MUNSON'S GAZETTA:GOODBYE JULY!

July is of course named after Julius Caesar, a compelling figure. Bald, bisexual (his soldiers used to chant "Lock up your sons and daughters-Old Baldy is comin' to town!")his exploits changed the course of human history. In Shakespeares's "Julius Caesar" our sympathies, which should be with those attempting to establish a rudimentary democracy (Cassius, Brutus et al) are instead marshalled behind the fascists/monarchists Marc Anthony and Octavian who avenge Julius's assasination (it's not a murder; there is a clear political imperative to it). Antony would famously disparage his wife, Octavian's sister, leaving her for Cleopatra and attempting to create an eastern empire. Following their defeat in the Battle of Actium Octavian takes the name Augustus, whose month we observe now. Remarkable man; it is Augustus who raises Rome to a dominance that takes over 5 centuries to dissipate. Augustus is the first to formulate the 3 branches of government-executive, legislative, judicial-which forms the basis for the separation of powers embodied in our ver own constitution. Not bad for a despot. August is a key transitional month in Boise. By the middle of the month fall is establshing itself; it's still hot, but the intense "Boise Sunlamp" summer sun has taken a softer slant, and there is a distinct gloaming cast to the remaining hot days. It's clearer; I credit that to the cooler, moister mornings tamping down the dust. Hemingways' famous line "most of all he loved the fall", first written by him for another and then insribed on Ernest's tombstone, could in my mind be writ large across the Boise sky. I love fall here ; it's Boise at its best. And for us football lovers August is when we can truly begin to focus on the game. Heck, if it weren't for the lockout we'd already have had one (Hall of Fame). Drew's remarkable Countdown, which seemed almost (almost) irrelevant 100 days out, now takes on urgency, intensifying as camp opens and the endless conversaation OBNUG begins in earnest. I've always felt New Year's Day is bogus; the rythmns of our youth never leave us, and the REAL new year starts with the start of the school year in the fall, which neatly coincides with the commencement of the football season. We have much to look forward to. OBNUG continues to-well, I'm not sure what the word is. Establish itself? Whatever it is, I see a site that has developed, and continues to develop, traditions and quirks, continues to define and refine itself, and to my mind is already quite different that the other SB sites, in a good way. I sense a synchronicity between this site and our Boise State football program. Can't put my finger on it, but it's there. And that's about all I have to say on this first day of August. I salute the NUGies and say COMMENCE A' FESTIVAL! (ref Jack Nicholson as "The Joker" in "Batman")

This content was not created by OBNUG and therefore may not meet our standards. On the contrary, it probably exceeds them.
