Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Not sure if many of you know Joey Martarano. He is a 6'3 230 lb junior committed to boise state, but faces a multi million dollar question. Go pro in MLB , or play D1 football and follow his fathers footsteps.

What would you do?

As someone who knows next to nothing about the MLB draft

Isn’t true he’d be in the minor league in some small nondescript midwest town for a few years?

The battle for hierarchy is more intense the lower the class.

I cant remember his name because it is not common

but there was a guy that played for the Boise Hawks a few years back that also played for Notre Dame… he made it work… it kindof sucks for him that we dont have a baseball team so he could be a two sport athlete at BSU

as opposed to a nondescript town in the NW?

Yeah he’d be a minor league player — with a couple million in the bank.

As much as I love the broncos… if I were his daddy I’d be saying, “Take the cash son. Go to school when you are done.” (The time-value of money rules all else.)

It is always possible to come back later – Ok State anyone?

Signing bonuses in baseball are sometimes to generous to say no

plus a lot of baseball teams are now offering college scholarship money as an extra incentive, if baseball doesn’t work out for them.

Honestly, if I felt very good about my chances to make it in baseball I'd play baseball...

more money, longer career, less wear and tear on the body and in fewer places on the body.

The problem is that baseball is significantly harder to crack into at the actual MLB level than the NFL. There’s also less clear indications imo. With baseball, you could have all the skills but you get thrown to the wolves too early and your confidence is shattered, sending you back into the Minors for the rest of your career where you make a pittance compared to the MLB checks. The same can happen at the NFL but, for some reason, it’s far less often. In the NFL, as long as you have the requisite athleticism then hard work and a decent mind for the game will not only ensure success but possibly superstardom if you’re on the right team.

The fact his father was successful in the Majors makes the likelihood Joey could not only do the same, but also benefit from wiser council and potentially longer grace period, and makes me think he will likely go MLB.

Drew being that "guy"

I missed your post, sorry posting the same thing sir.

Joey’s dad actually played football for BSU back in the day. I couldn’t tell you for how long or what year it was, but i think Joey will end up playing for BSU. I know the kid and think that’s his true passion, so thats what i am banking on. I would like to see a local kid from my home town playing for the broncos on ESPN or even the MW coverage crap. His dad is probably thinking the same.

It's all good.

The post got buried a bit initially and I think with Brian Murphy’s article about it, it’s become a bit more relevant again. Seriously hope this kid ends up here.

Malcom Holland

Last year Malcom Holland had similar choices and Boise State didn’t want to work with a two sport player so he went to baseball.
