I know we all enjoy a getting in a good jab at Derek when we get the chance. As a Boise State fan living in Fresno I've personally had unique opportunities to
harass ask him about that Boise flag in his home, which is no longer up btw (wife put her foot down as I understand it). I came across this article last night and I have to say I was touched by it. It seems like Derek despite his typical young-and-dumb shenanigans he was up to early on at Fresno State has turned out to be a decent person. Derek became a father for the first time earlier this month and has quietly been dealing with some major family challenges as his newborn son has needed to fight for his life ever since. Having lost a newborn son myself I know how terrifying this can be and I empathize with what Derek and his wife Heather have had to deal with the last three weeks. The article sheds light on who Derek is off the field as well as what kind of coach Tim DeRuyter is, and I must say that I am impressed on both accounts. It is customary for Bronco Nation to root for our opponents when they are not playing us anyway but tonight as Fresno takes on Rutgers, maybe we can remember that there is much more to life than what happens between the end zones and that Derek just may have proved himself to be a man and young father worth rooting for. I personally will be cheering on Fresno tonight and wish Derek and his family all the best except come Sept 20th when I will forget I ever said this and hope D-Law puts him on his back all night.
