Boise State won't be able to wear blue uniforms at conference home games, per the most asinine Mountain West rule imaginable.

As far as I know, the rule only applies to Boise State – something the Broncos agreed to when they joined the conference.

Yep

They had a good ten year stretch or so wearing all green (including helmets). I think last year they finally changed it up with white helmets and white pants. Their perfect season in ‘98 must be banished from the records! Obviously they cheated by wearing all green on the Superdome’s green turf!

The point is it shows a lack of balls by making it a prerequisite to entry into the MWC.

Especially since three of those teams up and left. The rest will be beaten handily regardless of uniform color. Whining, didn’t help that.

We've been through this on this board Ben

There are quite a number of teams out there that have solid green uniforms at several levels of CFB…that includes the helmets, Hawaii comes to mind as one example of several. All of them have accented color in their uniforms but then so do the Broncos in their Blue uniform, at an equal proportion to these “green” teams.

My Uncle brought up a point. He lives in Wisconsin and has coached youth hockey for years now. He says it could be a depth perception issue that takes a couple quarters to get used to. He says the look of hockey rink fake ice and outdoor real ice creates a depth perception issue that takes a while to get used to.

I think that may be a true statement in the case of a flat, 2D man-made surface vs. Mother Nature’s 3D real thing where you are skating on an actual lake or pond that really does go down a hundred feet or so.

However, when it comes to football fields, if that were the case, I would think there would be an issue between Astro Turf and real grass and an HUGE difference between the newer Multi-turf (where every 5 yards the color of changes between true green and almost yellow) and real grass.

If anything out there were to mess with a player’s balance or vision, it would be the multi-turf. This whole argument is really non-sensical imo and I have a feeling we’ll be proving that this year; it certainly didn’t help Fresno St. last year when we played in Orange uniforms.

Put bluntly, when a team comes to play on The Blue, the color of the turf is the least of their concerns. The 800 pound gorilla in the room isn’t the turf, it’s the pissed off bunch of fellas that call that turf home and want nothing more than to make the visitors very very aware of just whose house this is…and they have the talent and discipline to drive that point home with extreme prejudice.

For the record

I don’t consider the all blue uni’s on the blue turf a competitive advantage at all and it doesn’t bother me from that aspect. What bothers me about it is the aesthetics of it, meaning it is painful to watch on tv in my opinion and I know Petersen has insinuated similar things saying something about it being hard to break down film.

I understand tradition is everything in cfb and the all blue has become your teams identity but do you guys really think that it is that criminal to rock a little orange or white in your uni’s or pants? I think it would look damn good and I loved the look of the orange on the blue when you guys played Fresno.

Thx for the clarification

I thought our Blue uniforms in last year’s bowl game were absolutely fantastic and they I think they had enough orange in them to meet your criteria. They really looked great and it was the orange that pulled it all together.

I also liked the all orange unis and have been a fan of going with a darker shade of blue or a two tone look before. However, I don’t much like it being forced on us and I especially don’t appreciate the argument behind it b/c I think it’s a quick assumption by people that really have no idea what they are talking about…it’s just different and they draw the conclusion that it must be an advantage.

I'm the 12 th man its my job its my duty.

by Dothework on Jul 26, 2011 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Brady was overlooked for completely different reasons

Brady was being pushed by Henson and unfairly split playing time with him. That sent a bunch of teams running. He was a skinny and awkward looking dude who just didn’t look like an NFL qb at the time (like Moore, i guess). But Brady was putting up 60% completion percentage in the Big 10 and time and time won games for Michigan, or pulled them back in when Henson self destructed. He had NFL like habits to look off the safety, could slide in the pocket like no one else and routinely made really incredible throws. Moore is like barely six feet tall, has a noodle arm and plays in an extremely QB friendly offense. Not to take away what he’s done at Boise State, because he’s incredible, but any comparison between Brady and Moore is a bad one. Brees would be better and there’s only so many Drew Brees’ in the world and its likely Moore won’t be the next.

Also, NFL scouts have learned a lot from Brady. Otherwise there’s no chance a guy like Matt Ryan is even a first round pick.

