Colorado upsets Utah; UCLA wins Pac12 South

The Colorado Buffaloes (2-7, 3-10) upset the Utah Utes 17-14 Friday afternoon to end the Utes' (4-5, 7-5) hopes of a Pac12 South championship. The loss by Utah also means that the UCLA Bruins (5-3, 6-5) have won the Pac12 South and will play the Pac12 North champion in the inaugural Pac12 Championship Game next week. The Bruins' claim to the South Division is set in stone even if they lose their final game of the season versus current Pac12 South leader USC (6-2, 9-2), since the Trojans cannot compete for the conference championship or bowl game due to their NCAA sanctions.

In other news Arizona State (4-5, 6-6) lost at home to the Cal Golden Bears 47-38. But even if the Sun Devils had won, UCLA would still be the division champ due to a tie breaking win over ASU earlier in the season.

This going to be one interesting inaugural Pac12 conference championship. The strange thing is that -- though extremely unlikely, UCLA could very well play in the Rose Bowl; Stanford (8-1, 11-1) could very well still get a BCS bowl if they survive Notre Dame; and Oregon (7-1, 9-2) could be left on the outside looking in. Crazy stuff. Or the Ducks could get upset by Oregon State, in which case Stanford would win the north; and then what happens if The Cardinal chokes against the Bruins? Even more weird.
