Jerrell Gavins out for the Nevada game, possibly longer

Ed's note: This story began in the FanPosts, and I'm republishing it here now that we have some slight confirmation from the news guys. This is the latest.

Boise State corner Jerrell Gavins will miss the Nevada game and maybe more, according to a Boise State spokesman. Coach Pete will address Gavins' injury after the game today. The injury apparently occurred during practice this week, and if you dare to read after the jump, you'll see what the speculation is.

Star-divide

Here's the original FanPost:

I just got word from someone that is in the same class as #4 starting cornerback Jerrelle Gavins. She said he rolled into class in a full leg immobilizer and crutches. Apparently he  blew his knee out in practice and is done for the year!!??!! Someone find more info on this!! N O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O!!!!!!!!!

Gavin’s out for Nevada…..
A source close to the team told me today that Jerrell Gavin’s messed up his knee today in practice. Possibly out for the year.

I sent Crissie a text asking about this, I will let you know what she says.

Gavins has been real close to her family since he’s been here.

The injuries have been brutal this year

I don’t recall seeing so many injuries so early in the year. Perhaps the 3-game turf monster couldn’t find DJ so it found Gavins. That is a major bummer!

I certainly hope

Silver Lining

1st of all I hope this is not true.

But if it is true and it had to happen then the timing is good. In football you are allowed to medical redshirt as far as 3 games into the season, so Gavins can still play next year. Anyone that gets hurt in or after the Nevada game will not be able to medical redshirt.

by Jay Weston on Sep 30, 2011 9:25 AM PDT reply actions

I agree on the timing being the only decent part of this

but this won’t be the same team next year… If he’s out, he’s missing something pretty special. Depth at CB is shallow – I’m starting to freak out a bit.

This year has just felt SO weird, all the way around.

I saw him on crutches....

….in class yesterday, don’t know anything beyond that.

My brother

has a class after him this year and confirmed seeing him on crutches yesterday. I do not know what the injury is though. It would be fantastic if it was just a little tweak and he comes back next week. If not, he should get a medical redshirt, which will help next year. Injury bug is biting bad this year…

Quaylon Ewing-Burton picking up the flag or Ebo?

Geez, I’m still hoping this isn’t true, but multiple sightings appear to confirm.

Still doesn’t mean he’s “out for year”…but we needed him to blanket Mathews tomorrow.

by Drew Roberts on Sep 30, 2011 10:09 AM PDT reply actions

I'm guessing it will be QEB

He is listed as the backup on the depth chart. Both QEB and Ebo played quite a bit last week so either should be able to fill in. Not having Gavins to cover Rishard Matthews though is kind of frightening. Coach Pete always preaches that the next man needs to be ready to step up. Let’s hope they are ready.

QEB looked great in the scrimmages.

Hope it translates. Rishard Matthews is a tough man to cover.

by Drew Roberts on Sep 30, 2011 10:23 AM PDT up reply actions

this injury happened so late that

There isnt much we can do but put QEB out there and let him go to work….what a tough assingment though, dbs usually need a year in our system to get beat up on alittle before they really shine….Wilson and Gavins included.

The Bulldogs had no answers, so they called timeout. And at that moment, every single person in the stadium knew that Georgia was in over its head. It was instant singularity of Boise State's greatness.

Luckily

we still have Iloka and Febis back there as well as Taylor on the other side. It will definitely be an interesting situation for QEB. I think he can handle it. I think we see a big play out of Matthews, which causes QEB to settle down and locks Matthews down.

by Bronco05 on Sep 30, 2011 10:36 AM PDT up reply actions

Keep in mind too, that Nevada isn't a pass happy team. So, that could help.

However, they may try to take advantage of the injury to Gavins and throw more. But that will only lead to turnovers and pick-6’s!

It is the little out pass/ wr screen to Mathews that is killer...

Truth be told I was scared about Gavins being able to tackle him in space one on one but I was so excited to see it….anyone know how well QEB tackles??? Illoka will be the key here I think, he is the best open field tackler I have ever seen.

also will a 2nd string corner have the stones

to play tight press coverage against Mathews to prevent those 7 yard gains on 1st down? I KNOW Gavins would have…

Is there a possibility...

that we could have Doug Martin fill in for Gavins???? Play both sides of the ball? Is Doug the guy that could play most positions on both sides of the ball? Are Doug’s knees made of some type of experimental material that no one else on the team has access to?

by bleeedingblueinwyoming on Sep 30, 2011 10:49 AM PDT reply actions

Not enough time.

Even if Doug could step in for Gavins he does not have time to learn the defensive skeems and what his role would be.

by Jay Weston on Sep 30, 2011 11:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Sorry Jay,

I was kind of joking and should have indicated that in my comment. Having said that, I do believe that Doug is an amazing athlete and could do anything with a little coaching!! Thanks for your insight. I love watching Doug!

If this news is true, I am totally depressed and have my sad face on.

This young man worked so hard to make this, HIS year. He was off to such a great start. This has to be completely devasting to him. I really feel bad for this young man.

This sucks!!!!!

He was just getting some very justified recognition and was playing lights out!!!! Sucks for us fans but I really feel bad for him!! Like Crissie said this year is different than next year and w/o Kellen and company it will be hard to replicate this amount of talent that he has around him now!!!
