Boise State recruiting update: Who's in, who's coming, and who's left to get
Signing day will be here in three weeks, and assuming none of you all want to be surprised with who Boise State got this year, I think it's best that we review what the Broncos have been up to recruiting-wise over the past several months. This year's recruiting class, as per usual, is loaded with some talented players and more than a fair share of Texas kids. The only thing missing really is someone decommitting from Idaho to join Boise State. There's still time.
Here is a look at the incoming recruits so far in the 2012 Boise State recruiting class:

Thanks to Scout.com's ranking addiction, we know that the Broncos currently have the No. 57 recruiting class in the land and the top class in the Mountain West among teams that will be in the Mountain West after July. With 19 recruits verbally committed to coming to Boise State next season, the Broncos still have a chance to improve on that No. 57 ranking, which is important to some people even though it's really a made-up number.
Keep your eye out for these names in your Statesmans and Press-Tribunes in the coming days:
- CB Ryan Santos - Boise State commit Ben Weaver's high school teammate at Klein Collins HS in Texas
- DT Aaron Curry - Three-star big body from Fossil Ridge HS in Texas
- DE James McFarland - From West Monroe HS in Louisiana; also considering TCU (gross!)
- FB Johmel Charles - From Dominguez HS in California; yet to be offered, according to the Internt
- CB Diamonte Wiggins - Three-star corner from Lynwood HS in California
- LB Jeremiah Allison - Three-star outside 'backer from Susan Miller Dorsey in California
- CB Alphonso Marsh - Four-star corner from Dominguez HS in California; seems to be favoring Utah and Washington
- CB Anthony Standifer - Decommitted from Michigan and now interested in going to pretty much every school
- S Kenny Iloka - Brother of George Iloka
There are sure to be other names of prospects that are on Boise State's radar. Fill me in by leaving a comment on this post.
So now that we've covered who's coming and who's on the radar, let's take a look at what positions might be left for Boise State to target. Here is a breakdown by position of who the Broncos have signed, sealed, and almost delivered:
| QB | RB | WR | TE | OL | DL | LB | CB | S | K | ATH |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
And here is a look at the breakdown of Boise State's positions by class:
| QB | RB | WR | TE | OL | DL | LB | CB | S | K | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sr | - | 3 | 3 | 1 | 7 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 1 |
| Jr | 1 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 3 | 6 | 1 | 2 | 2 | - |
| So | 1 | - | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 1 |
| RFr | 1 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
| Fr | 1 | 2 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
Conclusion: Get more offensive linemen and/or turn some running backs into offensive linemen.

What do you think about Boise State's recruiting class so far? Who should the Broncos go after next? What positions would you like to see BSU stock up on? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Anybody know why Rory Connop
is already on the roster? I noticed it during the season.
by Future_Demagogue on Jan 17, 2012 8:11 AM PST reply actions
Surprised we didn't already land Santos
He was sky-high on the Broncos even when Marcus Rios was still a commit. He even made it known at one point that he’d be “committing soon” but never pulled the trigger. It makes you wonder if with 3 corners already verballed (at the time) something was communicated to him about his spot. Seems like Rios’ spot would be open with him decommitting.
Connop has been on campus for a while. Could have been a grayshirt type situation…but honestly, I have no idea when his eligibility clock started. I hear rumors he’ll be moving over to the O-line…but can’t substantiate.
the Rios decommit still kind of bugs me.
i’m in no way mad or disgruntled at him, he’s got to do what he feels is right for him, but just the thought of anyone decommitting from Coach Pete boggles my mind.

Boise State yanked his scholly offer
He was doing too much “shopping”

i know.
i just consider what he did decommitting even though he didn’t formally do it.

Indeed.
Might have been worse to commit to Coach Pete and then play footsie with a bunch of other schools.

I agree. Still unnerved by the ordeal.

He's a kid....
It would have been great to have him but I’m happy we pulled the scholly from him. I dont real hold any hard feelings, he’s a kid. I was doing stupid things when I was 17 too. He’ll probably regret it when UCLA is not bowl elgible and gets whacked by 50 to USC and Boise State is headed to a BCS game next January tho…
My favortie memories of college is being up in the student section, taking off my left shoe, and holding it up in the air whenever #89 made a catch.

what's always fun is the re-rankings.
take a look at SI’s reranking of the 2007 class. It is unfortunate, and quite painful, to read the recap but still pretty cool.

