Broncos take care of Aztecs 52-35

Boise State came out on fire to open up an early lead while San Diego State did their best in the second half to give Boise State a scare. Ronnie Hillman tried to go for San Diego State but gave way to redshirt freshman Adam Muena who did alright for himself.

Join me below for a game recap and some quick thoughts on this bounce back win.

Star-divide

Quick thoughts

Boise State came out aggressive early and it showed by forcing three quick turnovers...Tyler Shoemaker's three touch downs tie the school record of 14 TD's in a season set by Austin Pettis last year...Doug Martin looked good in his return from an injured ankle...Boise State's secondary has some big holes and hopefully a healthy Jamar Taylor and Ebo Makinde can help fill those by the time a bowl game rolls around...Tyrone Crawford finally gets a sack for Boise State...Matt Miller is not only a great receiver, he's a great blocker...Kellen's punt needs to make his Heisman reel...San Diego State should really try to play their first halves like their second halves...Ronnie HIllman appeared to be way too happy on the sideline when the camera found him...Hunter White might be lose his special teams player of the year award with that face mask...Kellen Moore had a few questionable throws that looked like he was forcing things...Ryan Lindley's beard is awesome...I'm sick of injuries...I'm also sick of garbage time TD's given up this year

garbage time TDs do suck

but outside of that, I’m pretty satisfied. We won, Doug’s back, Kellen is awesome.

I’ll take it.

Thank you, Nick Adenhart. You will always be remembered. #34

I'm not typically a malicious person

But I was kinda happy that Lindley got hurt on that last 2-point try. Really would serve San Diego for trying so frickin’ hard to score one last meaningless TD if he ends up lost for the season.

by hummerofdoom on Nov 19, 2011 9:40 PM PST up reply actions

I'm okay with them going for the TD but

going for a 2-point conversion with the game way out of hand, that pissed me off. Rocky Long is a douche, theirs no point in going for 2 and even less point in going for the onside kick. I was hoping Petersen would call one last deep ball with 4 seconds left just to say BW you.

I need a new sig, ya dig.

Playing for a better bowl game

and looking at the point spread, the only two possible (but very shaky) reasons to go for two there and kick an onside kick, and risk losing a player or two. Niether worked, so that is a bit of in your face to Long.

Just another example of the difference between a Chris Petersen and a low class guy like Long.

by HSridge on Nov 20, 2011 6:54 AM PST up reply actions

Let's be Objective

I’m a big Boise fan, but we need to be fair about these things. We had a very comfortable lead late in the 3rd quarter and rather then kicking a short field goal inside the 10 yeard line on 4 down, we went for the first. Karma bit us in the butt, because we lost the fumble and came away with no points. The San Diego State fans seated by us at the game were saying the same thing about Petersen having low class as we are about Long. It’s all in the eye of the beholder

by bornboiseblue on Nov 20, 2011 10:22 AM PST up reply actions

Petersen absolutely knew SDSU is a 2nd half team

He did not want them to get it back via a blocked FG, etc. Keep the ball on ground, pound it out, do what we can do. Smart football. Now Doug Martin has 2 red zone lost fumbles, against AFA and now SDSU. We have 4 as a team and a takeaway pick in the end zone. That’s 35 poins that would have beaten TCU, and lead to TD’s by AFA and SDSU. We can end that practice this week for sure.

by HSridge on Nov 20, 2011 11:36 PM PST up reply actions

So what you, and the SDSU fans sitting near you, are saying is that Coach Pete was running up the score by not scoring????

1) it was still the 3rd quarter.
2) Going for 1st down has two purposes a) runs time off the clock, and b) doesn’t add 3 meaningless points to the scoreboard and gives the other team a chance to defend the touchdown or force a turnover.

Coach Pete has always done that. It’s the same thing late in the 4th quarter. Coach Pete doesn’t put up meaningless FG’s when he could take more time off the clock. Unfortunately, sometimes the defense sucks and we get an easy 6 instead of 3, though.

For the record, I’m ok with them going for 2 (and an onside kick) with the game decided. They could just be working on technique for a future game when they may need it. And after TCU, I think our defense can use the practice defending 2 pt conversions.

by bbbroncos on Nov 21, 2011 8:00 AM PST up reply actions

Not a better bowl game, just a bowl game

It is a very real possibility SDSU doesn’t go bowling despite being eligible. The MW should have 5 bowl eligible teams but has only 4 tie-ins. The last invite will likely come down to a choice between SDSU and Wyoming.