And yeah, we lost to JMU. Blame the Boise game some 4 days before that for that debacle. Steamrolled the ACC but its pretty obvious there was a significant gap between us (VT, Boise State) and the real elite teams (Oregon, Stanford, Auburn) last season.

by VT89 on Jul 26, 2011 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Noodle arm?

Did you see the throw against nevada? Your ACC maybe weak but we are not. Note how many Bronco’s where drafted and then picked up on free agency. Also note how many where drafted and picked up from the WAC. True we did not play in the toughfest conff. Don’t take away from what we have accomplished. You may also note our 2012 recruiting class. Don’t be a hater it makes your team look bad.

by Dothework on Jul 26, 2011 11:49 PM PDT up reply actions

As a QB and current QB coach

arm strength isnt denoted by how far you throw the ball. There’s a lot of dudes working at wal-mart who can throw a football 60 yards. Its the zip on the ball; in the NFL you need to be able to throw thirty yards on a line into a small window. From point A to B with little parabola, not affected by wind or rain. I do not believe Kellen Moore can do that.

With all do respect.

I feel sorry for your QB’s that you coach. You don’t even take in to acoount preperation. The most important part of a QB’s job. You have to be able to read a Defense, hence Payton Manning. How do you think Kellen does so well.

QB Rating

Are you seriously arguing Kellen is not a great QB. Take a look at last year’s QB ratings in the NCAA, and tell me who was tops. Oh, and I do believe that accuracy and completion percentage have something to do with that calculation. But you probably already know that, seeing as how you are an amazing QB and current pop warner QB coach.

by bbbroncos on Jul 27, 2011 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think he was arguing that

I doubt VT89 would say Kellen is not a great QB, he was echoing a sentiment about his pro potential that we’re going to hear a lot about in the next 9 months. It doesn’t make it right or wrong, it’s just an opinion.

by Nick Kroes on Jul 27, 2011 9:07 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes, Noodle Arm!

Anybody who saw the Hail Mary against Nevada saw a QB that needed a running start to throw the ball 50 yards. Kellen Moore has many gifts as a QB, a strong arm is not one if them.

by wolfsatz on Jul 27, 2011 2:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Watch the video again

The initial three steps forward was to buy a couple extra seconds of time. There was heavy penetration from the edge on Boise’s left side. Moving up in the pocket allowed Moore to buy two extra seconds for Young to get separation. If you watch closely, you can see that Moore actually moved to the side before he took his stride to throw the ball; therefore, any momentum gained from moving forward in the pocket would have been lost by the time he actually threw the ball.

Thanks to Ohio State's president, I will never root for a Big Ten football program again (except in extenuating circumstances that aid my primary rooting interest).

I don't know who would have won

but I don’t think Auburn would have done any better against us than they did against Oregon. I think we gameplan people pretty darned good. I think Georgia was literally, the last team to absolutely own the field against us.

I got no issues w/ Luck being the #1 NFL prospect by a fair stretch, I’d take him. But Boise St. was a very good team last year and I don’t think any team in America would have absolutely dismantled them. BSU gameplans people too dang well to allow for that.

I think comparing our performance against VT vs. Stanford’s as an absolute measurement is a mistake. Styles make fights and our gameplan for VT always had the potential to allow for a close game. We came in prepared to shut everything down and make Tyrod beat us by himself, banking on the good chance that he’d wear down and give up the ghost from sheer exhaustion. It worked.

Stanford blew VT off the field in the score department but so much of that came off things like turnovers inside your won 35 yd. line. That’s football and momentum is a serious factor in football games. IMHO, BSU was a TD away from blowing that game wide open before the fumbles got VT’s spirit back into it.

by pjohn56 on Jul 26, 2011 11:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I respect your argument

As a VT fan I will always contend that BSU was basically given a free 17 point lead by Tech in that game. The way we started was just awful, possibly as bad as the 41 point blowout by LSU. If Tech starts even somewhat coherently I think we would have won that game, but that could be the fan in me speaking.

Peterson is a fantastic coach and gameplans really well, but Cam Newton was out of this world last season and Auburn had a fair few tests to overcome. They beat a spread team (Clemson), a power team with great receivers (Alabama), an all around solid team with QB issues (LSU), a great passing team (Arkansas), a team with a GREAT runningback (USC), and so on and forth. I think they had all the bases covered and would have won just by sheer talent advantage. Granted, after a month off you never know what will happen but Auburn was an incredible team last season.