Too bad Coach Pete is above taking that little bit of info with him when recruiting.

Conduct unbecoming...
of an OKG. Gets you every time. Not everybody can be an OKG, and thats OK.
Boise State football is akin to molten lava. You can see it and perhaps run from it, but you can't stop it.
I love the "ATH" position.
“we don’t know where we want to stick you right now, so you can just be our roving athelete.”
it’s good to see a kid from Idaho on the commit list, it’s just too bad there aren’t more.

Marty Tadman came in as an "ATH"
I think that Dean will follow Tadman’s lead and end up at safety.

i hope Tadman follows Yates' lead
and comes back as a coach.

The ATH designator...
Just means that particular recruit excels at multiple positions, usually both sides of the ball. This is easier for scouting services to write down that a whole bunch of slashes. i.e. WR/CB or DE/RT. They just use ATH instead.
Mark me down for "awesome".
AWE for short.
(that works several ways, which was an unintended, but pleasant, side effect.)

well, I'm impressed!

True, but there seems to be an unwritten rule that ATH doesn't apply to guys over 220 lbs or so
which is of course discrimination against fatties.
We prefer "big-boned."

More DT's
DT’s seem to be one of the most difficult positions to recruit. They also seem to be the difference between a bend and try not to break defense vs a dominant run stopper and qb crusher defense like we’ve had the last several years.
The most important get left, would be Aaron Curry. Good size and athleteticism. Need to fill a depleted D-line with someone who can get into the rotation quickly and contribute.
Billy Winn was a rare get for a BSU program. Aaron Curry is that type of kid.
How many scholarships
do we have to give this season? I like the fact that we are finally smoothing out our numbers for each class. Numbers can be decieving, though. How many TE or FB are counted as DL or the other way. You could be a second team LB but a first team FB/TE on short yardage plays. I used to worry about what positions a kid would play but if the kid has a great attitude it doesn’t matter. After the off-season conditioning and weight room the coaches will find a role for a kid with the right attitude. I just like the way our coaches operate.
Probably should put Tyler Gray in there...
2011 LB who switched from Hawaii to Boise State after a non-enrolled grayshirt. My guess is he’ll end up at DE.
Cleveland Wallace
Saw him on Scout this morning. Currently a soft verbal to Oregon State, but seems he is shopping a bit before signing day. 3-star from Oak Grove HS in Cali. Visits campus on the 20th. Also, Anthony Standifer is visiting campus the 27th. Reshawn Hooker went from being high on both BSU and UCLA to low on both, which seemed odd, but oh well. We also have a offer in on Will Latu, a JC transfer who was formerly committed to Auburn. 6’5, 310lb OT. Dylan Cozens seems like he would be a good get. 6’5 235 DE out of Chaparral HS in AZ. He is a sleeper prospect, or was, before the Broncos offered. Has 7 other Big 6 offers as well as NAU. Michael Mann was an ASU commit, but is now looking around after Erickson getting fired. 6’5, 220 DE. Dont know much about him, but he has a few other offers.
Love the fact
that we are pulling in folks from overseas. I think that is an area that a lot of other colleges overlook and as such we end up with some untapped potential. I know they were FE students and as such technically committed from local high schools, but having Cedric Febis, Ricky, or even Gerardo, hasn’t hurt the Broncos any.
I hate to be the first to point this out but Nick Patti is short.
Ooohhh I’m funny. Also, Elliot Hovte is listed as a OLB but I thought he was a DE? I know it could be interchangeable some times but at 270lbs, seems like he’d be a little big for the OLB position…although I hope that isn’t the case. OR is it that he’s actually 270 kilos? Again, I’m hilarious.
I’m also really excited about our next Lee Hightower type of a commit. I was sooo not that excited about him since he didn’t have any offers (except to an Ivy League school) clear after LOI day. He obviously proved my lack of excitement to be a bit non Boise State Footballesq, since the kid looks to be a star. I’m sure there is going to be a name that no one saw coming that will end up a great get for us.

i think it is pretty cool Hightower turned down the ivy league.

SDSU
SJSU
Washington
and considered Penn and Yale

Interesting that ESPN has Patti ranked as our worst recruit.
(Hovte hasn’t been ranked so I wont count him.)
good.
i’m glad they have no love for our recruits in general. shoulders with chips!!

