QB's In Focus
Its a conundrum and too early to try and figure out a solution of whom will start the Fall of 2012.
*Southwick has been groomed as the heir apparent and team offensive leader, so its his to lose this spring or August.
*Jimmy Laughrea RFr., will have a chance if Nick Patti takes a Bronco Football 101 Red Shirt Year.
*Grant Hedrick RSo may share duties with Southwick in a two offensive package system which I think is possible for a Plan A.
*Nick Patti Does not Red Shirt because its his to win this spring and August.
This content was not created by OBNUG and therefore may not meet our standards. On the contrary, it probably exceeds them.

I think it's a very good sign that all four of these young men have a shot to start.
Normally there’s at least one guy pegged as a perennial backup, not so much this year. Doggonit, it’s even hard to definitively say the incoming freshman is going to redshirt. This tells me that we’re gonna be in pretty solid hands with whoever/whomever (I can never figure that out) starts.

Whomever
Here’s a great way to figure which one to use.

southwick
should start and patti should be smart and take the redshirt
This baffles me
Everyone seems to be completely disregarding Jimmy Laughrea, I remember being extremely excited about him and Grant Hedrick when they came in. Lots of comparisons to Kellen were thrown out there initially…

ditto.... how did he slip off the enthusiasm wagon?

Beats me
But I am eagerly anticipating the upcoming QB battle this offseason, as I know whoever comes out on top will be more then capable to handle the job.

So far I've held constant on my guess that Laughrea winning the starting job.
But this Spring will be the first time any of us have seen Southwick completely unleashed and I have a feeling he’s going to make the decision tough.

Still not sold
about Southwick’s ability to make smart decisions under pressure. In terms of raw talent he has it, but he seems to fold under pressure in numerous cases.

Though Southwick's time was limited, he failed to showed me any thing special. I see him as Tharp 2.0.
Laughrea is an unknown, and I can’t wait to see what he has to offer this offense.Decision making, and who’s best at it. There is your new starting QB. Not running ability, arm strength, or experience. IMO.

IMO
From what I’ve observed Southwick seems to take too long to make a throwing decision (no idea if its lack of experience or confidence) and he seems to want to run the ball at times he should be going through his check downs. I agree with Blue up above, i see him as a Tharp. looking foreword to the battle though and excited to see what Laughrea can do this spring.
I don't think its a
conundrum, although that’s a cool word and I’m not an English teacher.
Perhaps not a conundrum, but certainly a riddle

