Final pregame thoughts: The future of Boise State's depth chart
Boise State and New Mexico play Saturday (4:00 p.m. MT, The Mtn) in what will be the final home game for 21 BSU seniors. Bronco Stadium will be a buzzsaw of emotion. Fans will be verklempt. Someone will upload the whole thing to YouTube and set it to the tune of "Bittersweet Symphony" by Verb Pipe. It will be sad, strange times.
One reason for all the emotion is that Bronco Nation can hardly imagine what life will be like without a group of players that fans have grown to know and love. So to prepare you for the future, I put together a proposed Bronco depth chart, sans seniors. Check it out after the jump, and add your thoughts and feelings in the comments.

The good news ...
- Four of the five Boise State lineman will be returning starters. I lumped Cory Yriarte and Jake Broyles into this group since both guys started several games this year. Broyles suffered a season-ending injury early on, and Yriarte subbed for Thomas Byrd for the better half of the season.
- The skill positions aren't as bad as you think. Assuming quarterback is not a skill, that is.
- Boise State will have two of the best corners in the West.
The bad news ...
- Those two corners are the only defensive starters to return. Technically, Jonathan Brown, J.C. Percy, and Tommy Smith have been co-starters at their respective positions all season, but the majority of the starts went to Hunter White, Aaron Tevis, and Byron Hout - all of whom will be gonzo.
- Quarterback derby.
- Open tryouts at defensive end. Bring your cleats and a permission slip.
Your turn
What do you think about Boise State's future depth chart? What positions give you the greatest hope? What positions give you the greatest ulcers? Share your thoughts in the comments.

Is it just me?
Or does it seem like Trevor Harmon has been at Boise State for 10 years? Also, I think our secondary is going to be pretty good, our d-line might be questionable though. I also think we will be pretty effective at running the ball with Harper and several guys off the O-line returning. I am not opposed to the Kellen Moore plastic surgery route, just completely redo his face, change his name, and use him for the next four years, because I am not looking forward to Southwick leading this team.
You are thinking of Brad Elkin
and I have it on good authority that Elkin still has 3 years of eligiblity left.

That is not DJ Harper in the photo, it's Malcolm Johnson.
I’m not worried. I remember how it was when welcomed the outgoing class. We all had the same nervous cold sweats we’ll have this off season.

Not really...
Moore to Southwick is pretty frightening. Much more frigtening than defensive back or wide receiver concerns we had last year…..

Riddle: As Moore may pass to 1 of 11 different receivers in a game
He might pass off to a QB that sounds like he’s from the North Pole. Christmas maybe year around next year.
I 2nd that motion.
And motion to put him in atop as the head kicker.
I would feel a little more encouraged if..
Jeremy Ione did anything this year. I had big hopes for him this year and it didnt really work out for the kid. Hopefully he shows up in the Spring ready to grab a starting spot.
Just hard to fathom the drop in QB, RB, and DLINE…..

But he's behind 2 seniors. He'll come along.
Jeron Johnson once told me that Ioane will be “ridiculous” once he’s got the defense down to the point he’s playing at game speed. The only problem I saw with him in the Georgia game was that he was playing tentative. I think Hightower and Ioane are your starting safeties next year.
by Drew Roberts on Dec 2, 2011 1:05 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
agreed...
Ioane should come along fine. He is only a RS Freshman and he is talented enough to earn the coaches’ trust to start the Georgia game. With some gained experience, I think he and Hightower are going to be a great tandem in the defensive backfield.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Let's make one thing perfectly clear ...
I have every confidence in the players and coaches that are returning next year … The Boise State University football program will do what they have done over the past several years …
RELOAD!!!!!!
These kids will step up and do fine!

I'm not so worried about the D-Line.
The tackles have played plenty in the rotation. Might not by Winn & Baker, but they should hold up fine. I’m OK with the guys at LB also (becoming a strength, perhaps?). Ioane has clearly not fulfilled the coaches’ & fans’ expectations. Hopefully that turns around this offseason.
I don’t know what (or who) we’ll get at QB, but I think Southwick has shown improvement in the fewer garbage time snaps he’s received this season. Whoever it is, while a downgrade from Kellen, should do fine with the solid O-line, WRs, and RBs we’ll have.

