settle for a field goal. Is "interesting" the right word for that 3rd down call? An option play with Joe Southwick from the 2? Eh. I would have liked a fade pattern on that one.

Oregon State drive

Looked like another Boise State defensive stop until Ryan Katz made a good throw for the first time tonight, dropping one in between the zone coverage in front of Iloka. But Boise State holds after the conversion, stopping Jacquizz Rodgers on 1st down for no gain, watching a 2nd down bomb sail over the heads of everyone, and sniffing out a screen on 3rd down. Boise State started the drive with its backup D-line and finished it with its starting D-line. Not sure if this is notable or not: Against Wyoming, Bois estate's No. 2 D-line took a little longer to get into the flow of the game, so maybe we're seeing this again against OSU.

Bois State drive

That was fast. Kellen Moore makes a slick escape on a CB blitz and passes for 20 yards to Pettis. Next play is a beautiful one-handed, over the shoulder catch by Young. And then one more play to Pettis and Boise State is in the end zone. Clinical.

Oregon State drive

The Beavers are definitely winning special teams. A big return and one big offensive play (looked like Percy and Acrey might have bit too hard on the play action), and OSU is in field goal range. BSU's No. 2 D Line did a great job stopping Quizz on 1st and 2nd, and then Bacon with the tipped ball on 3rd.

Boise State drive

A Kaiserman sighting? He sees the field before Jeremy Avery. Boise State establishing the run more on this drive, and it finally looks like it might work for something. That sets up a lot of time on play action for Moore, and he completes to a wide open Titus Young for the touchdown. Really interesting play since the OSU corner pushed Young out of bounds on his pattern and then gave up on him. That's not how that rule works, so Young was wide open for the TD.

Oregon State drive

Good call on the TE screen by Oregon State. That was much sneakier than the Rodgers screen that you could see coming a mile away. OSU has been looking Halahuni's way a ton tonight and not really looking James Rodgers's at all. For the Beavers, great timing to actually move the ball on offense right before the half. For Boise State, really too bad that they are letting OSU move right before half. Acrey whiffed badly on a Ryan Katz tackle to give up a 1st.Oregon State with a 1st down in the red zone and they go incomplete, short pass to Quizz Rodgers, and incomplete on 3rd down.

Third quarter

  • Jacquizz Rodgers TD run
  • Kellen Moore TD pass to Tyler Shoemaker
  • Ryan Katz pass and fumble recovered TD

Boise State drive

Good pick up on 3rd down right away with a pass to Pettis on a rollout. Not as good of a pass on the next 3rd down where Moore missed a wide open Shoemaker. Oregon State did better defending the run and Martin screens on that drive. But if Moore makes the 3rd down pass, Boise State is back in business.

Oregon State drive

Ryan Katz looks decent so far on this drive - a strong deep throw and an accurate pass on the comeback route. Boise State had the Beavers stopped on 3rd down, but Jamar Taylor didn't wrap up and Katz slipped past for a couple extra yards. James Rodgers got rocked by Winston Venable on the play. Looked pretty serious ... at least a concussion. Boise State had OSU stopped after a 3rd down sack, but Crawford gives the Beavers a 1st down with a stupid taunting penalty (one that they have not called all night despite plenty of opportunity to make that call). Next 3rd down, the refs flag Winston Venable for unnecessary roughness for .... ??? I have no idea. That's rough. And it leads to 7 points for Oregon State. That's really poor.

Boise State drive

Great run by Doug Martin to start the drive. Just what Boise State needed. The Broncos get some help with a pass interference penalty on 3rd down to extend the drive and then Moore finds Shoemaker for the touchdown. Very big drive by the Broncos.

Oregon State drive

Boise State forces a three and out and then Titus Young gives it back to the Beavers on a fumbled punt. Oregon State capitalizes with a touchdown on the flukiest play you will ever see.

Fourth quarter

  • Brotzman FG
  • Brotzman FG

Boise State drive

Moore to Shoemaker with a great 3rd down pickup on a short slant. Great catch by Shoemaker. The refs try to even things up with borderline personal foul calls by dinging OSU with one. Boise State can't take advantage by not picking up any more 1st downs after that. Brotzman comes on to add the FG.

Oregon State drive

OSU is moving the ball well on this drive with some good, safe passes by Katz. And then it goes downhill from there. Two incompletions and a draw play that did not fool Boise State one bit. Good bend-but-don't break defense by the Broncos.

Boise State drive

Another Doug Martin start to this drive; he's running really hard tonight and gets some good yardage when there are holes for him to hit. Wonderful 25-yard pickup by Martin on 3rd and 2. Who has been the better back tonight: Jacquizz Rodgers or Doug Martin? The Boise State drive stalls on a 3rd down run by Jeremy Avery. Haven't seen much of Harper late in this one. Brotzman finishes the drive with a field goal from the left hash. That was a great drive by Boise State to take time off the clock. A 13-point lead with two minutes left should be safe the way that Oregon State's offense has been moving. The Beavers aren't scoring fast enough to make up two touchdowns. Although the way special teams have gone tonight, I don't want this to come down to an onside kick.

Oregon State drive

OSU starts off allowing a sack and then takes their time getting to the line. Not the best two-minute drill you will ever see. Boise State stops the Beavers on the next three passes for the turnover on downs.