BSU was obviously a really good team last year. The Nevada game was a fluke and not a fair sample by which to judge them, but I simply don’t think they could have beaten a team like Oregon, LSU, Auburn, Ohio State or Alabama.

by VT89 on Jul 26, 2011 11:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I think they would have owned Oregon

I have specific reasons for that that would take up a lot o f space but basically it’s our defensive scheme vs. their offensive scheme. The Ducks can’t, and haven’t, beaten a team that can play good run D for a long time now.

Alabama was very balanced offensively and terrific on defense. I don’t know, that’s tough to overcome but I stick to my original point…they wouldn’t have destroyed us.

I think we would have beaten last year’s LSU team. Their defense was amazing but they were one-dimensional offensively. Too easy to set up a good gameplan for. Jefferson did well in his Bowl game but that was comparably speaking.

Ohio St. and the Big 10 are not elite. For the Big 10 I have felt Iowa and Wisconsin have been solid teams as of late. Ohio St. seems t struggle when faced with balance and quality outside the conference.

Auburn didn’t face an elite QB last year. The whole key to stopping Auburn was to shutdown their running game and then stop Cam on the ground while keeping decent secondary coverage. No one could do it and I’m not saying we could either, that game was never played. But I don’t think they would have blown us out, our defense was much better than Oregon’s even though I felt the Ducks performed admirably and were very well conditioned. The fact remains that one of the keys to victory for Auburn was owning both lines of scrimmage. Boise St. was simply very very very good in those specific areas. So again, maybe we don’t win but we would have had the guns to belong on that field at the very least and potentially more than that.

I think this is a valid point

BSU has been dominant on The Blue. I think they would still be dominant with a steady diet of good teams and we have evidenced that against anyone who will actually come here. I understand the cashflow thing btw, so I’m not calling people cowards for not coming to a 35,000 seat stadium.

I’d point to the Oregon game, where we really crushed their whole offensive scheme and they went on to run wild over their entire conference to the Rose Bowl, as an indicator of just how lethal we are at home regardless of the opponent.

But until we can get multiple good teams to come here in a season then that is a belief that really can’t be proved. Your opinion can’t be proven either but I feel the burden of proof is on us. That said, it;s an academic argument. As long as Boise St. can run through it’s schedule, blowing out the teams they need to while winning the ones that are expected to be close, they will go to a major bowl game.

I don't think that was it at all

I think they just don’t know what to do when their run game gets throttled. They don’t typically have QBs that are good at reading defenses and threading the needle and their Blur ball philosophy turns against them when they start going 3 and out a lot.

We crushed their run game and so we crushed them. Then they really start to open up and most the Nation screamed whoa! these guys are different than early ion the season. Then they got shut down by tOSU, again due to not being able to beat a team that could play sound run defense.

For all of Oregon’s hype and point totals and yardage numbers they really are a one trick pony. They can pass when their run game is going and the defense gets sucked into the front 7 opening up 3 yards of space aor more around their WR’s. But if the front 7 can stop that run game, leaving the back 4 to play tough pass defense the Ducks are all but finished. It gets worse of course if you can stop their run w/ your front 4.

The same Boise State team that showed up on Sept 3rd, 2009 was a different team that won the WAC? Just because Oregon improved doesn’t mean Boise State didn’t either. It was both teams opening game that season.

Oregon had a bad game plan and played with too much emotion. Plain and simple.

You have to prepare to win not just think you’re going to.

In two games against Oregon, they provided plenty of bulletin board material for Boise State to be motivated enough to beat them both times.

They had 152 TOTAL yards in the last game. They didn’t even convert a third down until midway through the 3rd quarter. But that had nothing to do with a good team getting owned by a better one? Masoli could hardly get a pass off before pressure was all over him. Their running completely stopped. If not for Boise’s own first game jitters fumbling the ball away in the redzone two or three time, they win 40-8, not 19-8.