I'm not terribly worried about Southwick either...
With vanilla play calling he’s managed to go 15/19 for 126 yds. That’s 78.9% completion percentage and 6.6 yds Y/A. Not too bad. I think with another offseason to work and get more comfortable with the #1’s, and a more wide open playbook he’ll (hopefully) be just fine. Especially with the experience at OL, RB and most of the WR’s coming back.
by Future_Demagogue on Dec 2, 2011 11:28 AM PST up reply actions
We aren't even sure if Southwick will be the guy...
But agree about that the rest of the offense will be good. If Baby Burroughs and Boldewijn learn to catch the ball on a regular basis, the WR are really scary.

I think the 1st team DL will be really good next year
Horn should be decent, TAT could have a huge year and Bacon is an anchor for the middle and he probably gives us the ability to play a lot of 3 man fronts, which might help since overall the DL is a little thin past the top 3. But I’m guessing someone else will step up to play well and give us a solid 4th DL. Worthy looked like a good one out of HS to me.
With all of the big name players coming back on offense...
I think that who ever wins the starting QB job is going to do good.
Remember that time we had the best D-End tandum?
and how our D-Line was outrageously outstanding and yet our sacks went way down this year?
What kind of pressure are we going to bring next year? Heavy blitzes and rely on our strong corners?
My Thoughts
This spring we’ll see the most diverse, talented and prepared (Southwick, Hedrick, Laughrea) group of untested quarterbacks to ever begin a new season for Boise State. People who have seen him play say Patti is a speedier Doug Flutie (undersized, big arm and a chip on his shoulder). One of these four will emerge as the starter because he handles the pressure and will be driven by the competition.
I’ll suggest that Leno will move from right to left tackle. I’ll go with Renaud at middle linebacker and Samuel Ukwuachu will challenge for a starting DE/OLB hybrid. Donte Deayon of Rialto Summit HS will emerge as the true freshman phenom (I have seen him play and he has Orlando Scandrick-like skills).
DE will be interesting...I'm definitely excited
They’re pretty young…but also big (4 of them are already bigger than McClellin)…hopefully they learn quick!!
Nick Alexander 6’4" 243 lbs
Rory Connop 6’4" 265 lbs
Tyler Horn 6’4" 256
Justin Jungblut 6’4" 269
Robert Ash 6’3" 262
Sam Ukwuachu 6’5" 210
Kharyee Marshall 6’1" 216
by Future_Demagogue on Dec 2, 2011 12:16 PM PST up reply actions
Horn will be one starter at DE..but it's murky after that
I think that Marshall will probably be the other #1 and will be a late bloomer like Root was. Alexander and Ukwuachu are my tentative picks to round out the 2nd wave.
I believe that Ash and Jungblut are DTs…but you never know where they’ll end up.
You're probably right...
I was just using what they were recruited as according to Scout.com.
by Future_Demagogue on Dec 2, 2011 1:33 PM PST up reply actions
Considering Marshall's size/speed, do you thinnk he would be better at outside linebacker?
He seems unable to put on the weight needed for the DE position.
"Boise State football is now a Fargo winter. You know what's coming, and that information does you no good whatsoever". Matt James / The Fresno Bee
WR's will have a more difficult job
Without Kellen back there preparing their school lunches and putting the ball in between the numbers on their jersey, the WR’s are going to need to step up, get some crazy glue on their gloves and make plays happen.
It’ll definitely be an interesting year…Hopefully our new safties tooks notes, lots of notes from our departing seniors about how to coach the backfield.
It’s going to be interesting seeing a more mobile QB for the Broncos… as long as they’re not a Zabransky-esque in their decision making. I wonder what it’d be like if we had a dual threat QB with the accuracy of KM, the physical size of $cam Newton and the speed of… well, someone that’s decently fast w/out making them godlike. Is that too much to ask for?
I believe...
If Nick Patti becomes the starter, they’ll have a fabulous year. Especially with his scrambling ability. Geraldo’s size and speed. I think he’ll be the most to benefit from Nick. Look for him to improve. I heard he has a big chip on his shoulder and should be much improved come next year.

To me, GB needs to take a huge step next year.
I hope he becomes Matt Miller’s best friend between now and the start of next season. I think it’s a mind set (catching the ball cleanly), and he has to get his mind right.

Do you think 8 months is enough time to learn coach Pete's Offense?
I would love to have another freshman in QB and know that we would be set for the next 4 years, but from what I hear both Southwick and Hedrick didn’t fully understand the bronco offense throughout their freshman years.