Hillman laughing it up while his team is losing. Weird. Good job special teams, except for the facemask. I’m still a little fuzzy about that call. Do you think we have a new kicker?

by Denise F. on Nov 19, 2011 8:52 PM PST reply actions

Love to know

what was behind this week’s kicking drama.
Goodale kicked the first 4 PATS and Frisina took over from there 3 PATS and a FG.
Why the sudden change in the 2nd quarter to Frisina after Goodale was 4 for 4?

by dgslc on Nov 19, 2011 8:58 PM PST up reply actions

That looked like the rotation was planned.

Honestly, Frisina looks good in short range.

by BleedBlue75 on Nov 19, 2011 9:47 PM PST up reply actions

Why Not Make a Change

Goodale’s 3rd PAT was low and his 4th barely snuck inside the left upright, why not make a change. Frisina looked solid, his PAT’s and field goal were all right down the middle.

by bornboiseblue on Nov 20, 2011 10:29 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed

Why not see what the other guy can do? We already know that Goodale cannot handle they pressure, so why not see what Frisina can do? He looked great on the PATs and the FG, dead center… Would have been better to see that last week though.

It’s crazy that the only teams who came away from this weekend unscathed are the SEC quadrant of doom (LSU/Bama/Arkansas/Georgia), Virginia Tech, Houston, and us. Stanford may or may not be on this list by the end of the night.

One thing’s for sure, BCS armageddon is upon us.

around this time in 2007, the #1 and 2 teams were West Virginia and Mizzou, two teams not usually that high. For drama and upsets, that was the best college football season, IMHO.

Wasn't it hilarious too see Oregon lost on a missed field goal...

I vote the player of the game as Iowa State, NC State, USC, Baylor, and hopefully Cal. This has been an amazing weekend for Boise State. I hate that we lost, but if we had to pick the perfect time to lose a game, that was it. I think we will move up to 5 or 6 in the polls tomorrow. Go Broncos!!!

On the facemask...

I may be wrong, but doesn’t the ball change possession once a team punts? So why would San Diego State get the ball back? Shouldn’t the penalty just be added to the end of the return?

by BSU Guru on Nov 19, 2011 9:13 PM PST reply actions

Nope...

Because it’s on a 4th down, just like if there was an incomplete pass but a pass interference call. Tacking the penalty onto the end of the run only occurs on actual kickoffs.

Not Quite...

First it was Hunter White.

Second, the reason the ball did not change possession on that kick is that the facemask happened behind their line of scrimmage. If Hunter facemasked on our side of the line, then it would be our ball with the 15 yard penalty marked off.

Third, I didn’t see it – wish I had.

How does this help us out? With TCU’s win today we were eliminated from being eligible for any BCS game.

by VegasBlues on Nov 19, 2011 10:14 PM PST up reply actions

no we weren't

we were eliminated from being automatically qualified. we’re eligible as long as we finish in the top 14 (or 12, I can’t remember). as long as we keep winning and others keep losing like they are, we just might end up in a BCS game

After the automatic berths have been granted, the remaining berths, known as “at-large” berths, are filled from a pool of teams who are ranked in the top 14 and have at least nine wins. The actual teams that are chosen for the at-large berths are determined by the individual bowl committees.

actually, we are not eliminated from anything yet.

if by some miracle tcu loses to unlv i know, 1% chance if hell freezes over then we would be co-champs of the mwc and would still qualify for the non-aq auto bid (assuming we stay above houston).

BCS Bowl

I thought the only way a non-AQ school could go to a BCS game is to win their conference title. No matter how high we finish in the rankings, I don’t think we’ll go to a BSC Bowl game. because we’ll finish second in our conference

by bornboiseblue on Nov 20, 2011 10:52 AM PST up reply actions

as far as i know, that only eliminates us from gaining an automatic bid. we can still get an at large bid if complete chaos ensues…like this weekend. but we could still use some more help…

Okay you two are probably right that we aren’t eliminated. It would take one heck of a scenario for it to work out though.

by VegasBlues on Nov 19, 2011 10:29 PM PST up reply actions

Sorry for the late reply...

But what those guys said. An at large bid is still a very high possibility for us, especially will all these teams around us falling. The too 14 tomorrow is going to be clogged with SEC teams (only 2 can go to a BCS game), us, and most likely a handful of 2 loss teams (aside from Stanford and Okie Lite). The odds in our favor seem quite high from my perspective. :-)

agree...

I think it would help us if Houston loses to Tulsa next week (very likely) and TCU doesn’t make it into the top 14.

