Uni-versal Petition for Uni-fied Superstition

Now, I wouldn't go and call myself superstitious by any fanatical means...but there has been a voice running through the halls of my mind chanting irritating tunes, jumping on the hardwood floors and driving me absolutely BONKERS! What calls of relentless fortitude haunt my every thought?

<FLASHBACK> November 12, 2011... a day that haunts many a tailgater, brings tears to children's eyes and destroyed hopes of a BCS embellished finale to the YOKM (Years of Kellen Moore). Fans entered the stadium enjoying the season's showing of Uni-que designs of stylish uniforms expecting to see another awesome day of Horned Frog smashing goodness. Then...they came. Those horrible, gaudy, miserable Unis of Longhorn descent. Yes, we had practically NO BLUE on our men as they prepared for battle! WHAT WERE WE THINKING!? The Football Gods shook their heads in shame. Rightfully so. They knew that those colors were meant for miserable, miserable Texans. NOT proud Broncos. As those final minutes passed in the 4th quarter, our hope of a Vegas-free Winter diminished like a wisp of air. I prepared a gasoline bin in the parking lot after hours with anticipation, awaiting Coach Pete to console me in my sorrows and permit me to burn every last Uni from that day. Alas, he did not come...I drove home crestfallen and forlorn

<FLASHFORWARD> November 3rd, 2012...we remember this day all too well. Shan't we forget? Those wretched orange Unis reared their ugly faces yet again to taunt the Olympus. Defenses were tight, but the final countdown again sunk each Bronco's heart. Try as we might, our men lost yet again.

<FLASHFORWARD> Present...it is time Bronco Nation...now. Time we rise and stand tall! We must honor our Blue heritage and hold to that which is true! Let us raise our hammers and rid ourselves of this orange curse! Let us ride to victory and destroy the BCS walls that shelter the feeble-minded reporters and nay-sayers. For Blue we began, and Blue we should ever remain!

Broncos land regional lineman Hawkins Mann. 6'4 220. Played a lot of defensive end and offensive tackle. Home grown right out of Borah High School, originally he was committed to Montana, but after a strong showing at the Boise State camp and an offer, Mann committed to the Blue. Welcome aboard! Looks like to be a great pickup! This now brings our recruiting class to seven awesome commits...

Brainy Broncos

I know I submitted an OBNUG FanShot just a week ago about Boise State University's Football APR (Academic Progress Rate), but it's already moved off the front page and (almost) into the archives. Since the announcement was made that Boise State ranks in the top 10 percent in NCAA FBS, however, the actual results for all schools have been made public as of June 11.

Boise State University is ranked second in the nation with an APR of 993, outscored only by Northwestern University at 996. ESPN's Brett McMurphy broke out all schools and tweeted them, according to a posting by Jason Kirk on SB Nation.

(Click for SB Nation post)

First, the good news:

Brett McMurphy ✔ @McMurphyESPN

Top FBS APRs: Nwern 996, Boise 993, Duke 989, Clem & Wis 985, GT 983, BC, Mizzou & OhioSt 982, Rice 979, Bama, Rutgers, Stan 978, Miami 977

1:23 PM - 11 Jun 2013 21 Retweets 3 favorites

Our lovely state of Idaho presents A Tale of Two <strike>Cities</strike> Universities. It was the best of times (Boise State), it was the worst of times (University of Idaho). Yes, Idaho's pride and joy--our own Flagship U, the self-proclaimed Harvard of the West, a.k.a. the University of Idaho--posted an APR of 919, placing it third from the bottom in the nation. In naval terminology, our state of Idaho has the target bracketed. Now, the bad news:

Brett McMurphy ✔ @McMurphyESPN

Bottom FBS APRs: NM St 916, UTEP 917, Idaho 919, Troy 921, UL & Tenn 924, OkSt 926, IowaSt 928, Tulsa 929, FIU 930, BYU 931

1:20 PM - 11 Jun 2013 35 Retweets 2 favorites

Continuing the maritime analogy, our state's rudderless flagship hit a reef and is going down with all hands.

