I would like to first start out with saying that I am a die hard BSU fan. I have had my moments when I was completely discouraged and utterly embarrassed by them. I am referring to the players of the team during the Pokey Allen era circa late 80's early 90's. They were in my opinion trouble makers, getting into bar fights, shoplifting, drugs and not playing well. They were a undisciplined bunch of donkeys and that is what I called them. True I was still a Bronco supporter and watched the games. My point is the team evolved with different coaches and discipline was instilled in the team. They grew into into a respectable football program and a force to be reckoned with. People who have followed the Bronco football program for a long time know that we have had up's and down's in our season's and our teams.
What has really got BSU on the map and in people's eyes is the "Decade of Dominance", during this time we have been treated very well by our team with great wins and bowl games. The last four years or if you would like the Kellen era was utterly remarkable, unheard of, outstanding, awesome, any other adjective you would like to put it. When we played other teams those years with scores ending in the 30's,40's to 0 sometimes it was closer and some losses. The point is when we would play teams back then we already knew the outcome of the game before it was even played, and with some it was even starting to get boring with the high scoring that we were able to do. Well the Kellen graduated and now is playing for the Detroit Lions, and that era is over so now we start a new one. Joe was mentored by Kellen and was his backup, he would come in after he had the team up so far in the 3rd quarter and play sometimes it was the second half. During that time he didn't have the pressure to perform because we had already won the game, he was just getting his snaps in and just needed to keep trying to score.
Here comes the new season and a new QB named Joe Southwick and he is the starting guy for the BSU Broncos! What a great honor to be chosen by your coaches, who by the way are paid to do this and are with these guys more than we are. When he is chosen and the media puts it out the social networks come alive, and this is where it gets irritating to me. Some congratulate but most that I seen was all about Nick Patti, why wasn't he the starting QB. Granted the kid has talent, he shows motivation, graduating high school early so he could start at BSU in January to be at spring practice. Now that shows definite motivation and desire to be a Bronco and that is TOTALLY AWESOME on his part! The reality of it is that the coaches have not started a true red-shirt freshman even Kellen didn't start as one. Now let's put ourselves in Joe's shoes for a minute and think this out, hey the coaches think I'm good enough but the fans hate me, pretty bummed out huh.
The first game makes the statement for the season and the team as a whole. Well we all can agree our defense is totally awesome no question about that, it's our offense that is struggling. First think of the pressure that Joe or anybody would be under starting out this year would be under and at that first game. First you are following behind Kellen Moore 50-3, Second you are playing Michigan State at home with 75,000 people hating you and a 5th ranked defense coming at you, Third you have in the back of you mind that the fans hate you and want Patti instead, Fourth BSU has been touted as the giant killers for the last 6 years and now you have to keep that going, Fifth you have had game time but the games were already won and the pressure was not there. Well here you go son go play football good luck, if you remember we almost won that game. The team is starting to come together and gel as a unit, on offense they did well last game more relaxed defense did fine so the score was not a 25-0 that was our fault we dropped the ball twice and gave them momentum.
What I am getting at is the fan base, we need to support them no matter what. These are kids in college not NFL players who get payed to do this. Heckling and calling players names in stores when we see them is so wrong, would you do that to a kid in high school football or peewee. Maybe a word of encouragement would be better help boost the team moral, they know that Bronco Nation is behind them but a few can be rude and that hurts. I feel as Bronco Nation that we need to understand that Coach Pete knows what he is doing, everybody the last 7 years has chanted his name and praised him. Calling for firing of his coaches and benching of his players, publicly second guessing and calling him out is not the way to go people!! Remember that he is still a very sought after coach and if people keep this up and it gets to much he can easily go somewhere else, even though he really does love it here. Coach Prince is a very good coach and he will not be going anywhere just let the season play out and the team come together.
Everybody has a right to voice their opinion and guess what should have been done, but we are not in practices and don't see film of the teams, and are not with these KIDS everyday. Just remember that we are Bronco Nation and that the team needs our support, the Kellen era is over and we are in a new one. I personally think this is better football due to closer games and more action. The point is I too at one time was discouraged by the players but still supported them and watched the games, bought the merchandise even though I called them donkeys! (I never called a player that just when I talked to friends about the team). We don't have problems with players like that, the problem is getting comfortable in their new roles. Just support them, the team, the Ideals of the program, and Bronco Nation and enjoy the season, I think if we all start doing this we will be pleasantly surprised at the end.