In other words, Boise could wear pink-on-pink and still beat you in Bronco Stadium by 30 points. The Broncos could wear pink-on-pink with ankle weights and beat you 14 points. - Paul Myerberg, Pre Snap Read

Then next year, they will either beg for blue or petition the conference to rule that we have to play in the colors each opponent in the conference prefers.

When that doesn’t work, they’ll want us out. We have too many advantages for them. We are not fair. Either that or they start growing a sack.

That conference is less than nothing without us. They dare to get on our bad side?

I say we do everything within our power to utterly destroy that conference by any means necessary.

It has everything with them limiting our sovereign choice to wear the uniforms we please. If the MWC thinks its relevant enough to tell us what home uniforms to wear, then clearly the league is 100,000,000 times worse than Hitler, Al Queda, and Satan combined… No Contest…

MWC my new most hated conference…. I’d rather go back to the WAC without Fresno, Hawaii, and Nevada than to be subjected to it’s BS “authority.”

Perseverance Spay

What makes a person strange and awkward initially becomes the same thing that is their calling card, desired/respected, and imitated if and when they establish themselves in a positive light. We are the only ones allowed to have a colored field in Division I…that can be exploited.

It’s all about symbology; right now, quite a few ppl are waiting for BSU to burn out and slide back down to their rightful position. Ten years from now, The Blue will represent a titan program that will beat you black and blue if given the slightest chance and possesses a hornet’s nest of a crowd.

Funny how kicking someone’s teeth in tends to stop the snickering and leads to bickering. Four years ago people laughed about this program. Now, the ones who can keep their distance sling accusations and look for reasons why we shouldn’t be allowed to contend w/ them. The ones who have already been clipped or are within striking distance remain silent and just stand there smoldering as they wait to see how everything turns out. We’re in Phase II of this program’s genesis…people are frightened and alert, they are looking for ways they can limit us and establish handicaps in their favor. Keep swinging for the fences.

in my heart for teams like Idaho, now belong purely to Craig Thompson, the Mountain West as a whole….every team in it, and esepcially San Diego State. Words cannot express my outrage. You Don't Get It

Boise State, desperately trying to get out of the WAC, was offered by the Mtn West, if and only if, they agreed to change the color of their uniforms at home games against Mountain West Competition. This happened in June of ‘10 and we are just now hearing about it (for obvious reasons). Did the Mountain West need to create a stipulation as classless as this? At that time, Utah, BYU and TCU were all members and by all accounts it looked as if the MWC might just get AQ status. Boise State’s hand might as well been forced. Watch the video in which Craig Thompson, with a smug smile on his face, lays it all out.
How would you feel if the ACC said “Ah you know what VT, you’ve been winning a little too much (the MWC won’t even officially concede that point to Boise State) so we have decided that you can no longer play Enter Sandman or any other song or thing that pumps up your crowd, because the other schools have decided its a competitive advantage.” Does that sound rediculous to you? Now, you could say, “Ok then go F yourself ACC”, but that would mean that now you have to go play in the MAC. It’s a classless, tasteless act by the Mountain West, it’s commissioners and it’s member institutions. Really though, it should come as no surpirse I guess, it’s no wonder Utah, BYU and TCU wanted to get the hell out.

"Now show me on this doll where the mean linebacker touched you."

What fans of other teams are failing to consider is what if their tradition or identity was denied by their conference? How would they react? We are all a little upset about this and we are venting, but we’ll get over it, more and moore with every gray, orange, white uniformed victory!

Nope.

The decision was made by University presidents. When they first wanted to offer us, they first wanted us to get rid of the blue turf. There was a firm “NO” by Gene and Bob and then the discussion went to no all blue uni’s.

You don’t invite someone to your conference “on condition.” And you can bet the other President’s weren’t thinking about Boise State when the decision was made.

Are we playing Virginia Tech this year? Didn’t we beat them last year? Didnt they lose 2 games and still go to a BCS bowl game, and thy loss? Just wondering cause I thought this was a Bronco Fan Site some guest welcome, but not for sore losers.

I wish we were playing VT again

We could play them at a “neutral field” just like we did last time so it’s fair for everyone.

You know, like in Twin Falls, a 3-hr drive for us and a 35-hr drive for you. That’s fair right? Oh no? Awwww, too bad. We still won.