As Jason points out in his post,

These schools are all in perilous territory, as the NCAA explains. "In order to compete in the 2013-14 postseason, teams must achieve a 900 multi-year APR or a 930 average over the most recent two years. The same standard was in place for the 2012-13 academic year. This standard will increase to a multi-year 930, which predicts to a Graduation Success Rate of approximately 50 percent, or a 940 two-year average APR for the 2014-15 postseason."

"Oh, no," the Vandal Faithful exclaim, until AD Spears points out that the University of Idaho, despite its wonderful advances in the genetic engineering of farm animals, has not yet succeeded in grafting wings onto pigs; therefore, any hope of Vandal postseason activity will be confined to watching the Broncos defeat another foe in their bowl game. "Nothing to worry about," says Spears. "No postseason games for us, anyway, so no big deal."

Seriously, folks, what happened to the ballyhooed claim of academic superiority inherent in the "tribe from the north"? Since Idaho has wasted away on the gridiron wilderness in the last couple of decades (not that it was any great shakes before then), these tribespersons have been thumping their chests in proclamation that, well, at least their academics were pretty good. Then the reality of the NCAA APR settles in.

But, for our Broncs, the future has rainbows. Congratulations to Coach Pete, his staff, his students, and the entire program for achieving this lofty goal. Makes me proud to be an alum.

Indepence any opinions? I say they could...

Just sitting here and well have been thinking awhile back there was just talk or hooplah about boise going independent. Some say they wouldnt have been able to do it or what not but I think they could be open to a much more exciting schedule. If im not mistaken they could take after ( it pains me to say it ) Notre Dame. Didnt they sign a contract with the ACC to play a number of their teams a year. What if Boise did that with the Mt.W but lets say 6 games a year and to keep the rivalry their guaranteed to play Nevada, Fresno, and for the heck of it SDSU. Inking 6 games with the Mt.W leaves what, 6 games still open? How about work something out the the Pac12? Say 3 random teams per year? Which would leave 3 more open games? Now IF this were to happen what 3 teams year in and year out would you love to see Boise play? I'll share mine 1. TCU 2. Notre Dame 3. IU/PU/OSU or some neighboring Indiana team well simply because im a BSU fan in indiana. Let me hear your comments and sorry for any mess ups on here i just threw it together on the fly.

What is a Munson'd?

Alright everybody,

After much frustration I decided to do some research to understand what the heck everyone means when they say Munson'd. It shows up at least once very couple of threads and I was dying to know. Before actual research, this is is similar to what I thought of when I saw Munson'd:

Now On to my research! When I typed "Munson'd" into the web search, it came up with a fellow named Thurman Munson.

He was a catcher for the New York Yankees (an outstanding one I might add) He was the only Yankee to receive both the rookie of the year award and most valuable player, and with a mustache like that, can there be any limits to greatness? I submit that there can not!

...Unfortunately I was wrong and there are limits. This Munson died at the age of 32 while practicing landing his plane. So my search continued on for this Munson, which landed me relatively close to Thurman the mustache'd Munson. My next idea was to search Obnug. so I typed Munson into the search and decided to go back to the furthest possible Munson I could find. That landed me at a fellow obnugger named tmunson:

I was thinking tmunson, Thurman Munson, must be a connection! Well... no relation (at least I don't think) I decided to read through a few of tmunson's posts and found his (or her... we will stick with him for now) posts to be pretty Interesting (or whatever adjective you prefer.) So this term Munson'd must be connected with him I decided.

The next thing I found on Munson'd was a post in the Urban dictionary that defined Munson'd!!! it was submitted by Mikrino, which I believe is a Obnugger. the definition is;

-A phrase used on blogs to indicate excessive typos or grammatical errors in one's post. Orginated at OBNUG.com in reference to blog member, tmunson.

Here is the link in case you want to see it yourself, Urban dictionary link

This put me on the right track! The more I read, the more I saw the misspelled words! Alas! I had an understanding of Munson'd!!!

Before finishing this post, I found out the reason we haven't heard from tmunson here on OBNUG, I am sure most of you know, but if you don't, tmunson was diagnosed with cancer and passed away July of 2012. In his obituary it spoke of his love for the Bronco's and for OBNUG. While I didn't know tmunson or get to converse with him in the comment sections, I can respect any guy who's dedication to Boise State is put in his obituary.

