Hatemay's Game Thoughts- New Mexico Edition
Yep. It seemed like a mere formality Saturday night as Boise State's senior class went out with a bang against the University of New Mexico. Join me after the jump as I break down my game thoughts.
Running backs- Doug Martin gave the home town crowd what they came to see. Martin got most of the carries and ran for 110 yards while breaking a long run for 40 yards. Martin was bottled up fairly well for most of the game by the UNM defense, but Martin did create some running room with his hard nose style running. Both Harper and Wright gave good time for their carries.
Wide Receivers- I know we won by a wide margin, but we had too many drops. We had three drops and one of them was for a touchdown, which was beautifully thrown. One thing I did like was the yards after catch. We had many times where the receivers caught the passes in the soft part of the zone, and got up field in a hurry. I do like what we saw out of Aaron Burks in mop up duty. It was good to see Geraldo Boldewijn make an impact in a game.
Offensive line- We had a pretty good game. I wish we could open more holes for the running game, but part of that is the lack of Dan Paul.
Defensive line- We got good pressure throughout the night. We mixed our looks up quite a bit. It was good to see other bodies in later in the game. Mike Atkinson, Ricky Tjong A Tjoe made good plays.
Line Backers- Byron Hout was all over the field. Played very well. Cory Bell and Dextrell Simmons getting good looks at nickel. Hopefully Tommy Smith wasn't banged up too bad, because he is needed on both sides of the ball. We had solid play from the Line backers all night.
Secondary- Continues to be a work in progress. Cedric Febis making tackles all over the field. Iloka got beat down the sideline early in the game. I think Lee Hightower is getting accustomed to the speed of the game. Lets hope we can get some gel time with our secondary for our bowl game. Because whoever we play for the bowl game will have the ability to air it out... and they will.... its a bowl game, no need to hold back.
Special teams- Make a damn field goal. Kick coverage is great. Blake Renaud was not in pads but we had good play from the rest of the usual suspects. Our punt return team opened up good holes for Burroughs and Chris Potter. Both have great vision for the field in that role.
