From BSU prez Bob Kustra: "...why would I want to encourage a game where people don’t know how to act like grownups?"

Thata boy Kustra!

Although, it would be nice to get on top of the streak win column!

Well said!

“I’ve seen rivalries all over America, Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Texas-Texas A&M, Kansas-Kansas State, but you can go inside those rivalries and you’ll find all kinds of slams and digs and whatever, but I’ve never seen the nastiness aimed at the quality of our academic program that I find here in Idaho from the University of Idaho Vandals and as long as that goes on, why would I want to encourage a game where people don’t know how to act like grownups?’’

This is something I have noted for over 2 decades.

The “rivalry” long ago ceased to be a source of good-natured joshing. Kustra could have added Cal/Stanford and several others that are fun and not “nasty”. I saw it morphing in the late ‘70s and in the 80’s it became a monster.

Holy Smokes!

I thought this was just light hearted reading about media day. After reading this article, it sounds pretty serious.

""It’s a culture that is nasty, inebriated and civilly doesn’t give our fans the respect that any fan should expect when visiting an away team. … I don’t think at Boise State you’re going to find that, so for me personally, when I read what Pete said I knew, I knew."

by Rand McNalley on Jul 27, 2025 1:26 PM PDT reply actions

I gotta say, I was a little shocked to see "above the fray" Coach Pete make a statement like he did yesterday...

…even if it was “open to interpretation”.

The fact that Kustra called a spade a spade concerning this whole affair is beyond awesome.

by Drew Roberts on Jul 27, 2025 1:40 PM PDT reply actions

I love Bob Kustra

It’s great to see him open about Idaho. Same for Coach Pete. I can’t believe he said he didn’t want to go to Moscow to the media. Good things.

Oh what a final game

With this added to the lore of the rivalry the final game in the airplane hanger should be awesome.

Clearly Kustra and Peterson believe BSU has outgrown the simpletons from the north.

Wow. Shocked.

But… in a almost frightening good way.

I was considering going up to Moscow this year, but now.. I’d be almost afraid for my life. Then again, I’ve never been there and want to experience it… even if it’s a bad experience. Time to look for babysitters and look into life insurance.

Leaving the hubs AND kidlets behind.

Scott’s taking all of the time off of school that he can afford for our DC trip. It would be just me and the 15 year old. Is it bad for him too? Maybe we’ll watch it on the TV. I am a tad bit concerned that they’re going to want to send us off in a good way after this exchange of words.

You'll be OK, Crissie.

I have been to 4 games up there and my car was only vandalized once. The drunk frat kids only pick fights with other guys and the occasional unattended 8 year old. But, if you can put up with 4 hours of fowl language, it is worth it to witness Moscow student life on the other side of the win column. I guarantee it will be an experience you will never forget.

But Kustra did add fuel to a dumpster fire, so who knows…

Obviously you're not a golfer...

This year Vandals will go out of their way to be hooligans-bet on it.

The spectre of never havinf Boise State up there again, or possibly even playing, plus these comments which will be replayed on the Argonaut, every frat/sorority, and in myriad ways transmitted. I predict Vandals will set new low in behavior.

Dr. Kustra, thanks !

Fan back and forth is one thing. A president letting another teams fan base have it is something else. Thanks for having the stones.

Duane Nellis Reply

"I was disappointed to learn of President Kustra’s reported remarks during his meeting with the Idaho Statesman editorial board. I’m sorry to hear that Bob feels so negatively about his visits to Moscow. Both the University of Idaho and the city of Moscow take great pride in the friendly, welcoming and warm environment that a quintessential college town like ours can uniquely provide.

"Bob is right that athletic rivalries bring out passion in people for their alma maters; I’ve seen this first-hand between national rivals like West Virginia and Pitt, or Kansas and Kansas State. And I’ve experienced this here in our own state – both positive and negative. People with passion for their institution can say and do things that they regret. It’s unfortunate that this happens and all of our institutions should work to ensure that we don’t accept this unacceptable rhetoric. Late last week, I reached out to Bob to let him know that I was personally disappointed in the student opinion piece published by our student-run newspaper. I shared that disappointment with the Argonaut editorial board as well.

"In-state rivalries are meant to be fun. Our long-time rivalry with BSU is important to the state, the economy, and the fans from both teams. We embrace and celebrate that rivalry and I very much hope it continues. It goes without saying that we value our relationship with Boise State both on the field and court and in the many ways in which our two institutions work together to serve our state and its citizens."

Ok, Duane...

Kustra couldn’t have been more right on about the “culture” though.

Every school has some bad eggs in the fanbase…but the Kibbie Dome is starting to resemble the Thunder Dome.

this is hilarious how out of proportion this has gotten.

i’m concerned that this is going to get worse before it gets better. edsbs did have a point in that all kustra should have done was laugh heartily at the question and moved on to how cool bsu is and how cool going to the mwc is going to be.

Be very proud

So because we hate our rival and talk about it must make us horrible people. Good comparison…fans who hate their rival (Boise State), and fans who damage property of the other fans (Idaho). Also, talk to a Boise police officer about what happens when the Vandals play here in Boise, or just look up the arrest report the day after.

I'd never travel there

But if it sells tix and tshirts, spurs donations to the schools (or at least the booster clubs) and promotes other people to travel and spend money all in-state, then I’m for it. Plus, it’s practically a guaranteed W.

Although I do like it that Kustra and Coach Pete are getting Vandal County all riled up.

He was talking about their fans.

I think that is an important thing to point out. That is how I understood it anyways.
