Boise State quarterback competition: Joe Southwick is hypothetical starter, hypothetically speaking
The competition to become Boise State's new quarterback will be long and hard and full of speculation that is completely blown out of proportion by bloggers like me. Speaking of which, here's some now!
As Boise State's new offensive coordinator, Robert Prince would know a thing or two about who would start a hypothetical game against a hypothetical opponent in college football's hypothetical Week Absolute Zero. But is the Southwick theoretical start based more on merit or seniority?
It's impossible to tell since I do not have Robert Prince on speed dial nor would he care to answer my calls, texts, or Facebook pokes if I did. My best guess as to the predictive value of Prince's statement is that some reporter bothered him into giving some answer / any answer about the question that will be asked a billion times more between now and August 31 and Prince obliged to get everyone off his back. So, no real predictive value, I'd say.
(Half of Bronco Nation just breathed a sigh of relief, one quarter of Bronco Nation vehemently disagrees, and another quarter of Bronco Nation is pretty sure Southwick will have a hard time beating out Kellen Moore in the fall.)
Also making moves in the QB derby is new recruit Nick Patti who arrived on campus a semester early so that he could take part in winter conditioning and spring ball. No news on Grant Hedrick or Jimmy Laughrea. Shoot, Laughrea could be a tight end now for all I know.
Your turn
How does the hypothetical Joe Southwick start make you feel? Nervous? Excited? Wistful? Share your thoughts in the comments.

I would...
say Southwick is the starter right now absolutely. Question is, can the others take it away. I’m rooting for Nick. But just know, whoever takes the position, will have my true support thew out the year.
'Trust me, i can protect myself. I'm a Boise State Broncos Football fan.'
I'd bet money
It will be Southwick with a liberal sprinkling of Hedrick running the option. Patti will redshirt. I’m curious to see what Laughrea can do in garbage time though.
Southwick will hold them off...
He’s an OKG with skills. Put him behind four new offensive lineman and the WR’s and TE’s we have and he will be a star this year.
I've been seeing "OKG" a lot the last few days...
…Why am I not understanding this one? Try not to ridicule me.

Gotcha. Thanks.

More detailed explanation
Coach Pete has certain criteria when looking for a young man to be part of his program. He calls this criteria “our kind of guy.” There is a certain type of person that fits Petersen’s system—his assistant coaches all know it, and so do the players. “Our kind of guy” is a way to judge a recruit to see if he fits that system.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they, too, have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.
Sounds vaguely familiar
See? You can spend half your life on OBNUG and still miss crucial parts of the lingo!

Early example of comments leading to "OKG"
Petersen was promoted to head coach at Boise State on December 16, 2005, succeeding Hawkins, who left for Colorado. Sophomore tailback Ian Johnson said about the transition, “We trusted him and knew he was going to take care of us. We knew he was a great person. He was going to recruit people just like himself. We waited for him to get everybody here and he got in the perfect people.”

An OKG lineman can't keep his feet on the ground.
Is it the Smurf Turf that cause feet to float or is it OKG powers kicking in once again?

The only thing the BCS has to fear, is fear itself, and Blue is the color of fear.
Two OKG's just taking about the last touchdown.
Shoemaker and Miller having an OKG time in the end zone.

The only thing the BCS has to fear, is fear itself, and Blue is the color of fear.
This not one of our OKG's in the white uniform
Notice that his butt is floating not his feet. In the background is an OKG tackler.
His feet are floating. The non OKG player suffered Smurf Turf Bum for the remainder of the game and is no way related to turf toe.

I hope this OKG intro power point clears the air for those who missed the memo.
Remember feet float first indicates OKG status.

Kevan, your writing cracks me up!
Kellen Moore for the duhs, Laughrea as a new tight end, Prince on speed dial…
Your a sharp wit and a pleasure to read. Every sentence has a plot and subplot with innuendo and implications there for the reader to ponder/giggle. Thanks for doing what you do, and doing it so well.
Hey, when is that press pass landing on the OBNUG doorstep?

QB
No doubt Petersen will turn the offense over to the QB that demonstrates the greatest ability to protect the football and make good decisions.
Unless Southwick really improves in this area, he is vulnerable to getting beat out for the starting position.
Like Kellen before him, it’s less about skill and more about making good decisions with the football.
That said, it’s wide open.

Yes. It's about making good decisions.
Coach Pete would go out there and play himself if his best option at QB was a gunslinger.

