All of them!

Though I still have yet to see video of Lawrence. The last post that included video of him wouldn’t pull up for me…

Elliott Hoyte

Also excited about him, though again, no great videos. The coaches were saying he is one of the best DE prospects they have seen in 10 years.

also excited about hoyte

But I heard that quote wasn’t quite accurate – anyway the coaches wanted to keep it under wraps, so there’s gotta be something to the kid!

Hoyte has the size to see game time right away.

I’m exited to see Hoyte challenge more veteran DEs and curious to see if Demarcus can sew up a starting spot come game 1.

Demas

I have never seen that many safeties and corners have a 20 yard head start and the angle on an RB headed their way…and whiff. Reminds me of the old movies of Marcus Dupree in High School…but Devan is just Darren Sproles size…and like him, very, very fast.

by HSridge on Dec 30, 2011 8:35 AM PST reply actions

Fields

Doug Martin like!!! a good stiff arm skill comes in handy :)

by HSridge on Dec 30, 2011 8:38 AM PST reply actions

My Top 10 based on watching film and projecting immediate, then potential, impact.

If the recruit does not have film or I have not seen it, they do not make this list however studly they may be.

10. Donte Deayon
9. Shane Rhodes
8. Devan Demas
7. Ben Weaver
6. Chaz Anderson
5. Chancellor James
4. Chris Santini
3. Demarcus Lawrence
2. Jack Fields
1. Nick Patti

Honorable Mention: Everyone else because you could make a 10 second argument why x should be on the list instead of recruit y, and I would probably flake and change my mind on the spot.

He was all over the field this year (offense and defense) before he got hurt. I think he will be out there on opening day laying the smack down on Sparty.

What is the Boise State recruiting class ranked?

Not trolling, just genuinely interested. TCU is at 21 on ESPN.com and I was wondering how Boise State’s stacks up.

If you win a Rose Bowl you are allowed to live in the past.

by Horny-toad on Dec 30, 2011 10:54 AM PST reply actions

BSU's

recruiting class isn’t ranked. The reason for that is that there are no perceived 4-5 star recruits for Boise State but as has been shown time and time again ranking doesn’t mean jack. The Texas Longhorns are always in the top 10 for rankings yet last year they went 5-7 and this year were a 5 loss team this year. Recruiting in Boise is very different. I see exactly what coach Peterson and Co did this season. They grabbed a bunch of recruits that are just shy of 4 star and will easily turn them into 4-5 star players within the next season or two. The star ranking matters much more to the Big Boys than it does to Boise State. Would you believe that Kellen Moore barely qualified as a 2 star recruit and Doug Martin was listed as a one star? Bottom line recruiting doesn’t mean much when you have a coaching staff who knows how to get players to play at their fullest potential and beyond AND DOES NOT HAVE TO CATER TO THE 4-5 Star player ego.

by Jesterrace on Dec 30, 2011 11:18 AM PST up reply actions

Rivals gave Moore two stars, but Scout.com gave him four

http://www.tri-cityherald.com/2011/12/02/1739714/bulk-of-petersens-initial-group.html

It’s true that the organizations like Rivals and Scout will assign stars based on how much interest big programs have in a player, but it’s also true that guys with more stars tend to get drafted by NFL and I think it is almost self-evident that Boise State’s teams have been getting better as their recruiting class rankings have improved over the past 15 years.

I don't believe in dibs, or love at first sight, or love, or best friends, or doing things.

by marktgarten on Dec 30, 2011 1:41 PM PST up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, I agree and think this is an area we need to nail down as a fanbase so we aren't misrepresenting our thoughts on the matter.

Stars do mean something and should not be dismissed out of hand. They represent displays of raw physical potential. Since it’s a “display” then if they weren’t looked at closely, they aren’t very accurately rated a lot of the time.

This is why attention from strong programs lead to higher stars…the recruiting services begin looking closer, trying to see what the coaches have obviously found.

When it comes to on field production however, this raw physical potential must be honed. Talent development is where a program gets to shine. The coaching, practices, weight lifting and nutrition philosophies, direct personal encouragement, atmosphere and team culture that promotes excellence, as well as the individual’s will to exceed all play a major part in the final product we see on the field.

Where a team like Texas or Florida St. may bring in hoards of elite level athletes, they are sorely lacking in the efficiency of the program to develop that talent. Conversely, where Boise St. has never recruited a 5 star athlete, we excel at A) finding under the radar talent and B) squeezing every bit of efficiency possible out of our training methods and coupling that with a far superior culture of excellence as compared to the average Div IA football program.

Boise St.’s team building philosophies, general camaraderie, and talent development dwarf that of far more advantaged programs like Penn St., Arizona St., Florida St., Miami, UCLA, Cal, Oregon St., Iowa, Indiana, South Carolina, Nebraska, or Ole Miss. You can see it in how the players perform, stick together, talk about the team and each other, execute their roles within the play called, and behave when the chips are down.

You make excellent points, pj. rec'd.

And isn’t it interesting that the culture you describe is based on the heart, soul, talent, and ambition of our coaches, who aren’t paid even remotely similarly to those 5 star coaches of 5 star athletes.

The Defensive prospects in general are the most exciting for me.

