It just seems to be pointless to even pay heed to the BCS rankings when the BCS is just using them as "guidelines" rather than as they should be used. I remember when they created the BCS system and the ranking structures and when they first did it, the BCS rankings were sold as being the end all of fairness in rating the best teams. It was supposed to be a method to not only sort out the top 2 teams, but place the other teams in a rank order using polls and computer formulas and that all teams in the BCS would abide by those rankings. In my opinion, they made several mistakes. First, they let the "big" conferences keep the tie-ins to the exlusive bowls that had the best payouts. Second, they created a caste sysytem on AQ vs. non-AQ teams designed to give the AQ teams a non-competitive advantage in bowl games and rankings. Third, they didn't follow through on their own promises of fairness on the ranking system they created and forth and most important; the non-AQ conferences, schools, teans and fans were complacent enough to let them get away with this sham since 1998.
