My critique of Kellen Moore @ Dallas Cowboys SB Nation site
I made two comments
Comment 1:
I don’t know how things will turn out honestly. Here’s the bad…
- He can throw a deep ball as far as anyone else but he has to wind up for it whereas Drew Brees, for example, can just snap it out there. There’s a big difference in release time and how much telegraphing the safety gets.
- I’m not sure he can put enough zip on the ball to throw the 10 yard out pattern, a staple of many timing based passing attacks, before NFL CB’s can cut in front and pick it. That’s not to say he has no zip at all but I suspect it fades fast the further away from him his target is.
Here’s the good…
- Looks his receivers open. This characteristic could help mitigate a lack of elite zip on the ball. One of our defensive backs once said he saw Kellen Moore look the entire defense off to his left and then throw to a wide open WR on the right…while still looking the safety on the left IN THE EYES. That’s sick, I don’t care who you are.
- Ridiculously deep understanding of how defenses work, can process information wicked fast (both presnap and during play), QB coach level understanding leads to higher gains from film study than most, crunches film like Peyton, genuine love for all aspects of the game, most prepared player on the field…all the time…bar none
- Impervious to pressure, maintains calm in the huddle regardless of circumstances, transmits this calm to rest of team. This has been stated multiple times by several teammates.
- Humble nature, high character, quiet homebody who won’t get in trouble, deflects praise to teammates, deflects criticism from teammates, team oriented outlook.
Maybe I’m biased some but I gotta say, I have been complimented multiple times on my objectivity and ability to critique my own favorite teams, and I’m telling you guys this dude looks like the second coming of Joe Montana. Joe was taller but he too was known to have a ‘weak’ arm. Time will tell, I think the arm strength factor is the biggest make or break on Moore but he has got everything else in spades.
Comment 2:
Darron Thomas might become UDFA, he’s that bad. I think I already mentioned this to you in a later comment Rena but wanted to post here as well.
Seriously folks, if you’re interested in DT you need to take a hard look at Oregon highlights on youtube or something. Now check this out; Oregon, while utilizing Chip Kelley’s Blurball offense has NEVER beaten a top tier run defense losing twice to Boise St. and once to tOSU, Auburn, and LSU.
Here’s why: That offense is conducive to ‘athletic’ dual-threat QB’s who can run….these athletes can normally run better than they can throw. The entire offense is predicated on the threat of the run, sucking the defense twds the LoS, then running playaction and allowing the QB to roll out and hit a fairly wide open WR streaking across or down the field.
Now watch some highlights of Oregon getting beat. What you will notice is that while they can use the run to open up the pass, they cannot use the pass to open up the run. This is because DT is not accurate or able to read a defense well enough to pinpoint strikes, he can just wing it to relatively open, single covered guys. When a D can ctrl Oregon’s run game with the front seven and leave the back 4 or more to defend the pass properly, Oregon doesn’t just slow down, they completely farging implode.
Now, compare DT’s above posted stats to this mystery QB (an * = Known School Record, a ** = Known NCAA Record)…
……………………….Darron Thomas……………………….QB X
2011 Comps:……………211………………………………….326
2011 Attempts:…………339…………………………………..439
2011 Cmp :……………..62.2…………………………………74.3% *
……………………….Darron Thomas………………………QB X
2011 Pass YDS:……..2, 761……………………………..3,800
2011 TD’s:……………..33 *…………………………………43 *
2011 Int’s:………………07…………………………………..09
2011 QB Rating:……..158.7……………………………..169.15
……………………….Darron Thomas……………………….QB X
Career Comps:…………449………………………………..1,157
Career Attempts:………733………………………………..1,658
Career Cmp :…………..61.26………………………………69.78%
………………………..Darron Thomas……………………….QB X
Career Pass Yds:……..5,910…………………………….14,667 *
Career TD’s:……………..66 *………………………………142 *
Career INT’s:…………….17…………………………………28
Career QB Rating:……150.1……………………………..169.15
………………………..Darron Thomas……………………….QB X
Career Record:……………23-3………………………………50-3 **
QB X is Boise State’s Kellen Moore. He gets knocked for his competition but I’d argue that A) Thomas’s competition was not substantially better in all actuality. Washington St. may rank much higher than Wyoming but both should be beaten equally as bad. Oregon didn’t carry the OOC strength that BSU did either. B) Moore’s stats either stayed relatively even or IMPROVED against his toughest competition…competition that included Oregon, VT, and Georgia all of them eventual conference champions those years.
Someone is likely to draft DT but it will be a mistake imo. Moore ran a much more pro-set type offense and has a far better pro skillset imo.
So, what do you all think...in all seriousness

