Why are the AP rankings used for the first half of the season, but not the BCS?

Each preseason of college football the Associated Press comes with their preseason poll. We beat AP #19 UGA, not BCS #19. The strength of schedule for the first half the season is based on a poll that isn't even used in the BCS computations. why? For example: LSU beat AP #3 Oregon, who is currently BCS #10. They also beat AP #25 Miss State, #16 WVU, and #17 Florida. None of which are currently ranked in the BCS or the AP. But yet LSU's wins over those three schools is part of the "eye test" that has kept them ranked so high in the BCS. By comparison Bama beat three AP ranked schools, and two are still ranked in the BCS. It makes no sense to me.