Speaking of ESPN and their high school "rankings"...
Did anyone watch their broadcast of one the High School All Star Game(or whatever it was called) a couple of weeks ago? I didn’t watch much of it but they ran a critique of each player as he showed up in the game, listed the school the kid had verballed to along with “strengths” and “needs to improve” categories. Guess what they listed in the latter category for one kid? “Height.” That’s when I changed channels. Clowns, indeed.
The battle for hierarchy is more intense the lower the class.
I think we should start referring to him at Pati
Cause I’m getting very confused every time I read just Nick and thin you all are talking about me!
Coach Pete math...
RCR – BCSR = CF
RCR = Recruting Class Rank (#57, about avg for us I guess)
BCSR = BCS ranking at year end (#8 avg ranking in the final BCS poll avg last 4 years)
CF = Coaching factor – the positive or negative effect the coaching staff has on the recruit class as part of a team.
Anyway, my admittedly completely non-scientific formula indicates Coach Pete and staff are geniuses, because they score a +49!!!!
Duh.
In the same vein, there are some supposedly elite programs that waste a lot of talent.
either that or it completely invalidates the dubious recruit and class ranking star system. I am going with the former.
Boise State football is akin to molten lava. You can see it and perhaps run from it, but you can't stop it.
Players joining the team in January.
It appears from the Broncosports roster that Patti is the only freshman from this recruiting class attending school this January. Does anyone know if that is the case? The Juco guys (Lawrence and Peters) are on there as well as the internationals (Hoyte and Connop) but nobody else.
Hayden Plinke
though not part of this recruiting class, will be joining them. He is a greyshirt from the last recruiting class. 6’4 TE I believe. Someone correct me if I am wrong please.
you are so correct

Iloka
Has BSU offered Kenny Iloka? Scout shows him with no offers.
I agree with BF4L. I’d like to see another DT, or two.

I REALLY like the two corner prospects that are still available...
Both seem to have the skills and footwork to excel at cornerback. Size is very good, longer and bigger than our usual corners, and both are very athletic! I’m a fan of both, but if I had to say one, I’d have to say Anthony Standifer by a very small margin. Both are great backs, hope their visits go well and we can sign one of them! Maybe even two with the 2011 experience of no backups… First URL is Anthony Standifer, second is Wallace
Why???
When any of the “Big Boy” schools has a big loses a few big players to graduation no one expects them to decline the next year. After all of the success it has had even with multiple class changes over the past fifteen years since moving up to Div 1A, why does everyone still expect Boise State to fail next season?
They actually do drop bcs schools when they lose large amounts of players...
Auburn was 14-0 in 2010, MNC winners, returned 7 starters, were 23 in 2011 preseason poll.
We were 13-1 this year, will return about 7 full time starters, and will probably be in 20s or so next year.

But it seems that the media still expected them do better than they did.
Plus certain schools like USC, OU, Bama are always given the benefit of the doubt.
HEY KEVAN!!!!
Get on the coach Pete hotline and tell him to offer Kenny Iloka. I don’t even care if he’s good, I just get a warm feeling inside knowing that there is an Iloka on the roster!!! Check out his Yahoo sports profile:
Medium interest?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!!? WTF KENNY?
I wouldn’t pay much attention to any of the guys listed besides McFarland (not offered), and he is still a hard TCU lean.
Cleveland Wallace and Dylan Cozens are the only ones that still have offers. Aside from unexpected commits, these are the only two close to committing.
McFarland FYI
Was a TCU verbal then he opened it back up. His former hs teammate (Chuck Hunter DT) played for the Frogs this year as a true frosh. McFarland was said to be holding out for a LSU offer but it never came. He will be at TCU this weekend with his teammate Lathan (6’6" DE) and then at OU the next weekend. McFarland has been hard to read and more or less has taken himself off the grid since decomitting so I would think BSU has a good as a shot as anyone since he at one time listed them in his top 2. Not really sure where he ends up but I am bracing myself for disapointment with him…
P.S. Weaver is a really good get. He reminds me a lot of Tank when he was coming in. [insert lame BSU armband joke here]
"Football is a violent game played by violent people, so put a smile on your face, murder in your heart and lets go kick these f***kers in the mouth" -Dick Bumpas, TCU Defensive Coordinator

No visit to BSU, but he does have an offer. Another TE for the stable?
