What about our local boys?
I have noticed that over the past couple of years BSU has slowly declined in the amount of local kids that get to walk on to the football team. Is this because of our gradual ability to get 'better' players from other places? Is the talent here really not that great? Just wondering what you guys thought. I love seeing local kids out there playing and representing the area the way we know the players do.

Considering their options
They bring in a ton of local kids IMO.
Pete and the coaches have (for the most part) gotten the top high school kids from Idaho.
There is not a ton of kids in Idaho with top level BCS talent. IMO.

was mangum the consensus top recruit from Idaho? i know they invited that one kid (qb i believe) from coeur d’alene to walk on, but he decided to take a scholly at Idaho. I don’t blame him. there is also something to be said about competition and playing time.
My QB has an AWARD named after him. How about yours?!

Coeur d'Alene finished 16th in the USA HS Football rankings this year
They flat out destroyed one of the top teams in Cali, and one of the top teams in Washington. They were up on the Cali team something like 42-0 in the FIRST HALF. And isn’t that with 12 minute quarters? I forget.
They finished undefeated, but they had a much tougher time beating the Idaho teams on their schedule than they did taking on top out of state competition.
Interesting comments. Thanks for pointing this out.

Coeur d' Alene was a power house this year.
However they were a one man band in Idaho. Eagle was the 2nd rank team and they were out around 250 nationally, and then it drops off to over 600. The Vikings were in the top 25 in the west region, and surely could of competed with anybody. California had over a dozen teams in the top 25 west region. the team Coeur d’ Alene spanked- Whitney, was ranked 140 in Cal, and plays in the Div ll.
The numbers I ran are an estimate, and these are the percentages I came up with; In our current roster, which includes active, red shirts, grey shirts, and walkons that are recorded:
California………40%
Idaho……………..20%
Texas………………18%
All other states..26%
Foriegn……………6%
Considering California is almost next door, and has a monster population of 37 million, Idaho about 1.5 mil, Boise St now a national power, is well represented by local athletes.
IMHO, its the blue ! lol

Also...
California has 7 FBS schools for those 37 million people…
Idaho has 2 FBS schools for 1.5 million people.
The only other state who has fewer people per FBS school…Wyoming with 1 @ 550 000 people.
You're sellin CDA and Idaho short
They finished 16th in the USA Today rankings – that’s national rankings, not regional. Whitney finished 10-3 and lost to CDA 55-6. Whitney was a great team. They spanked Rocklin, Consumes Oakes, Del Oro (those schools should sound familiar) and won two games in the playoffs before losing. How far would CDA have gone in that playoff I wonder?
CDA beat Skyline of Washington to the tune of 52-14, and Skyline finished 11-3 after losing in what I believe was the state championship game. They had a much tougher time beating the Idaho schools. Eagle didn’t play any out of state teams, which is going to make it tough to get ranked if you’re coming out of Idaho.
Idaho high schools have a pretty good record against out of state competition going back many years.
Not selling them short,
you said
“one of the top teams in California”and I disagree with that. They were competitive this year, heck yea, but Cali rankings are pretty tight, and 140 is really good, but not top like, CDA & Eagle are in Idaho. And, from what I saw Del Oro spanked Whitney 38-0. Skyview however, is one of the top teams in Wash.
My point is not that Idaho doesn’t have quality recruits, its that California has a lot more to pick from. Shoot, I would have loved to have seen CDA play De LaSalle, win lose or overtime. That’s a lot of talent there. I probably would have gone to that one. I bet CDA would have given them a run for there money, especially if it was early on.

There are probably more kids playing football in LA county than the whole state of Idaho.
It only stands to reason that there are more recruits that come from down there. But per capita are they any better than the Idaho kids?
Good post, I finally got to use the stats I did last week.

Scholarships are going to go to the best players.
If the kids from Idaho are as good as the kids from other states Im sure they’ll give it to the Idaho kid but if they need to get an out of state kid the scholly will go to him because it’s cheaper for a kid from Idaho to go and pay instate tuition rather than an out of state player. There have been a lot of good athletes quit sports and school because scholarships weren’t available and they couldn’t afford to go to school.
I remember about 5 or 6 years ago when the U of I went to Montana and got wasted and after the game Idaho’s AD made this comment on the radio “It’s terrible when you go to Montana and get beat by a bunch of kids from Idaho”
hahaha, that's a funny story..
What a sniveling fool. lol

Don't care
It’s been a while since I’ve commented, but I had to give my two cents worth on this.
Frankly, there is too much press regarding giving Idaho players scholarships. I agree with many of those that have already posted. If they are quality players, they get scholarships, but if there are better players elsewhere, then we have to get the most talented players. There are still many players that get the chance as walk-ons and there are still many players that do get scholarships from Idaho. But to focus on the amount of players is completely ridiculous. If you want a Top 10 program, then you can’t focus on their residence. You need to focus on their talent, skills, and how they fit in with the program.
I could go on and on, but I think enough has been said.
Not by me.
Don’t several districts now have a “pay to play” requirement? It is only a matter of time before some talented kid can’t afford to pay…and we don’t get to see him/her play.Everyone’s loss. Education needs to be funded. I could go on and on, too. I’m not being political…I’m being prescient :)

For the sake of discussion
Is it possible that the SEC might be riding a bubble, such as our recent housing and Wall Street debacles? Sure, they appear to be on top now, but will that last? History says no. Everything cycles. Everything. Perhaps some day, and maybe someday soon, the bill will come due for the SEC fans, and then you might see the veracity of my statement.
Or not.
