Who said we can't compete with the big boys?
One of my favorite things to do when looking at the stable of young talent that Chris Petersen has lured to the blue is to look at all of the other offers that those recruits can boast. I know that's not CP's style, but I am tired of the notion that Boise State can't compete with the big boys, even on the recruiting trail. I am relatively young for a Bronco fan, but I too remember showing up to games ten minutes before kickoff, buying tickets cheap on the spot, and sitting in the north end zone with my dad watching the Bronco's take on Cal State Northridge. It is amazing to think of the progress this program has made in that time span in every aspect, recruiting included. So, as my way of sticking to the haters, I thought I'd come up with a list of the so called "big boys" that offered scholarships to our guys, only for our guys to send them packing. Below is the list of each BCS school to make an offer to one of our recruits, followed by how many times they were turned down, and the players that had the pleasure to do so.
Oregon State: 3 (Santini, McCaskill, Yakoo)
Arizona: 4 (Yakoo, Collins, James, Averill)
UCLA: 2 (Averill, Yakoo *I included Yakoo despite the last minute pull fiasco)
Washington State: 2 (Averill, Collins)
Clemson: 1 (Lawrence)
Kansas State: 3 (Rhodes, Weaver, Lawrence)
Ole Miss: 1 (Lawrence)
South Carolina: 1 (Lawrence)
South Florida: 2 (Patti, Lawrence)
Tennessee: 1 (Lawrence)
Arizona State: 1 (James)
Colorado: 2 (James, Averill)
Utah: 3 (Demas, Weaver, Santini)
Iowa State: 2 (Averill, Demas)
Washington: 1 (Averill)
Cal: 1 (Weaver)
Louisville: 1 (Weaver)
Texas A&M: 2 (Fields, Weaver)
Texas Tech: 1 (Weaver)
Oregon: 2 (Fields, Demas)
Indiana: 2 (Patti, Demas)
Wake Forest: 1 (Demas)
By Conference: Pac 12: 21, ACC: 2, Big Ten: 2, Big East: 3, Big 12: 6, SEC (Including A&M): 5
Now, I'm not saying that we're competing with the Alabama's or Oklahoma's with these recruits, but there is a trend in the right direction, And if this list is possible despite all obstacles imaginable just 15 years after the days of Division 1-AA, it's hard to imagine how long this list will be in another 15 years.
This content was not created by OBNUG and therefore may not meet our standards. On the contrary, it probably exceeds them.

What I love
is that Coach Pete brings in guys he knows will represent the school and community in a great way. I’ve always been afraid that meeting my favorite player would lead to disappointment because the dude was a jerk. There have been very few players that I have heard of that have been that way and that’s because Coach Pete teaches them to be young men, not just football players.
I think what some people don’t realize is that even the schools that get the top recruits, still only get three or four. A majority of every major college program is made up of guys like the guys we got this year. On that level we are even with every other college team, but when we start getting a couple five star guys that when we will really take the next step.
I don't know what you are talking about....5 stars?
All of our guys are 5 stars right now, because they chose BSU, and they are training, working, practicing, studying, and maturing at the educational facility they chose. Too bad the rataings only go to 5, because if there were inifinite stars, our guys would have that rating.,..for Potential.

I agree completely
that when they leave they are just as good as any players anywhere. But imagine what Coach Pete’s staff could do with a d-end that comes in that is one of those physical freaks. Not only would he be a freak he would be well coached and destroy everybody. There are some great players that go through the program, but there are only two players in my short life that I can remember being absolutely better than everybody else (Clady and Moore). You are correct, 5 stars are based on potential. If our 3 stars end up being 5 stars, where would the 4 or 5 stars end up?

Sitting on bench
They chose Boise State so they could paly rather than being 3rd or 4th on the depth chart at most every BCS school that looked at them. Every major school makes 4 or 5 offers for players to be backups and special teams players and hope they can actually play.
What was the rank of the Boise State 2012 class from ESPN? Rivals? Scout?
50, 60, 70? Mostly all 3 stars or no-stars. But that’s all it takes to beat Wyoming or Long Beach. The Big East will be a different story, as weak as that conference is.
oops
pardon the spelling error. I meant “play” in the first sentence.