I’m excited to see if Santini and Weaver can be the linebacker tandem that ends the run game on the second level. I feel like we just haven’t had a great set of LB’s since Korey Hall and Colt Brooks. I felt like our dominance stopping the run was a result of that ungodly D-Line. Maybe it’s because we left the 4-3 for a 4-2-5, I’m not sure. But it’d be nice to see those two bruise some RB’s.
I’m also excited to have a safety named Chanceller, and a new CB is definitely welcome.
However, I’m most excited to see how Demarcus Lawrence steps in. I’m expecting a lot of production out of him next year. I think we are counting on him big time and he has to deliver.

we still have a couple of years to get more recruits. Matt Miller still has 3 more years and Moore and GB still have another couple. There is still time to get other guys

by Jesterrace on Dec 30, 2011 11:22 AM PST up reply actions

Speaking of which I can't believe we pulled off

Getting Matt Miller, I took a look at who was after him:

Arkansas
Arizona State
Stanford
Oregon State
Washington State

Good thing we were the closest option to home for him. I could easily have seen him wearing a Razorback or Cardinal uniform.

by Jesterrace on Dec 30, 2011 11:26 AM PST up reply actions

In this instance..

I’d call it the Kellen Hangover Effect. No Kellen to get you the ball, I’m not surprised they went elsewhere. Boise is unproven now at QB, so a lot of these prospects don’t want to go somewhere when the QB is an unknown. Wait till we get solidified at QB, and you’ll see a lot more WR’s signing up. And as Jesterrence mentioned, there’s a lot of good WR’s in the stable who will get better with time (Troy Ware, Boldewejn, Burks) and guys who have already been proven like Miller, Moore, and the Burroughs brothers. I’d say we’re pretty good for now.

by Phil Hines on Dec 30, 2011 11:36 AM PST up reply actions

I agree with you about our LBs

But I think Santini will play our LB/Safety/ Nickel DB. The coaches should name it the Winston LB position. He was a S in High School and practiced as a S at a Nike invitational winning Defensive MVP if memory serves.

Mystery Solved

As an old fogy, I was confused by the “ATH” designation before D.J. Dean’s name. I thought I knew most of the position acronyms, even though, in my day, we had no fancy backs, simply players such as quarterback, halfback, and fullback.

I also thought that, as a retired member of the most heavily invested acronym organization (HIAO) in the world (the USN), I could figure it out. But I had no luck, so I turned to this newfangled substitute for the Encyclopedia Brittanica, a.k.a. The Internet. Thanks be to WikiAnswers, for I found this definition:

ATH stands for athlete. This designation is given to high school football recruits by colleges when a position has not yet been assigned because their skills could put them in a number of different positions depending on team needs.

So, all the rest of you football-terminology nerds can be thankful that one of us dared to profess ignorance. What do I care? Chicks ignore me, anyway.

by SeniorChief on Dec 30, 2011 3:00 PM PST reply actions

so a "fancy back"...that would be FB? Mr. Paul a fancy back? SC, you might want to rethink that acronym.:)

So, ATH isn’t a lisper talking about CJ?

and SBNation isn’t …….
and RUTS isn’t the fall elk hunt?
and SOS isn’t the SEC Same Old S***

Now my world is in turmoil, nttmad

Chief, you crack me up.

"the halfback (half because there were 2)."

Where did you get that? With that line of reasoning, there should be four quarterbacks. Maybe that’s how we can simultaneously use all our QBs this year. ;-)

I think it has more to do with the position of the back relative to the offensive line.

by Dothework on Dec 30, 2011 3:53 PM PST reply actions

I'm with you. This incoming group of starters are going to be the ones will either

cement the reputation and transition us in the national consciousness from burgeoning program to powerhouse or allow the program to recede back into the foggy area of questions and uncertainty.

The team that beat OU announced our presence with a thunderclap. The 50 win squad took us from Cinderella, to Giant Killers, to National Championship Game Darkhorses. But, as far as the nation as a whole is concerned, there is plenty of reason to wonder if we are for real, lucky, or master deceivers with high media prestige and low risk scheduling.

We all know the story; those who take an honest look know who we are, those who wish they could dismiss us dig and grasp for whatever excuses they can find to ease their troubled minds and reassure their assumptions that their team has not slipped down on the Totem Pole.

Life after Kellen, Austin, Doug, Titus, Billy, Winston, Jeron, Shea, and George will either leave the door of accusation open or slam the case shut once and for all. Those guys did all the grunt work to get us in position for the main event. Guys like Patti, Miller, Horn, Hightower, Gavins, Ajayi, Taylor, Fields, Renaud, and Lawrence will have to seize the initiative and finish the fight.

Three generations of players, one epic storyline.

So does anybody know anything about RB Jamaal Williams...

…he’s supposedly a BYU commit, but 24/7 Sports has him listed as both a BYU and Boise commit (which obviously doesn’t work). But the date he committed to BYU is July, and the date they have for him committing to Boise is November 1st…so I’m confused??

by Future_Demagogue on Jan 1, 2012 5:10 PM PST reply actions

I hope he's still BYU's

The kid talked to the press and compared his visits to Boise and Provo and said he felt like BSU was like a little camp and BYU was a big time program. He also said BSU was to much about the cool unis/gear. Ultimately people were really nice to him at BYU (their rb corp sucks so why wouldn’t they do everything they can to butter this kid up?) and at BSU he had to “go up to people to get them to talk to him.”