Wow! Patty is a beefcake!
I did noy realize he was as heavy as Southwick. If Patty wants to work hard enough for it, he can have the job.
QUARTRBACK SHOOTOUT
I REALLY LIKE THE PICTURE, THE SHOOTOUT AT THE QUARTERBACK CORRAL!!
I BELIEVE THE ONE LEFT STANDING WILL BE NICK PATTI! I AM IN CONTACT WITH A SPORTS REPORTER ON THE OLANDO SENTINEL, WHO HAS WATCHED HIM FOR HIS ENTIRE HS CAREER. HE TOLD ME HE ALSO WATCHED KELLEN, WHENEVER HE COULD, AND SAW HIM IN PERSON ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, WHEN HE WAS SENT TO COVER THE GAME.
HE TOLD ME THAT WHAT WE ARE GETTING IS KELLEN, WITH WHEELS, LAMBORGHINI WHEELS. IMAGINE, IF YOU CAN, WHAT KELLEN WOULD HAVE, OR COULD HAVE DONE WITH 4.4 SPEED. SCARY THOUGHT, HUH!!! HE WOULD HAVE WALKED AWAY WITH THE HEISMAN ALL FOUR YEARS!!! BEFORE HE EVEN GETS OUT OF TOWN, WE HAVE A GUY WITH A 35 — 4 RECORD COMING IN, INTENT ON BREAKING KELLEN’S RECORD, IF GIVEN A CHANCE!!! I BELIEVE, WITH THE RECRUITS THE BRONCOS HAVE SIGNED, ESPECIALLY ON DEFENSE, THAT THEY ARE READY TO RE-LOAD AND FIRE THE BLUE AND ORANGE CANNON! LOOK OUT!!!
BSC (BULL****COMMITTEE)!!!!! HERE COMES YOUR NEMESIS, AGAIN!!!! READY OR NOT!!!!
ALSO, WITH THE CHANGING OF COACHES, AND ALL THE EXPERIENCE, I BELIEVE ROBERT PRINCE WILL HAVE A REALLY HOT OFFENSE, AND WITH THE SPEED WE HAVE AT THE RECEIVER POSITIONS, THE OFFENSE COULD LOOK LIKE SOMETHING OUT OF STAR WARS. LIGHT SPEED AHEAD, WARP FACTOR 9!! OH, OOPS, THAT WAS STAR TREK.!!! ANYWAY, YOU GET MY MEANING!! WITH AVERILL AT CENTER, AND PARADIS TO BAK HIM UP, OR THE OTHER WAY AROUND, AND THE RETURNING VETERANS IN THE OFFENSIVE LINE, THEY WILL GIVE WHOEVER IS QB GOOD PROTECTION. I JUST KNOW THAT PATTI IS THE TRUTH, WHEN IT COMES TO QB’S!!!!!
THE OTHER QUARTERBACKS
YOU ARE RIGHT ABOUT SOUTHWICK TAKING TO LONG! HE ALSO HAD MORE 3 AND OUTS THAN ANY OF THE QB’S. HEDRICK DOESN’T HAVE THE SPEED THAT PATTI HAS, OR THE ARM. LAUGHREA IS A QESTION MARK!
I STARTED PLAYING THE GAME IN 1950, I WAS 11 YRS OLD, WHEN COACH SMITH WAS GETTING THE J C PROGRAM INTO HIGH GEAR! THEY BURST ON THE SCENE SORT OF LIKE BSU IN THE FIESTA BOWL, WINNING THE JC NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1958. THEN THEY WENT FOUR YEAR.
WHAT I AM TRYING TO SAY IS THAT I HAVE BEEN AROUND, MORE THAN A WEEK OR SO, AND HAVE SEEN A LOT OF QB’S, FROM VAN BROCKLIN, UNITAS, AND Y. A. TITTLE UP THE QB’S OF TODAY. I COACHED FOR OVER 50 YRS, SO I KNOW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE GAME. THE ABOVE POST, AND THIS ONE ARE MY OPINION AND TAKE ON THE COMING SEASON! GET OUT YOUR BRONCO FLAGS, AND FLY THEM PROUDLY!
COACH GRIZ
The one thing you're not accounting for is that Patti doesn't know the offense yet
They chose to red shirt Kellen and started Taylor Tharp. Do you think that had anything to do with who the better player was? I don’t. I am extremely excited for Patti, but if Kellen had to red shirt, so may Patti. Even with Patti coming to Boise early, I’m still not sure he’ll have enough time. If he is the guy, I’ll be ecstatic, I’m just now willing to place him under center just yet.

Coach GRIZ
From one old dude to another—turn off the caps lock, please.
If you’re having trouble seeing what it is that you’re typing, look in the lower right corner of your screen. You’ll see (I hope) a little magnifying glass with a “plus” (+) sign in the middle, and a percentage next to it. Click on the little arrow adjacent, and select a larger zoom size for your screen. I’d recommend maybe a minimum of 150% for you.
We enjoy your comments, but it’s awfully hard to read through your posts. Thanks, friend.