Southwick has made 2-3 mistakes when playing mostly with backups in garbage time...
I think he is a much better decision maker than we give him credit for.
I don’t want to be too tough on him before he’s given his opportunity to run our offense with the starters, but it’s not the 50 good decisions that get you, its to 2-3 bag ones that bring you down.
Kellen beat out Hamden in fall ball not because he was more skilled or experienced but because Hamden had a tendency to occasionally try and make throws he should not have attempted.
Ist start on senior day was a pick 6.
Pete values who takes care of the football. Southwick can still win the starting job, but he needs to improve on making better decisions when to throw the ball vs. running, taking a sack, or throwing it away.
by Broncsfan4life on Feb 2, 2012 10:04 AM PST up reply actions
I don't believe Southwick is a lock.
When I hear Coach Pete saying “its going to be one heck of a competition.” and “i have no idea, I really don’t” about who’s going to start. Says to me there is no favorites. And he said that when asked about Patti, that alone tells you he’s looking forward to Nick giving the others a run for their money. Kellen got the job as a red-shirt. Got picked before kids that were “next in line”. So if Laughrea studied and did his homework, he has just as good as a chance as the rest.
'Trust me, i can protect myself. I'm a Boise State Broncos Football fan.'
What's not to like?
Joe has skills with both arm and feet, he has been schooled by Yoda for 2 years, his efficiency rating is excellent and he is mature and patient. I like it! Don’t know if that means he will get the job, but he has certainly earned it so far.
Earned it?
Am I the only one who isn’t impressed with Joe Southwick? I understand a lot of the time he was playing with other second string folks, and while the kid has raw natural talent his decision making in actual games and under pressure is horrible. I have watched him over the last couple of seasons, outside of Kellen he has had by far the most game play of the QBs. I saw more 3 and outs from this guy than anything else over the last two seasons. He did manage to find the end zone a few times and did move the ball a bit, but to me a QB needs to be able to consistently find the end zone. When a guy caps off his season by throwing an interception to the worst football team in the FBS it does not leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling about his ability to get out there and make smart choices. I think that he definitely has potential but the guy needs an intensive training course in how to make smart decisions under pressure (is Kellen available to teach him in the off season?).
That ability to make decisions under pressure
comes with actually getting a lot of time in the game for QB’s not named Kellen Moore.
Southwick does just fine. I think if the coaches were actually looking to score more TD’s in garbage time then he’d have more.
So far for his career he’s 40/54 (73.6%) for 400 yards, with 2 TD’s and 1 INT. He’s run the ball 16 times for 32 yards (not big yards…but he doesn’t lose them) and been sacked 4 times. 3 of them his freshman year, so only once last year.
When the offense is planned with him running it, when he knows he’s the one in control (and not just in ‘cause the game is 50-0) I think he’ll be a good QB and win a lot of games.
Southwick isn’t Kellen…but who is?

It had to be him.

What I find hilarious
is that so many people said BSU was only good because Kellen was our QB but now that Kellen is moving on people are trying to claim that he was a system QB. Which is it? As a Bronco fan first and foremost I would love it if Kellen was just a product of the system (though I know that’s only partially true). It would mean we’re going to pick up right where we left off.
Yeah...but Hamden wasn't even very good.
I know “stars and rankings aren’t important” but Hamden was completely unranked, while Scout had Kellen ranked higher than any of our current QB’s. They even gave Southwick a higher ranking than Patti.
Kellen was just da man! :P

Agreed, just saying that it's up in the air, and it wouldn't surprise me to see Laughrea or Patti make an immediate impact.

I wouldn't be surprised either,
I haven’t been in on all of the Patti hype unti now. I think that Southwick or Hedrick are very capable. But for some reason after watching the LOI show with Patti and Coach Smith I got really excited about what he’s going to do on the blue! I’d even be excited for Laughrea.
We’re in good hands no matter who gets the job IMO!

Here's a related article from Ft Worth. It has some actual TV & legal specifics.
If you ever wanted to see Boise St play...may be a good chance. Love em or Hate em, they are always interesting; and now, no matter where you live, "They're Coming To Your City"
It looks like 1 of two things are happening,
1. The Big 12 had a scheduling deadline with their TV partners on Feb 1, and that puts pressure on WV to commit in 2012, which could give the Big East some leverage in their exit fee. This in turn might help the Big East lighten the load on BSU exit fees.
2. The Big 12 had a scheduling deadline with their TV partners on Feb 1, and is causing everybody who writes about these things to jump to conclusions, and blow everything out of proportion, like I just did. Haha!

I have no problem with that ...
As long as the Big East is willing to pick up the additional penalty payoff to the Mtn West to leave early …

YIKES
That would be a scheduling nightmare at this late hour for both the BE and the MWC. Unless the Big East is gonna fork over the early exit fee cash I don’t see this happening at all.
But if they did fork over the cash...
I’m totally 100% cool with this happening this year.

The BE should waive the admission fee to BE if they really want the Broncos this year.
Five million to the MWC and then 10 Million to Big E for joining a year early, no way. BSU wants to add on to a stadium and not give to everybody’s way. Its 2013 baby or deals off. It would also cost in cancelling games and rescheduling new ones. TV contract cost. This would be a train wreck in the making just to satisfy somebody’s impulsive knee jerk decision making unless there is NO BSU money on the table needed. If Big East is really really serious, then waive the entrance fee and help with the scheduling cost. BSU
will pay the MWC its due. There should be no financial harm to BSU to change a year early just because the BIG E wants it!

Yes
At 6 foot 2 in. and a cannon for an arm, he definitely looks the part. He’ll be in the mix. I believe he was the scout offensive player of the year last year, so he’s got skills. Look for him to be in the thick of things come fall ball.

I'm surprised people aren't talking about him.
Laughrea was a huge get when we recruited him and it seems like everyone forgot that he exists. Why?
Cause...
we haven’t seen a thing on him yet. He is no Nick Patti when it comes to his highlights. Which is not to say that Nick Patti will become a better player. So don’t put words in my mouth. To tell you the truth. It’s going to benefit Laughrea the most. I believe it’s going to be him or Patti getting the job. But that’s just me. Like I said before. I will support whoever gets the job.

I'm high on Laughrea.
I think he’s the sleeper here. Words was he was impressive on the scout much in the same way Kellen was awhile back. And he’s had an entire season and off-season to learn.

southwick is just another taylor tharp
i’m thinking that southwick is just going to stand in as our quarterback until patti knows the play book like the back of his hand. i predict that southwick starts this year and i’m sure he will have a mediocre year (come on, he’s not that good) and next year we’ll see what patti can do. and i expect that patti will kick some ass on the smurf turf!
Southwick
All California, broke all records for TDs, yards passing, etc., MVP of BSU Scout team, 3 years
studying Kellen and learning system, clearly ready and able to lead. Grant and Jimmy
will contribute too, makes sense for Nick to redshirt.