Not only that, but it's prety cool that his name will contineu heare on OBUNG.

  -Munson'd!

-bsuyeti

If there are any other uses for the word Munson'd, please make them known in the comments.

Alright everybody,

After much frustration I decided to do some research to understand what the heck everyone means when they say Munson'd.
Massey predicts Broncos at 9-3 in 2013

It's been quietly boring, so I looked up the Massey Ratings for several teams. Their organization predicts the Broncos will lose three away games this year: Washington (21-24, with a 42% probability of a Bronco win), Utah State (20-26, 36% probability), and BYU (14-21, only a 30% probability of the Broncos prevailing!).

Click for Boise State ranking

We're supposed to eke out a one-point win over Fresno State, 28-27 (51% probability of a Boise State victory).

They rank us at #37 in pre-season. My gut tells me otherwise, but I don't mind this kind of stuff. STAY HUNGRY, Bronco Nation!

Interestingly, I believe they got the Vandals spot on, at 0-12. But then, even the Bleacher Report could predict that, so no big deal.

Click for Idaho ranking

See you in Jackpot. I'll be at the sports book.

2004 Humanitarian Bowl Ticket Stub

Hey guys,

I haven't posted in quite some time, so I thought I'd give it another shot.

I'm looking for a ticket stub (used or unused) from the 2004 Humanitarian Bowl between Georgia Tech and Tulsa. The game was played on January 3, 2004 to wrap up the 2003 season for each school. It's one of only two Georgia Tech bowl game ticket stubs that I am missing all-time. If anyone has this ticket and is willing to sell or donate it, please shoot me an e-mail at brad@georgiatechticketstubs.com

The game is a special game in Tech history, as P.J. Daniels ran for 307 en route to a 52-10 Georgia Tech victory, totaling the second highest single-game rushing total in Yellow Jacket history.

For those of you that are interested, my full bowl ticket collection can be seen here:

http://georgiatechticketstubs.com/bowl-games/

The site also contains tickets from regular season games dating back to 1921, totaling more than 650 unique games. I began collecting in December 2011 after going through my own personal Tech football ticket collection dating back to the early 90's.

Please let me know if you locate the ticket.

Thanks!
Brad

2013 Boise St. Roster Review: The Running Backs; Part 7

This video covers the last offensive position group, the running backs. I talk about Devan Demas, Jack Fields, Derrick Thomas, and Jay Ajayi. This season could be special, and if it is, these guys will have a lot to do with that. Already considered the strongest position group on the team by many, this group also boasts considerable depth. I look forward to seeing how each of these guys perform this season.

Who is who? (from the past)

Hello yall.

I need some help from those that have a decent memory of past players. My memory has gone south and autographs are tough to read. Anyway, Im dusting off my old BSU flag that has twelve signatures from past FB players... I wasnt the one who got all the signatures so Im having trouble remembering who is who according to their jersey numbers. I have seven to eight figured out. Of course They are the easier ones such as Kyle Wilson, Doug Martin, Marty Tadman, George Iloka, Austin Pettis, etc... I need help with the remaining four to five autographs. The jersey number i cant match names to are number seventy three, number thirteen, number forty, number two, and im pretty sure number four is Titus Young but he switched numbers several times.(just want to make sure my number four is his number four.) Keep in mind these are roster numbers between 2006 and 2011 so the options are open as to who is who according to what season they are from. please comment below. thanks Bronco Nation.

Photos for next Roster Review segment

Hey all, I'm trying to put together the next segment of my Boise State 2013 Roster Review series now, after a long hiatus due to a whole bunch of things. This next segment will close out the Offense, covering the Running Backs.

I just got finished making the photoshop pics for the video. It took forever and a day as I learned new techniques, followed tutorials, and went through the whole trial by error process. This stuff can be incredibly hard sometimes.I was genuinely surprised at how some of these turned out. Several looked nothing like the tutorial I was following as I gained my own vision and started implementing my own ideas.