Therefore, we need the folks in front of us to lose but the ones behind us to stay about where they are.

by ID_hawkman on Nov 20, 2011 9:21 AM PST up reply actions

plus if Tulsa wins it should get them into the top 25

I saw better play in the secondary

We have young players and mistakes were still made, but I saw 2-4 players around the ball and a lot of completions that were well covered/contested by us (Lindley is a great QB).

It seems to me that Coach K’s marching orders to the secondary were to be very conservative. Don’t bite on play fakes, wait until you see the ball in the air before closing on the receiver, watch those double moves, and don’t get beat deep. This led to a lot of underneath completions but you have to start somewhere and I think it’s just a matter of coaching them up throughout the remainder of the season so they are ready for the Bowl game.

A spread offense like OU or OkSt. still scares the heck out of me and so maybe we will get a glimpse of our personnel packages and how they deal with that style of attack when Wyoming comes to town.

And Hightower played so much better this week than last week! That PI call on him was garbage, even the announcers said so. I was impressed with Bryan Douglas stepping up too. Great job all around, they didn’t get burnt all game like last week.

Kellen / BSU looked Great in its 2 minute drill at the end of the 1st half.

Is it because we finally find some deep threats?

P.S. Downer alert… Kellen “only hit” 70% of his passed, which probably puts him out of the race for highest single season pass completions. I don’t know what it does for his career pass completions race.

We are still hurting, and it shows, BUT

lots of heart and hard work today. Was very proud of those kids. DJ must be hurt too bad to play? I was not able to watch past our first TD but noticed he had no carries in the stats.

Stanford does not deserve to be above us, but they still will be. The idiot announcers actually said “Stanford’s NC game hopes may not be over.” What nonsese. I think we will be 9th tomorrow or at best 8th, unfortunately. I fully expect Houston to pass us and for OSU, Oregon and OU to stay ahead of us, despite their losses. We will pass Clemson. TCU won’t move up more than a couple slots, hopefully, cuz everybody between them and us won except Nebraska.

Tyler Shoemaker is not only a great receiver, about to pass the single season TD record, but he may have the record for onside kick recoveries too?

Makinde? Really? He was so schooled in the TCU game. Burned several times and gave up the 1st down when we had TCU pinned on the 1 yard line. I think he has a lot of work to do and until he fixes things, I say keep Hightower in there.

BCS hopes were already dashed by tcu winning

It doesn’t matter because a non aq school must win there conference first and foremost to be eligible for a bcs bowl….Boise did not and there’s no way we can share the conference with tcu if they lose because we would need a three way tie with tcu and unlv to get a share. TCU owns the tiebreaker against us be cause they beat us and with only two teams tied atop the standings it goes to head to head matchup. The only MW team that has a shot at BCS game is TCU….Boise had to follow on criteria which was win there conference and they didnt

by Jay Weston on Nov 20, 2011 7:29 AM PST up reply actions

Well here is the answer we all want

In the SEC, the “Conference of Doom”, there are 5 teams in the top 14 (before today’s BCS results are in; they will only move up later in the day).

Those five teams have only lost to each other, Auburn (USC lost to them) and one other team

Seems to me like there is only one team in the country that can handle the SEC.

Make the match: BSU vs. the SEC winner!!

by Jeff Albertson on Nov 20, 2011 7:01 AM PST reply actions

It all comes down to TV ratings

The SEC has a good following as does the Pac 12 and the Oklahomas. BSU has become more of a national team as well as TCU but they still don’t have the draw as these other schools. You’ll notice this in the rankings. As long as thier undefeated {BSU-TCU} they’ll stay at the top. Lets see what happens today when the rankings come out. I’ll bet we are still behind a bunch of two loss teams. Let’s just hope we get accepted to a good bowl game.

It is frustrating

I think that once Gavins tore his ACL, things were going to play out the way they did. The secondary was a weak link to begin with, and losing him was a terrible blow. But I suppose that if I followed Stanford, or Clemson, or Ok State or whoever, I would be able to point to an injury that was just too much to overcome, or a bit of bad luck that struck at the wrong moment.

Amen

Statesman blogs and poison ivy are to be avoided at all costs. This place has some very nice people.

“How ya gonna keep ‘em down on the farm once they’ve seen Paree?”

BXVI

(That’s a joke, friend.)

Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they, too, have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexations to the spirit.

The statesmen blog is awful but on here...

we have better anti-troll defense procedures. Some of the idiots lose track of their alternate relalities over there.

Dare you to find a cooler picture. SSgt Clay "Dirt" Thurston (above, left) sent OBNUG this picture of him and pal TSgt Seth "Tidy" Randleman from Afghanistan. The boys are standing in front of an A-10 Warthog and proudly displaying their second favorite flag. Thanks for your service, guys...and come home safe!
