Kickoffs: should we run it out of the endzone?

Since the loss fumble in the Fresno game there has been some discussion on the benefits of running the ball out of our own endzone. I have been searching for some good stats on the subject and have not been able to find any. So I compiled my own for the 2014 season. Out of the 35 kickoffs that I found this season (cfbstats.com has us as having 37, so their might be two missing kickoffs somewhere), there was 5 touchbacks, 13 kickoffs not making it to the endzone (thus forcing a return), and 17 kickoffs that were run out of the endzone.

Out of the 17 kickoffs that we returned from our own endzone: 9 didn't make it to the 25 yard line with the average field position of the 16 yard line and the worst field position being the 10 yard line; 8 made it to the 25 yard line or further with the average starting field position being the 30 yard line and the best field position being the 47 yard line. The overall average return of these 17 kickoffs was 22.9 yards with two fumbles, one of which was lost (5.9% turnover rate). I couldn't easily find how many fumbles Jay has had, but Grant has a 4.3% interception rate by comparison.

Bellow is the game by game breakdown and in the comment section I will post the raw data I used:

Note that all yards are post penalty yards. So a 35 yard return that had a holding penalty bringing the ball back to the 10 yard line is a 10 yard return.

Ole miss:

3 kickoffs less than 65 yards with the average return of 21.6 yards.

2 kickoffs into the endzone with the average return of 21.5 yards (16 and 28).

Colorado

1 kickoffs less than 65 yards with the average return of 9 yards.

3 kickoffs into the endzone with the average return of 20 yards (25, 10 and 25).

Connecticut

5 kickoffs less than 65 yards with the average return of 16.6 yards.

0 kickoffs into the endzone with the average return of N/A yards.

LA-Lafayette

0 kickoffs less than 65 yards with the average return of N/A yards.

2 kickoffs into the endzone with the average return of 37 yards (27 and 47).

1 Touchback.

Air Force:

1 kickoffs less than 65 yards with the average return of 16 yards.

2 kickoffs into the endzone with the average return of 24.5 yards (18 and 31*).

1 Touchback.

*1 return said it was for 16 yards, but we started on our 31 yard line, I am assuming we got a penalty in our favour and useing 31 as the return yards.

Nevada:

1 kickoffs less than 65 yards with the average return of 19 yards.

5 kickoffs into the endzone with the average return of 18 yards (16*, 18, 21, 11 and 21).

2 Touchback.

*fumble recovered by us.

Fresno:

2 kickoffs less than 65 yards with the average return of 7.8 yards (both ended at our 38 yard line).

3 kickoffs into the endzone with the average return of 25 yards (25, 33, and 17*).

1 Touchback.

*We had two fumbles, one on a short kick that re recovered and the 17 yard return that was recovered by Fresno at our 5.
