With the football season less than a week away and our last day in the Mountain West just a mere 308 days from now and the opening of the Big East’s television contract talks six days away I thought I might throw out some statistics for the upcoming negotiations and see if I could fuel some discussion.
I believe the Big East actually has a very good story to sell going forward which bodes well for the Broncos future.
Following is a breakout of the television household for each of the six BSC conferences with the MTN thrown in for fun. I did take a bit of liberty with the Boise TV Market (261,810) and included Twin Falls (65,800) and Idaho Falls (128,940) market because unlike the east and west coasts where markets butt one another and there are several major university football teams. Idaho has just one! I did not include the Spokane TV Market (426,690) which encompasses all of the TV households north of Riggins in Idaho including Lewiston, Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint.
The Boise Market number is not really as important in the negotiations as the national reach the Broncos have developed. All you have to do is look at the comments from the Big East’s new commissioner: "They have a national reach,'' Aresco said. "In college football, schools in smaller markets often have a national reach. Boise is one of those schools.'' The man should know based on his past associations with college sports and TV contracts.
I have linked the sources for these stats at the end of the post.
Let the debate begin.
