This is inspired by the post What Makes Boise State Football Unique and I wanted to share it.
I didn't live in Boise until 2008, although, my daughter and her husband lived here.
My son-in-law sent Boise stuff to me, shirts, sweatshirts, cups, etc. This started while I was still a resident of Ohio. Until the Boise gifts started arriving a perfect football weekend was a Buckeye win and a Notre Dame and Michigan loss. In fact, a Buckeye loss was canceled out by a Notre Dame and Michigan loss, as long as one of them lost it was as good as an Ohio State win.
My life suddenly got complicated; Boise State got thrown into the mix. Thank goodness they won often.
I wore my Bronco wear everywhere. Suddenly I was a chick-magnet. Here I am a guy in my 50's and girls in their 20's were trying to pick me up, all because of my Bronco wear.
This part of the story is true:
My first weekend in Boise I took my darling grandkids to the McDonalds at I-84 and Curtis. I got them a sugar fix and let them go to work in the play room.
A young dad approached me and ask me if I would watch his two sugar frenzied kids while he went to the bathroom - pretty trusting.
It took him a while and at first I thought it was just a new way of abandoning your kids. Finally he came back and apologized for taking so long.
We chatted long enough for an introduction and to explain I just moved in from out of state.
"California?" he said.
"Ohio," I said.
He smiled relieved.
"Perhaps you should have found that out before you asked me to watch your kids," I mused.
He smiled and the very next thing he said was, "Have you seen Boise State play? Did you see us in the Fiesta Bowl?"
The point is, I've never seen a community so proud of its team that in the first minute of an introduction one of its citizens and fans told me about how proud he was to live in Boise and be a Bronco's fan. I know for a fact you will not see that anyplace else.