I don't see Patti redshirting
Coach Pete didn’t bring Patti in early to just redshirt him. It’s tough giving up the final semester of your senior year in high school; I have no doubt that Patti will be given every opportunity to win the job.
Patti Is On Campus To Cram For Spring Ball
Patti is now into the play book, film room, and weight room working at light speed to get a lap back before spring ball. he emerge as contender. By Last Spring Game, Bronco Nation will know!
The only thing the BCS has to fear, is fear itself, and Blue is the color of fear.
This and That
Lost the caps, Senior Chief! I will try to remember!
I agree, Coach Pete didn’t bring Patti in to redshirt him. He went all the way to Orlando and did a home visit to get him, He, Pattie, is not going to ride the pine! BSUGuRU said the other day, the QB spot is Patti’s to lose!!
Southwidk, more three and outs then any QB I can remember in recent histoy. Hedrick, I don’t think he has what it takes, Laughrea is an unkown!
I go back to what I have said about Patti, HE was player of the year in an 8 A conference in Fla, which is, so I have been told, the equivelent of a J C! Three years of playing at that level would prepare some QB’s for the Pro’s. I have a reporter friend on the Orlando Sentinel, and he told me, that watching Patti play against NFL bound players and making them look silly was jut Friday Night Lights Fun in Fla!
Patti is the man, and having watched this program, almost from the beginning, 1950, it is set in stone! Patti is the Truth, when it comes to QB’s! Trust the OLD GRIZ on this one!!
BSU FOOTBALL
First, Senior Chief, are you a REAL Senior Chief? I spent 8 1/2 years in from 1959 t0 1967>
I have a couple of other comments I would like to make about this coming season.
While it is true we are losing 22 starters, you must remember Coach Pet’s philosophy about running up the score. IF KM had been allowed to play ALL of every game, what would his stats have looked like? I can see 160 TD’s, easy 20,000 YRDS, and his completion % probably about the same.
NOW, remember that the back-ups played a bunch of every game, so they are very well prepared in the offensive and defensive line, and some of the new guys are very capable of earning a starting spot, Averill, Santini, Fields, and a couple of the other defensive guys. This is purported to be THE BEST recruiting class EVER, better than the one that is graduating 22 starters. I have no doubts where WE will be at the end of the season, in the top 10, ready to get shafted, AGAIN, by the BSC!! I think Senior Chief, you have been around, close to as long as I have, and if you are a TRUE fan, which I think you are, these FAIR WEATHER fans kind of tick you off. I have a friend who went to the Cof I, back in the 60’s, and coached HS ball here for at least 25 years, so he knows the program almost as well as I do. HE repeats my words ver batim. I have another friend who was the drum major for the old marching band, back in the 70’s the three of us are hard core Bronco fans, and don’t get this crap from all the fair weather fans who have only been around since the 2007 Fiesta Bowl! They don’t know the history of the PROGRAM, starting with Coach Smith, and Coach Knapp. THEY don’t understand the calibre of kids that BSU attracts or the calibre of coaches, and the coaches’ ability to build a team, and make them a BOISE FAMILY!!! Evidently they don’t understand the meaning of FAMILY! Oh well, I have rambled long enough! Come November, they will be screaming for BSU just like they knew all the time that THE TEAM FAMILY will be just fine!
Whew!
Yes, I am a real senior chief petty officer. Actually, I was command senior when I retired. I do not purport to have your years, but, yes, I’ve been around a long time. Before I yell at the younger folk to get off my lawn, I try to remember the admonition given to Lear by his Fool: “Thou shouldst not have been old till thou hadst been wise.”
I consider myself to be a true fan, but I’m having a hard time dismissing what you call “fair weather fans.” I don’t care if the citizens of Bronco Nation joined up after Fiesta I, or after the 1-AA NC, or after Camellia I, or last week. Perhaps they don’t know the history of the program; perhaps they aren’t familiar with, as you put it, “Boise family.” But then, Griz, isn’t it incumbent upon us old-timers to educate them? How are they to learn otherwise? Don’t put them down simply because they’re new. How would it have been if the 1932 Broncos had viewed you in the same vein? We all have to start somewhere, and I’m delighted to have more Boise State followers on board. Do you want to go back to the days of obscurity, playing Snow, and Dixie, and Carbon? Neither do I.
Thanks for losing the caps, Griz. You’re so much easier to read now.

Amen
I’m relatively new as a fan also, started watching the year we went to the liberty bowl and lost that heartbreaker to Louisville, but I completely agree we need to welcome every fan we can into the fold. Bronco Nation truly is becoming that, a nationwide network of fans and I’m personally extremely excited to watch it grow!

