Former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese (1990-2009) said that one of the main factors in the BEasts' downfall was the lack of a "football leader". Someone with a top football program who could carry the flag so to speak, and represent the conference on a year to year basis.
"If they want to blame someone, blame me," Tranghese said. "The thing the Big East didn't have was a football leader -- a Florida, Alabama or USC -- a team that contended for the national championship every year or carried the league. It wasn't strong enough football-wise."
So basically they had a credibility problem.(Ya don't say?!) Does that maybe sound like something BSU could have helped out with?