For Jay Ajayi, that was a real work in progress. I started with one idea, and as I would try to implement it, I would have to think of other ideas because things weren't coming together the way I intended...but each idea was almost like it's own picture. In the end, I wound up with several full sized elements that I meshed together into a single compilation. They probably look better individually, but I simply put too much work into it to give up on the original mesh idea.

For those of you that might be interested...I made this in very high quality. The upload is just 1920 x 1080, but the quality I selected to save the file in should allow for them to be expanded if any of you are interested in printing one out for a poster. All the data should be there in the file to allow for that. As is my policy, don't even think about asking if there is a charge. You guys know I do this for fun and am just trying to get better. Everything is at the low low price of 'Absolutely Free' :D

Tutulupeatau Mataele

Every year we find an impact player or two that comes out of nowhere to help our team. Jerrell Gavins, Tyrone Crawford, Demarcus Lawrence, Sam Ukwuachu, and Doug Martin. These guys were all at one point in time lowly regarded prospects, but they have paid off big dividends for the program. (Mainly because many recruiting services greatly underestimate the skill and heart of our athletes) Another guy that will help us this upcoming year is Deuce Mataele. He has all the tools; a good first step, quickness, a natural bull-rush, the ability to anchor, good height, weight, and speed, the ability to disengage off of blocks: using a club, spin, swat, or swim move. You can even move even him to end since he has the ability to dip and bend off edge. His stats in Junior College are amazing, over 15 TFL and more than 10 sacks. The coaches have been impressed by him during the spring. I expect him to be a decisive force at the 3-technique in our 4-2-5 scheme, also moving to end in our 3-man fronts. The D-line alone should be good enough to win most of the games that we play this year.

Classifieds ??

Is there a classifieds section or a trading place? I'm selling my BSU Tailgating motor home and I'd like to find a true blue bronco fan to sell it to. I keep getting people wanting to live in it or tour the country and it really is better for a tailgate party place than a full timers home. So if you have an idea of a good place to sell it to a bronco fan or if you have any intrest let me know.

Thanks Sean

Nicknames

So first off let me say I love a good nickname. I love the emotions that come with it. I have been reading people throwing out some names for people and if you come up with something good, it can start to stick. I however would like to make a case for not giving a particular player a nickname. I say this, because I believe that his name can be enough to encompass everything a nickname could. Jay AJAYI. Can you imagine after every pounding run, the crowd all yells AJAYI!!!! The name itself can represent the power, the lateral speed, running over tacklers and breaking the plain of the goal. Could be just me, but everyone should know about AJAYI. The name says it all.

Could Seferian-Jenkins Miss Opener?

Washington Huskies TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, who is projected as a Top 15 draft pick in the 2014 draft, was arrested for DUI months ago...leading some to believe he might miss the opener against BSU, possibly more. That said, those who believe Steve Sarkisian to be a dirtbag think he would play ASJ anyways. However, ASJ had his court date pushed back again into June, leaving some to believe his case could continue into the 2013 season, meaning Sark would not even have the chance to reinstate the guy before the opener.

Here is an article by Bud Withers on the issue.....

This is a very important game for both teams. Washington is re-opening their renovated stadium, Sarkisian is coming into a season in which he needs to produce a win-loss record better than average. Could that be enough for Sark to say, "screw it" and play ASJ anyway? Or is that a cynical thought and ASJ sits out against BSU, possibly longer? What do you guys think?

Also, if ASJ sits......how much of an effect does that have on the opener? Surely losing a potential Top-15 selection and monstrosity of a TE like ASJ will hurt the Husky offense? Remove ASJ, and keying on Sankey becomes much easier.....

Comment away.....

Battle Royale: Drew vs. Jesse

Here's the deal: The wonderful folks over at Ignite Boise just released the videos from IB10. As you may or may not know, OBNUG's own Drew Roberts was one of the speakers. I was lucky enough to speak at IB9. Now it's time to crown a winner. Even though Drew is a little cocky, this is all for fun (<--- Unless I win, then... Booyah!)

Please, take 10 minutes, have a laugh, and vote below!