Beautiful analysis as usual, Pjohn.
Thanks, and agreed.

can we
get a link for the story? I for one will be very interested where Kellen goes. I also can’t wait for John Gruden’s QB show before the draft, only if Kellen is on it of course,,

It is just a fan post but here is the link
Please just read if interested and be very mindful of any comments, keeping them on topic of the original post. I would not want to flood this board with comments on Boise St. guys b/c I think it would make our fanbase appear desperate for acceptance and that is the last thing BSU needs as it climbs into the realm of respectability lol.

Way to show the colors, John
Got some nice comments on their board about the Broncos and their program. Pete for a medal, indeed!

Yeah Chief, I strive to subtely wipe away ignorance by illustrating valid points without going so overboard that it welcomes backlash or stirs up the pride of another fanbase etc.

Great comments and research pjohn
I think Kellen will do great if he gets in the right system with the right coaching staff and does’nt get shoved under the rug like a lot of other great talents do. i.e. Ian Johnson.
He may not have the physical attributes as far as his height and running ability but has he ever been put in a situation where he has had to run. He’s willing to stay in the pocket untill the last second until someone comes open or he throws the ball away. He’s not the type to bail and start running, because he knows someone will get open.
We are glad you are in Idaho now because you are a great alli to Bronco Nation. The best vacation I ever had was in San Antonio.
Nice!!!!
I for one think Kellen will improve leading up to the combine. The scouts will let him know what he needs to improve. Given that, there is no doubt in my mind he’ll improve in those areas. Trust me, he hasn’t reached his potential. I hope the Cowboys pick him up. We need him. Bad!!! I gave up on Romo 2 seasons ago.

i voted great backup.
though i do hope i’m massively incorrect and he’s a solid starter (and HoF worthy later on).
My QB has an AWARD named after him. How about yours?!
Twitter: @damienbsu
Drafted, yes but to the Cowboys I hope not.
I would hate to see him get tangled up in the Jerry Jones mess. They are almost as bad as the Oakland Raider mess.
No disrespect to the Cowboy or Raider homers out there but those teams are train wrecks.
Jones need’s to step out of the way.
I still say Seattle in the third round.
Haha...
Seattle is in more of a mess then Dallas. We just have a QB issue. Seattle has a whole team issue. Seattle will be firing their coach this next season, if not next. Which means Kellen probably will get thrown into the fire. Dallas has receivers. A line and a ok Defense. Seattle has none of thy above. Romo is the only reason Dallas sucks. And Romo will stay a starter for at least one more year. Which means Kellen will have a year to learn. With a coaching staff that will be there at least 2 more years.

I dunno about that. I've really become disillusioned with this past season and it has been something that has been building for some time.
I’ve been watching Dallas since just prior to Jimmy Johnson taking over as Head Coach in 1989 or 90 or something. Jimmy won b/c he told Jones where to shove it and Jones fired him for it. Since that time Dallas has been in various stages of mediocrity and declination.
That’s something approaching two decades worth of losing, that’s with total roster turnovers, that’s with different drafting strategies, that’s with different coaching staffs. There is one common denominator and his name is Jerry Jones.
Jones’ influence permeates that organization and brings a totally different bad dynamic to it. Just like we have a culture of winning here at BSU, Dallas has a culture of pressure and having to bend over backwards to get the “GM” to sign off on the guys you want to draft. I think Jones influence is so bad and so pervasive that I don’t think the organization can move forward even if he stepped away as GM now. I think he has to leave completely in order for Dallas to rebuild itself.
We’ll see what Jason Garrett can do, he’s pretty smart and has Jones’ trust for now, but I’m not holding my breath.

I don't know
what Seattle team you have been watching but that team had a top 10 defense at the end of the season, the running game came around mid-season as Lynch was the leading rusher in the long from mid-season to the end of the season. In fact I would go as far as to say that the Seahawks are a QB away from being a really good team. Though the team ended with the same record, it is a much better team than the year before. Plus the fact they have the youngest starting line-up in the league.

