THE GAME: The Boise State men’s basketball team will play its second of three games in a span of five days, playing host to long-time in-state rival from the Big Sky, Idaho State, Monday (Dec. 5). Tip-off between the Broncos (6-1) and Bengals (2-5) is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Taco Bell Arena.
RADIO INFORMATION: Boise State’s game against Idaho State will be broadcast live on the Bronco Sports Network, with KBOI 670 AM serving as the flagship station. The broadcast will also be streamed live at BroncoSports.com.
Play-by-Play: Bob Behler and Analyst: Abe Jackson
THE SERIES: The Broncos and Bengals have met previously 91 times, more than any other opponent in Boise State history. The Broncos lead the all-time series by a margin of 50-41, and have won each of the last four meetings. Since leaving the Big Sky following the 1995-96 season, the Broncos are 12-3 against the Bengals.
HOLDING COURT: The Broncos’ six-straight home victories to start the 2011-12 season are the most since also winning the first six in 2008-09. A victory over Idaho State would give Boise State seven-straight home victories to start a season for the first time since 2007-08.
A GOOD START: The Broncos are looking for a seventh win in their first eight games, the best start to a season since Boise State won eight of its first nine in 2003-04.
After a solid victory against Indiana State, Boise State again prepares to defend their home floor. There isn't any reason at this point to see why they shouldn't be able to come way with a win tonight however they'll be working for it. Idaho State is currently sitting towards the back of BigSkyBball.com's power rankings and were picked dead last in the conference preseason polls. Of course we were picked last too and look what we'v been able to do pre-conference play. Idaho State overall may be a small team but they have a couple 6-8 guys to match up with ours as well as 7-4 Red Shirt Junior Polish Center, Jakub Kusmieruk. Jakub is a UCF transfer, should we be worried? Hard to say... He's a 60% shooter but only collects 3.8 boards a game, that seems a little low for a guy his height averaging 16 minutes of play a game. The fact he isn't playing more also makes me think he isn't going to dominate the Broncos on his own. Still, he looks pretty scary.. Besides Jakub, Boise State should match up well personnel-wise. Idaho State comes into this match with a moral victory in their season opener verse Oklahoma, taking the sooners down to the wire. OU didn't bust that open until there was ten minutes left in the second and even then Idaho State fought back to leave Norman losing 78-74. For this reason I'm glad to know what our young Broncos are like when in big leads like Drake, they keep fighting. Idaho State has the confidence that they can scratch their way back into a game so we should be aware of that.
The Broncos come into this will some great game experience, especially at home. Hopefully Taco Bell will be as loud and packed as it was the other night vs. Indiana State. It should be just as good of a game. Boise State earned a big bump up to #136 in the RPI rankings according to StatSheet.com. Interesting note: BSU currently has a SOS ranked #309 out of 344. That SOS ranking is projected to increase to #78 by the end of the year. A strong showing in conference play could really bump Boise State up in the RPI rankings.
Things I'd Like to See at the Game Tonight:
- A Bronco W, covering the 18.5 spread
- Butts in the seats (At least 4300 of them)
- Idaho State free throws kind of like this, but with the opposite outcome
- Great under the basket play from Watkins and Buckner
Reasons We Should Cheer Against Idaho State:
1) Because they beat our women, do you want to let these woman-beaters get away with beating your women?
2) Because apparently this was a pretty heated rivalry in the 90's
3) Because StatSmack has the data that empirically shows that Boise State is better than Idaho State.
4) Because not only does Black and Orange look really close to Black and Gold but in the 1920's Idaho State was named the University of Idaho -Southern Branch. I don't know about you but when ever the dUI encroaches on Southern Idaho I get ticked! I'm looking at you Idaho Water Center on Broadway and Front.
Should be another great game tonight with an in state rival. Every game I see more and more in the young kids and come away wondering what we're capable of, come on out and support these guys defending the Bell and an impressive home record! Confidence at home will go a long way when UNLV and SDSU come to town.
I'll be trying to post to this throughout the game and hope other nuggies that can will do the same. Video from the games is hard to come by so if you get good video or pics let me know. If you post a vid to youtube I'd be happy to include it in postgame thoughts.
