I had to sit down and organize my thoughts on this game, it's implicatiions, ramifications and overall meaning in the grand scheme of things?Naturally, one asks "who's to blame for this?" Answer: noone. The simple truth is that eventually a team you've consistently beaten for years is going to find a way to beat you. That's what happened in Fresno last night. The Bulldogs knew that to have a ANY chance of going to a BCS game, that they MUST beat BSU. The game was not lost because of lack of effort, courage and talent. It was lost because of fate. Sometimes it's just not in the cards? Fresno wanted it real bad! Did anyone else notice just how amped up the crowd was in Fresno? Did anyone else notice- besides the sell out crowd- how the Bulldogs were playing that game? They were playing like it was the National Title Game! ( Or is it just me that perceived it that way?) It's been said that " the courage of your opponent does you honor". The Dogs left nothing to chance last night. They played like champions. But so did the Broncos. Even in defeat. They took Fresno's best shot and almost pulled out the win anyway.
For the record: Yes, I am disappointed because I truly feel that BSU could of and should have won the game. The missed two point tries were incidental in the loss. The poor tackling was a factor in the loss though. I'm not down on Coach Pete or his staff. They did their best to counter Fresno and fell just a hair short. Concerning Ajayi. Anyone that places the blame for the loss on him clearly is just looking for a scapegoat. Yes, he messed up. But then again, so did the O line, linebackers, Swick throwing the ball straight to the defender etc.. Point being, you win or lose as a team. Period.
What now? What's left for the Broncos? Clearly all hopes of a BCS game are gone now. That's a given. At best, it's going to be as the AQ conference fans call the "crap bowls". The bigger concern is that there are teams left on the schedule that plan on exacting their pound of flesh from the Broncos as well. BYU and Utah State being the most notable. The point is that there is a whole lot of football to be played this season. If the team doesn't regroup it's going to go from a disappointing season to an embarassing season. Honestly, the Las Vegas Bowl might be a luxury right now? The Poinsettia Bowl- a lowly as it is- may be a luxury as well? ( I cringe at the thought of the Potato and New Mexico Bowls). The team has to focus! I have faith that Coach Pete will salvage the rest of the season and refocus the team. And I'm not going to abandon the team either.
To the Bronco players: Keep your head up! The trick to dealing with defeat is to get back up when you get knocked down. You don't have to stand tall, but you do have to stand up! Stand up, suck it up and play ball now. Have some fun now. Loosen up and go back to BSU football. Good things will happen for you. As far as Fresno State is concerned, we'll get another shot a you- COUNT ON IT DOGS!
