I think we can all agree that a major obstacle to BSU entering a BCS conference is the almighty dollar. The Treasure Valley TV market’s earning potential is not impressing anyone. If we want to get into an AQ conference we need to think outside of the box. I propose that BSU should contact the Big 12 and sell them on taking us into their conference with the caveat that we are willing to accept a smaller share of the TV revenue. Apparently, Texas is all about its members making less money…they should love it! BSU doesn’t bring a huge TV market, no problem; we will take of fraction of revenue. BSU has never been a program that needed huge money to compete; our coaches have always found players that fit into a system that doesn’t rely on big star power/over-rated high school recruits. We grow 5 stars; we don’t recruit them, type philosophy.
BSU’s current MWC TV revenue share is 1.8 million, even if we only take a fourth of the Big 12 revenue share we would still be increasing our own revenue by 400%. Having Big 12 teams come into our stadium on a regular basis would dramatically increase interest in stadium/facilities expansion. Can you imagine Texas, OU, OSU, Texas Tech, etc. playing annual games in Bronco Stadium? I believe we would expand to 60K plus seats overnight! My point is that the upside of participating in the Big 12 conference would out way taking a smaller piece of the TV pie. We could stipualte that after 3 years the Big 12 would revaluate the revenue that ESPN BSU games create, and give us more money if the numbers support a larger share.