Caught about 50 crappie on Lake Guntersville the other day. I kept 6 and had a fry with the worlds best hush puppies and some really good cole slaw. Washed it down with Sweet Tea. Had a Bud for dessert. AlaCowboy

Now, why can’t he just bring some of that southern goodness up here, instead of acting like a troll? Shoot, I got hungry just reading it.
If you ever wanted to see Boise St play...may be a good chance. Love em or Hate em, they are always interesting; and now, no matter where you live, "They're Coming To Your City"
AlaCowboy, what an interesting fellar...
Well sir, if you ever find yourself near Huntsville, Ala., let me know and I will take you fishing on Lake Guntersville. Large-mouth, striped, or hybrid bass galore. The crappie are biting right now too.. I’m usually a catch and release fisherman, but these looked really good enough to eat, so I did.
This is a sincere offer. I may rag you guys a bit but I’m actually a good guy. Senor Chef is invited also, but he has to cook. :)
Drop by DawgRant sometime. Your team beat us fair and square and we respect that.
Yea, AlaCowboy
after reading some of the DawgRant comments down there, I kinda figure out its not personal. You guys, Tech & Gators fans are brutal to each other. All in fun though, right? We’ll just have to get used to more SEC fans. I have to admit, even though I didn’t think it was true, that “Shady dismissal” comment had me in tears. Now that’s funny. It just had an old school ring to it. I imagined that deep voiced NFL films dude sayin it.
Did you have help that day, or were they just jumping in the boat. I caught about 8 catfish & 13 bluegill one day, when I was a kid(dark ages). I could’nt worm the hook fast enough. They actually went after the bare hook at one point. Still don’t know what got into them, but a lot of them got into me. lol A fishing trip down south actually sounds fun. It would bring back memories.

DawgRant comments
We are rather brutal on each other, but that’s just family. But if an outsider comes in we rally together and attack. Dawgs hate the Gators with a passion, and Tennessee is a close second. Georgia Tech is our bitch. We’ve beat them 10 of the last 11 games and have a commanding lead overall.
As for the crappie, 3 of us boated well over 100 that day. That is typical when they’re biting. We once got into the redfish down at Steinhatchee, Fla., and boated over 200 between 4 of us in about 4 hours. all 2 to 4 lbs. Was a great day. 105 degrees in August but we didn’t notice the heat.
We’re having a warmer winter than normal. Going to be in the 50s every day here this week. I’m going to put the pontoon boat in the water andclean it up a bit and do some fishing. Come on down!
105 in the south? Sounds like one of those days,
where you fish and drink beer all day, and never have to take a leak.
We just had some close relatives move down to Georgia, and I"m already trying to figure a trip down to Palm Bay to see one of my good buddies, plus an hour south for another relative. Shoot, who knows, we’ll just have to keep in touch. Last time I was in Alabama? Well lets just say it was top 5, all time best trips ever, and I generally have fun when I travel. I’m pretty sure I was a semi celebrity at the pub our team was hosted at in Mobile, for a year anyway. lol

I can't wait....
to play you over rated bunch of spoiled brats. Our 2 stars have proven they can beat 5 star teams just last year. Can’t wait to do it again. But it will be hard. Knowing you protected by the BCS.

Don’t talk to me about ratings and stars, ‘cause that means nothin’ to us. Never has and never will.

I believe that Ala actually gave us a complement,
“The Big East will be a different story”
See there is a slight, miniscule, sliver, of a speck, in the filtered flicker of a glimmer of hope for him.

Like Chris Peterson said
Don’t care about stars. Doug Martin according to ESPN was originally a one star recruit, yet this season I watched him put an SEC recruit, that was originally a solid 4 star recruit, face into the ground while he ran into the endzone. The fact of the matter is though that even though it may seem like we are lagging way behind “the big boys” that each year the recruiting does improve a bit. Chris Petersen knows how to get more out of 2 or 3 star recruits than a number of the “big boys” coaches will ever be able to get out of the 4 to 5 star guys. My brother in law knows one of the guys who played for BSU in the ‘07 Fiesta Bowl, and he has been watching who the Broncos are getting in now. He has stated that he couldn’t compete with the guys that are being brought in now. So even though the difference isn’t earth shattering or loaded with 4 to 5 star talent, each recruiting class is an improvement.
That 2007 Fiesta Bowl
Started wonderful things for the Broncos. It isn’t just (“just”) that it was one of the greatest games ever played in college football, it kicked the door wide open for Boise State to start recruiting on a higher level. The results of those recruits ever since then are now self-evident.
“Stars” be bad-worded. It’s all smoke and mirrors, anyway. Pete knows how to find OKG.