BRONCOS
Thanks Senior Chief, I can see the print better.
I want to give you the respect you deserve as a SC. Very few people understand what that means, or how hard you had to work to get there. I salute you Sir!
I also appreciate your remarks on the “fair weather fans” I give everyone their viewpoint, but some of the ones I am talking about, are the ones that post things such as; I saw Rutgers go down the tubes when they changed coaches, and BSU is going to fall apart. Or, We have lost too many players to be good next year. I don’t think we will even be a 500 team. Things like that, that totally putting down the ability of Coach Pete, and the staff he had left. When Pease left, these people were bemoaning that fact. I posted that ,“Coach Pete already had someone penciled in when Pease told him. Then they gripped about Robert Prince changing places, and I posted that Coach Pete already had somebody. Tehy announced the hiring of the Montana OC, and I said now we have two Offensive Coordinators, and with their experience, and the speed we have at wide receiver, that our offense might look like something out of Star Trek, with people flying aound like little spaceships, at light speed. I love new fans, and I will try and bring them up to speed on the BRONCO PROGRAM, BUT, the ones that want to throw us under the train, before Coach Pete and his staff work with them in Spring Ball,,nothing is going to change their attitude!!!! THAT is the kind of Fair Weather Fan we don’t need. All they do is poison the brew!! I have a lot of fun with hich school kids, (I’m still teaching), and was ACTIVELY coaching until two years ago when I fell on some unlit stairs, where maintainence had removed the rails, and this was the only entrance we could use, because the state had condemned the others, and they had to be repaired before school started. I finished the season, and had back surgery a week later. three back surgeries, fusion, and all that goes with it later, and I still can’t get around without a cane!!
The high school kids I work with call me OLD SCHOOL, or COACH GRIZ, Coach P, or whatever! I answer to most anything. I wear the high school lettermans jacket I bought when I started coaching in this district, and all the players wish I could come back. BSU was looking stsome of them in football, but I haven’t heard anything about whether they were told they could walk on, or what! I have convinced them to be BSU fans, and we get together when we can to alk football. You should hear some of the questions they ask me, Knowing when I started playing. One of them said that was over a half century ago. Oops, sorry Coach! I just laughed and said,” You didn’t know I was that old did you"?
They like to ask me questions about The Old Days! All of this has given me the opportunity to educate them on the BRONCO PROGRAM, and where it has come from. Some of them are married and have kids in school, but they are TRUE Bronco fans. If they have a question about a player, or what I think about next year, I will give them my opinion. At least they give me the respect that I have watched the program so long, I can give them chapter and verse of the program. In this way, I believe, I am recruiting future Bronco fans, that will ride out the storm, if we have one, and not trash the season before Spring Ball even starts. I have rambled enough on this post! Hope it explains a bit more about my position.
COACH GRIZ
Thank you SC For A background check.
Its nice to know something about OBNUG contributors. I appreciate your comments and your service to our country.
I don’t mind the occasional jabs as it keeps me real and sharper. My own comments are not perfect. But mentally, I like to comment, like doing mental push-ups and learn about OBNUG readers who are a very diverse and distinctive group of Broncomanians (Chevy Chase, Funny Farm Movie Lexicon) who are wanting the best and being a part of the best.
I feel like I am taking a 200 level class each day spending a couple of hours learning about the OBNUG and its people. OBNUG 201, Culture and civilization.
Now back to Fandom, its a state of mind of which there is no known cure. Its like being in love when everybody else thinks you are crazy to go out with that person. OBNUGing is texting and passing notes that are witty, critical or snaky to your inner circle of Broncomanians. Orange goes well with Blue at any formal. Blue carpeting in the home, lawn, car is priceless. Senior Chief is a good OBNUG citizen and is the balance we all need.
Thanks for being part of an enjoyable experience.
The only thing the BCS has to fear, is fear itself, and Blue is the color of fear.
ORANGE AND BLUE
I have a fellow BroncoManiac, who was drum major of the old marching band in the 70’s. He has his whole house in BLUE AND ORNGE. I thought I was bad, with a pair of bronco shoes, and a lot of other stuff, (he wants my Bronco shoes) but he has Bronco carpet thoughout his house! Everything is Blue and Orange, window shades, bathroom towels, I think the sheets are even Blue and Orange. I know he has Bronco wallpaper, where he got it, couldn’t tell you, but that is more than BroncoMania, that is BroncoCrazy!!!
He and his wife just bought an 1890’s farmhouse they are restoring, and when they move in, the present house will be my friend’s office.
He deals in music and baseball cards. He has, on his computer, and backed up, the top 100 songs of music from the 1940’s up to now, which has to be in the thousands of songs. His baseball collection is 10’s of thousands of cards and memorabalia. Anyone interested contact me, on here, and we can figure out a way to meet, or something so you can get his info.
I don’t mind the jabs either. I left the Navy to join the San Diego Police Dept., in 1967, so you know I took some jabs. As far as fandomania, I’can take as good as I give! If you think I am wrong, call me on it, I will try to accomodate, such as the using of all caps. I Bleed Bronco Blue and Orange, win lose or draw!
I told a friend, after the TCU game, “I don’t like Paterson, I think he is a whiner, especially when he doesn’t get his way, such as the MSU game when he openly criticized the officials, and said they would never come back to TCU., that my friends is uncalled for, but the man can coach and recruit.”. He should have taken a lesson from Coach Pete, who has always been a gentleman, even when he took his well deserved shots at the BSC!!! and all of you should know by now why I use the letters in that order.