I've been watching a team...
that plays in the worst division in football. That alone tells you that 10th ranked defense is a lie. They beat Chicago and Philly without their starting QB’s. They beat Baltimore, but so did the Titans, Chargers, and Jaguars. They beat the Giants, but they lost to the Redskins twice. And the games in between the Seahawks game they won by a combined 7 points. So tthe Giants hadn’t even hit they’re stride yet. Dallas even beat Seattle. Dallas was winning 5 the games they lost in the 4th Quarter. Which proves they were at least capable of winning every game. Besides the Philly game. It also proves that The QB isn’t that great. Turning the ball over and making dumb decisions in the fourth quarter in each and everyone of them games.
'Trust me, i can protect myself. I'm a Boise State Broncos Football fan.'
no what you see
is a young team that was inconsistent. I would say this year the NFC West was not the worst division in football. They were in every game late except the one in Pittsburgh. You also didn’t mention they were a botched goal line snap away from beating the 49’ers. You didn’t mention that they were a team that started 2-6 and finished 5-3, imagine with a off-season they could have gelled even earlier. If you think that defense is not good, you have not been watching them. Yes, Jackson is not good, but he did play better than everybody expected. The bread and butter for the Seahawks is that running game..

5-3?
Like I said, they beat Chicago and Philly without their starting QB’s. Trust me, they would have went 3-5 if Vick or Cutler played.
'Trust me, i can protect myself. I'm a Boise State Broncos Football fan.'
maybe
maybe not.. you do not know that.. you said they were a mess.. I disagree, they are more stable now than they have been for years.. they DID beat the Bears WITH Cutler the year before with a WORSE team IN Chicago.. so no you do not know.. seems to me you just do not like the Seahawks, cause you do not know about the team at all..

It is my opinion that Kellen could be outstanding with teams SF or Philly
West Coast will be his bread and butter imo. The other thing he could be good at is a spread attack that thrives on the short passing attack and goes deep every now and again. NE is kind of like this and, maybe, Green Bay as well.

I disagree...
Any QB is good playing the West Coast Offense. Even average. Example, Alex Smith. This Dallas team has had something going for them for the last 5 years. Problem is Romo. His decision making over that span has been bad, in the playoffs. Regular season has been pretty good. But not Playoffs. He makes to many bone headed decisions. Moore would be an exelllent QB in this system. Proof, Romo. The Cowboys have the running game down. Kellen can make a Offensive Coordinator look good. Especially the way he can read a defense. The recievers are execellent route runners. Bryant, not so much. But his overall athleticism makes up for it. This team could have beat the Giants. If it hadnt been for Romo. It seems like he’s always looking for the big throw. A lot of times he forgets about his check down options. This O-line is good enough. Sorry, but I believe the Cowboys are headed in the right direction. Again, the only thing that is holding them back is Romo. Besides, Jerry might be stepping down. I heard a quote he make last week after watching the Giants and Falcons game I believe. Go to NFL.com. Go to team news. And click on Dallas.

I asked the Seahawk Nation a simple question
Could you use another Drew Brees?
Life is tough, but it's tougher if you are stupid. Sgt Styker USMC (John Wayne)
Yes, I would love to have him on the Seahawks
However, from everything I read, Coach Carrol wants a mobile QB that can extend plays, on the other hand he also wants a game manager that will not make the bonehead plays.. I am thinking they would want more of an RG3 QB.. I do know that there was at least Boise State games that had Seahawk scouts there. Don’t know exactly who they would be looking at, but my guess would be Doug Martin, one of the D lineman and Kellen Moore.. Which basically is the same one everyone else is looking at..

Yep
The teams that have a running game and need a pocket “classic QB” will be interested. The Patriots, Chargers, Ravens, Texans, Saints, even the Cowboys are examples of that. Depending on how Joe Flaaco does the next few weeks, who knows, the Ravens may go shopping for a backup that fits.
God, Moore in Baltimore would be a nightmare for the rest of the league.
Baltimore wants ball control and clock control. The short passing game, the power run, the interception free games, the audibles to an intermediate route or playaction deep pass. Couple all that with the defense and you have a farging dynasty. Holy smokes that’s frickin’ frightening.

KELLEN MOORE @DALLAS COWBOYS
I think you are just about right on target. Good critique! I have been around the game since 1950, and I have watched all of the QB’s since Van Brocklin and Y A Tittle. I coached for over 50 yrs, and have seen a lot of QB’s come and go, be glorified and viloified. I would take Kellen as my Q B any day, simply because of his absolutely outstanding ability to find and reach that open receiver. He is uncanny at that. NO, he doesn’t move fast, NO, he can’t run, but WHO CARES.
HE IS THE BEST PURE PASSER I HAVE EVER SEEN, AND THAT TAKES IN MORE THAN A COUPLE!