The key is not the "will to win" - everybody has that. It is the will to prepare to win that is important. ~ Bobby Knight

Great.

Now I officially hate the Mountain West. So many bad words come to mind I almost can’t type. The top 3 bail, we get an N64 Logo, and these richard craniums decide they can tell us when and where we can wear our all blue unis. I hope we paint the conference championship trophy blue when we get it…every year.

Bummed.

This RAEG makes no sense to me as an outsider, but it’s never fun to have rules like this chucked your way – especially when it strikes at a school’s proud tradition.

That said, from a competitive standpoint, a year of this might be enough to silence critics. If Boise wins its games at home in something other than all blues, then the argument for the all blues giving a competitive advantage is seriously weakened. If, on the other hand, Boise loses on the smurf, I bet this rule will get entrenched. I seriously doubt that y’all want to gain a true competitive advantage (more than mere motivation) by turf and uniform colors. A year’s experiment will hopefully be enough to resolve the competitive advantage question.

Your mission is clear, if you chose to accept it.

I would suspect that was in the back for the minds of those who made the decision.

The blue-on-blue ban will probably not last into 2012.

I agree for the most part...

But what’s the excuse for these teams when they get curb-stomped at home, too? To me, it doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of difference WHAT Boise wears – and in an era of social media, I have yet to see a player complain about the Blue. It’s always been coaches.

However…you’re right. A year of stomping our opponents in non-blue unis would probably silence the critics.

Thanks to Ohio State's president, I will never root for a Big Ten football program again (except in extenuating circumstances that aid my primary rooting interest).

More rules to follow...

Home schools will only be allowed to sell as many tickets as the visiting team purchases, this mitigates home field advantage. Fast players will be required to wear cleats with sand, this mitigates speed advantage. Big players must be at equal height when making contact with other players, and if there is a significant weight difference the larger player must hop on one leg. Additionally, Kellen Moore will be required to hand the ball to opposing defenders at least twice a game to compensate for throwing picks as often as the MWC makes a good decision…almost never (case in point, new logo). It has also been noted that scores will not be kept and everyone will receive a trophy at the end of the season stating “Most Improved”.

I think this brings up an interesting point.

Do you think that wearing blue on the blue really makes a competitive difference?

If so, then all these complainers have had a legitimate beef, just like making people wear cleats with sand or spotting somebody turnovers.

I thought the point was that wearing blue on blue doesn’t make a difference, so the rule spits at a tradition without making the game more fair. Is that wrong?

by first and thom on Jul 27, 2011 8:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Nope...

Wearing blue ON the blue doesn’t make a competitive difference. Dressing the crowd in the lower decks in matching colors to the uniform might, however – but every school does that, so it’s OK.

The blue field also doesn’t cause disorientation or depth perception issues. If it did, then Northern Illinois wouldn’t have trashed Fresno State at the H-Bowl last year, seeing as how NIU has NEVER played on the blue and Fresno is there at least once every other year (more if they go to the H-bowl as they’ve done two of the last four years), and Cincy, Clemson, Boston College, and Miami (FL) wouldn’t have won bowl games against WAC teams there.

Thanks to Ohio State's president, I will never root for a Big Ten football program again (except in extenuating circumstances that aid my primary rooting interest).

Will we see the MWC's true colors in 2012?

Hawaii will be joining the MWC in 2012. Do you think that their acceptance into the conference has a “condition” that they can’t wear all green at their home game? Or, will we find out that BSU is being targeted?

Any human from the MWC office with a normal amount of common sense....

would be a lot more worried about this ….http://www.deseretnews.com/article/700078281/BYU-football-Craig-Thompson-letter-says-replay-officials-in-BYU-SDSU-game-werent-sufficiently.html rather than the color of BSU’s uniforms. One of the most obvious problems in D1 college football (the replay booth) is being ignored while talk about tattoo parlors and uniform colors seem to be “hot topics”. UNEREAL

Can't we have Air Force.

Get rid of the tripple option because according to Ben it gives them an advantage. Teams have to spend extra time learning to defend it. Unfair!! (Throws oneself on the floor kicking and screaming).
