At a Glance: Campus Insiders G5 Schools Ready for Power Conferences

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

OBNUG's June 22nd edition of Wake Up Bronco Nation featured an article by Campus Insiders which listed sixteen G5 schools that could compete immediately in P5 conferences. It should come as no surprise to the Bronco faithful that Boise State is listed as the #1 university ready to make that leap on the gridiron.

I decided that the article did not provide enough numbers for my taste, so I set out to see how all the teams mentioned in the article stacked up vs P5 opponents over the last decade. And below are my findings.

Please keep in mind that the four teams below were in the Big East, which was a P5 conference until 2012, when it split into the new Big East, a conference that does not host football, and the AAC.

Cincinnati: Big East from 2005-2012; AAC 2013-Present
Rutgers: Big East from 1991-2012, AAC 2013; Big 10 2014-Present
Louisville: Big East from 2005-2012; AAC 2013; ACC 2014-Present
USF: Big East from 2005-2012; AAC 2013- Present

There are some surprising numbers here. Firstly, Boise State, Cincinnati, and Houston are the only G5 schools in the Campus Insiders article to have a .500 and above record vs power conference foes in the last decade. Boise State has a 12-5 (.706) record against P5 opponents, but in all fairness to Cincinnati, which is 42-29 (.592) vs the P5, has played 71 games vs P5 teams in the last decade against 17 for Boise State. It is logical that our record would decline with an increase in weekly competition as well. BYU has an 18-20 (.474) mark against P5 opponents, and since going independent in 2011, they are 10-14 (.417), so their performance has declined vs power opponents since leaving the MWC.

The rest of G5 schools, other than Navy, have a .400 win percentage or lower vs P5 competition which in reality does not bode well for those teams if by some miracle they found themselves in a power conference tomorrow.

One of the more satisfying revelations is that SDSU, who had their first 11 win season since 1969, is 1-15 (.063) against power conference opponents since 2006. But it gets better, since 2000, the Aztecs are 1-31 (.031) vs power conference opponents, delicious indeed.

As always, GO BRONCOS!