On another thread, I posted a zinger directed at Southwick. I regret it.
Every time the camera pans to the sidelines, Southwick is there with a smile and encouraging word for the guys coming off the field. He has a headset on and he is into it. And obvously, he is a patient guy. It would be hell to follow Kellen Moore and the tremendous expectations (or lack thereof).
So, that was out of line for me to zing him. I hope he has a terrific year, but he will also have terrific competition for the starting qb spot.

I believe...
Nick or Jimmy will get the starting position at QB. Loane with fulfill our expectations and UK will emerge as a surprising DE. Gavin’s and Taylor really got me believing that our secondary is going to be solid. Our true worry is at QB. No experience there. But looking at the roster. We should at least win the conference. Bold Statement? No. Just confident.

We should at least win the conference
The MWC sans TCU or the Big East sans WV shouldnt be too hard to win. I agree with everything you say. We have to temper our expectations at the QB spot and hope that the rest of the talent around the QB and the coaches get us there. Spring ball will defintley be interesting this year…..

Bold pick choosing Jimmy Laughrea or Patti over Hedrick or Southwick
If you’d have asked me in Fall Camp who I though the 2012 QB would be I’d have said Hedrick…but Southwick always gets the lion’s share of the mop-up snaps. Patti is probably the most exciting when you look at his skillset…but I’m hard-pressed to see him start over someone who knows the offense backward and forward. Of course, he is graduating early to join the team for Spring ball, so if he’s a quick study, all bets are off.
I would have picked Hedrick too...
..but I wonder how much this injury has set him back. Due to the complexity of the offense, Southwick has a pretty big head start.
"It's hardly a groundbreaking thought, but defeat is when you know you're a fan. It's easy to clap and cheer when a team wins, but when they lose, that's when you know if you care or not." - Craig Robinson
The Spring and the Summer is a long to catch up,
Patti is the wildcard here. I don’t think Southwick has one anything to lock up the posisition this year and don’t know how big of a jump he has on Hedrick at this point. Hedrick has actually played meanigful snaps (albeit in wildcat ‘trick plays’) this season so the coaching staff must trust him to a certain extent.
Should be interesting to see how it plays out.

what will be interesting to see is a QB with wheels
and although it won’t completely counter the tremendous talent of Moore it will bring an edge to the offense that opposing teams haven’t had to deal with in four years.
"We do not take counsel of our fears, our naysayers, or the unknown" Coach Pete 1-1-07
Im not sure
where you get the notion a redshirt in Laughrea will surpass two others qb’s for the job, or the notion that a high school senior will come in january, learn the system the way he needs to and get the starting position come fall. That is way out there. Patti is good. Kellen was great, and even Kellen red shirted behind Taylor Tharpe. Look for it to be dead even between Hedrick and Southwick with Patti Red shirting and Laughrea being a career back up……
I agree with you
other than the fact that Patti has no shot. Im not thrilled with what I see with Hedrick or Southwick so far and if Patti looks better than them why not go with the kid. The one thing that Patti has going for him, is that he emulates Moore the most in his style of play and that might give him a leg up on the competition.
I still think Hedrick will win a closely contested 3 way battle with Laughrea only on the blue four years from now, on his senior day.

Wright?
Anyone seen Drew Wright run this year? I have to assume with all his knowledge of the system he will be the #2 and Ajai will be right behind him. Johnson still needs to prove he can pass his classes. He was the #4 guy behind Wright in Fall camp until Wright suffered a high ankle sprain which he has been playing with all year. I can’t see how Johnson has any shot at #2. And if all 4 are healthy I see no reason to not redshirt Fields. We need to keep a healthy stable of backs coming through for the next few years if we will be playing with inexperienced QB’s.
Malcolm was #3 going into the final weeks of fall
According to running backs coach Keith Bhonapha, Johnson has gone from non-roster person like you and me to third-string running back very much unlike you and me in the span of two weeks. No job is safe blah-blah-blah, but man, what a comeback for Johnson. The depth chart at running back currently looks like this:
1) Doug Martin
2) D.J. Harper
3) Malcolm Johnson
4) Drew Wright
5) Jay Ajayi
I'm pretty sure that's not what it currently looks like
unless Johnson can run amazingly well on crutches.

