BYU as an independent is better for Boise in long run

Stay connected for news and updates

Would it be great if BYU were to join the Broncos in the Big East as division conference rivals? Yes, it would. Is it better that they probably won't be doing so due to their tight grip on the whole TV rights deal? I think so. Why, you ask? Because as an independent BYU has the opportunity to schedule better schools over the course of the year. This season they scheduled five games against BCS opponents (I'm including TCU). Six if you count UCF, which will be in the Big East probably next year (and began the season ranked in the top 25. Yes I know that the Big East offers the opportunity to play at least eight guaranteed BCS schools in conference, but they would be Big East schools. This season BYU played two Pac12 schools, two Big12 schools, and one SEC school -- plus one Big East school if you again count UCF. Now why is that good for Boise? Because we have that twelve year scheduling agreement. It's almost as if we will be playing a BCS team every year until 2024, on top of the eight Big East that we have to play. And if we continue to schedule good BCS teams and not FCS cupcakes, that will make our SO even stronger.
