Sitting from my couch where I help the team by sitting in the winning formation, I noticed one thing in particular about our defense. Jeremy Ioane is ONLY a safety VALVE for our team. This is nothing against our defense if this is their plan as to not allow a big play, but this is the same guy we were all excited about for his big hit/ big play potential. Every play I watched, I looked for his involvement. He is generally 25 yards from the ball. Nevada had the ball first and goal at the 6 after a false start, he was 5 yards into the endzone. when the ball was snapped, and the running back was halfway to the end zone, he came up and BUMPED an o-lineman.
I have no problem with the talents of Jeremy Ioane, in fact I am blown away by his skill and speed. My only issue is I would like to see him making bigger plays. He is average 4 tackles per game, with zero interceptions. He should be joining Douglas as a leader on a young defense and stepping up in a big way. Our defense would be a lot more stout if he was just a half second faster to the ball. We know he has the skill, it is time to see him come to maturity and make the plays.
This may be blown out of proportion, and he will probably have a MONSTER second half of the season, but I just noticed his involvement and hope it changes. Christ Peterson's teams are always about effort and work ethic, I didn't see that from Ioane Saturday. It will be needed Friday from him at BYU.