Indeed, bingo Drew is right, the Verve Pipe gave us “The Freshman”…
When Kevan was young he knew everything…Drew a punk that rarely never took advice. But Kevan can’t be held responsible, because Drew was touchin’ his face…
For the life of me, I cannot remember, what made us think that we were wise and we’d never compromise. For the life of me, I cannot believe we’d ever die for these sins, we were merely freshmen.
KyleWilson01 can remember when Kellen was merely a freshmen…ahh…the memories.
I think “The Freshman” may just solidify that Nick Patti will be the next BSU QB!
by KyleWilson01 on Dec 2, 2011 11:55 PM PST up reply actions
It's Possible
I may have gotten a bit carried away, maybe you were touching his face and your face? It’s all so complex viewed through the lens of teen love and angst
Bama Hawkeye over at Off-Tackle Empire did a study a year or two ago where he determined that returning starters on O-line and D-line is in general the best way to determine how successful a team could look to be the next year- caveats abound (losing a heisman candidate is a big one), but it’s a good piece. Having four returning starters on the O-line will be a tremendous benefit to whoever ends up quarterbacking the broncos next year, but all of the names on the D-line in italics have to give one pause. Boise had better hope Ronnie Hillman goes pro this year.
http://www.frogsowar.com/
Offensive line worries me
With the progression of CFB, QBs are getting taller which means O lines are getting taller as well. Tackles at 6’7 – 6’8 Gaurds at 6’3 – 6’4 290-320. Having a shorter QB such a Patti will mean a short OL which means undersized guys which means no dominance in the run game. Our running game struggled this year with straight power up the middle. Dominance starts at the OL.
A different perspective...
The running game suffered because we didn’t have a fullback. Not one. (sheesh… How do we not have ANY)
Passblocking was excellent… So with Dan back the running game should be back as well.
Except with the Surgeon (can he make me a sammich before he goes?) gone to the League, people might not be dropping 5 and 6 into coverage… Ahhh…. The game within the game within the….
This is so true
But even with the threat of the surgeon, defences could still play our running game straight up. Pass protection was the best, due to good athletics on the O line but I still think we lack in size.
Metaphor city: The pocket will move quickly to a Ranch style neighborhood.
Passes delivered from various zip codes in the backfield with a view. Old growth foliage will be clear cut for unobstructed scenery. A quick play action moves branches to the wood chopper. The Bronco Landscaping Company will make it fit for big dog driver to eat up prime smurf turf. The game of football follows physics carefully as for every defensive action there is an offsetting offense action. The BCS finds BSU very offensive In fact tall defensive line men open up new opportunities for the offensive. Moving to a new offensive neighborhood can make it a beautiful place.
The only thing the BCS has to fear is fear itself and Blue is the color of fear.
man, that must be good stuff.

Interested to see what hes been doing for the past 2 years. Think he is gonna be a good player
I love this post
I was thinking just yesterday I’d love to go through the depth chart and see how we look for next year and BOOM (madden ref.) there it is the next day.
My two cents…Having D.J. back is awesome! then Ajayi and Fields coming in, as well as Johnson getting healthy. Great battle at the running back position. I’m rooting for Nick Patti…I live on the east coast, and I’ve got friends here in ACC country that rave about this kid. I heard about him from them before I saw him on obnug. Major upside. The post Kellen era although scary and sad to enter, I believe will be exciting. As Tebow says, GB2, God bless and Go Broncos!
A season without Kellen Moore
sounds scary, and I agree with Petersen’s comments in the Statesman today that Moore is probably “the best pocket passer he’s ever seen in college football,” but when I think about it, I can’t name another college program build around a pocket-passer quarterback.
The teams that have given Boise fits are the ones who have running players at quarterback – guys who run draws, options and option-reads, and who can scramble. That’s maybe a third of most college teams’ offenses, and BSU has not had any of that for four years.
Teams in the next few years have every chance of being the best ever. The recruits are higher-ranked and increasingly custom-picked, they’ve had more chance to gray shirt and red shirt, they’re coming up under a more stable and experienced coaching staff with better facilities and a stronger tradition.
Dynasty, baby. It’s only just begun.
Oh, and thanks
for posting the depth chart. Can’t tell you how much more confident it makes me feel.
and one more thing
I can’t believe the depth in this chart. There are a dozen examples, but just look at one – Corey Bell. He’s listed third at safety. This guy would be listed as a headline recruit five years ago. He was first-team all-state, SIC Conference player of the year – this is the kind of player that BSU always lost to Washington State or Arizona five years ago. And he’s slotted third in the depth chart.
The best has just begun.
Good Post
Nice to see at least a few familiar names will still be around next season. Oh, and I would not want to be the team Kellen plays in his final home game…
