The last Boise State player to wear the coveted No. 1 jersey was wide receiver Titus Young who carried on the tradition of past Bronco greats like Kyle Wilson and Chris Carr. No one wore the single digit last year, despite my grassroots campaign for Joe Kellogg to do so. Will the jersey come out of retirement in 2012?
The Broncos normally reserve the jersey number for a player who deserves it with his leadership or playmaking or long-form essay. As such, here is a partial list of No. 1 jersey number candidates:
- RB D.J. Harper
- WR Matt Miller
- FB Dan Paul (Yes, yes, a million times yes!)
- CB Jerrell Gavins
- CB Jamar Taylor
- S Lee Hightower
- No one
Who do you think will wear No. 1?
If I were to make odds for such a thing (note: gambling is wrong unless you know you're going to win), I would give "no one" the best odds since no one from last year's star-studded team wore the jersey and this year's team is quite less star-studded. Lee Hightower would be next since he's young and scary good at football. The rest are even, except probably Dan Paul who would look 10 feet wide wearing a single digit.
Other available numbers
Here is a list of the numbers that have yet to be claimed, judging by the current Boise State numerical roster. Dave Southorn noted earlier this spring that some newbies have already received jersey numbers.
- 8 - QB Nick Patti
- 12 - retired
- 36 - LB Tyler Gray
- 80 - TE Hayden Plinke
- 92 - DE Demarcus Lawrence
- 96 - DL Elliot Hoyte
