Boise State basketball versus Utah: Five things you should know

Pardon the Boise State football interruption, but there's some basketball news to share. Boise State hosts Utah tonight at Taco Bell Arena. And yes, I mean the real Utah. Not Southern Utah or Eastern Utah or Utah School of Mines. We're talking the real, live Utah Utes of the Pac-12 conference.

Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. MT, and to get you ready for some Bronco basketball, here is some info on one of BSU's most anticipated games of the year.

1. The game is being broadcast on The Mtn. television channel, which I hear exists in some people's homes. Hooray!

2. Boise State could actually win this game. Utah lost its exhibition opener, 61-60, to Adams State. The Utes bareley beat San Diego Christian College, 58-55, on Monday night in the season opener. Utah has 13 newcomers on its roster.

Star-divide

3. Former Idaho Stampede head coach Larry Krystkowiak is the first-year head coach for the Utes. It's not exactly Nick Saban returning to LSU, but it's something.

4. Boise State looked excellent in its season opening win over Colorado Christian. True freshman guard Derrick Marks had 20 points on 8-for-8 shooting, including - and I am contractually obligated to mention this - a dunk.

5. The last time Boise State and Utah met (edit: in Boise) was in a 1987 NIT that Utah fans fondly remember as the one where Bronco fans were visibly shaking the basket while a Utah player attempted game-winning free throws. He missed both free throws, by the way, and the Broncos won. Bonus points if you can name the Broncos' head coach at the time.

Your turn

Are you going to the game tonight? Watching on TV? Ironing your Kellen Moore jersey instead? How do you feel about Boise State's chances? Share your thoughts in the comments.

How many going to the game tonight? I’m hoping we can fill up The Pavilion this year.

A side of diarrhea.

Won’t touch that place.

They played Utah last year in Utah.

I’m Interested to see if Dremic can work his magic tonight and show why he is the best player for the Broncos. I like what I see already this year. Rice got some big guys with some muscle interested to see how they do.

I live in SLC, Utah is terrible.. In a preseason interview Coach Krystkowiak even admitted that it might be a long season.. Hopfully the Broncos come out strong! Lets get the W!

Can't be...

All the radio spots say that “Pac-12 Powerhouse Utah” is coming to town.

UGA fans are eligible twice: once for the uniforms, and twice for the involuntary surgery at the hands of Dr. Kellen Moore.

Writing from SLC

12,480 capacity at TBA…it’ll be awesome to see it full and rocking. Rice can do it!
Good comments on our Broncos from the MTN halftime dudes.
Last year in SLC we were up 16 in second half before losing…
that won’t happen this year!

Go Broncos!

Powerhouse Utah?

Utes look awful. Can’t blame the radio spots for trying to promote the game.
Drmic looks great.

They must have been thinking about the football team, oh wait.

Wow, awesome game!

I can’t say enough about the improvement in our shooting, especially beyond the arc. We’ve got an exciting season ahead of us!

Boise State looked good but hard to gauge since Utah is terrible.

Drmic is going to be fun to,watch and he plays with a savvy that is rarely seen in a true freshman. They definitely rely on outside jump shots which could be bad if they go cold, but they have more shooters than last year so it maybe everyone won’t be cold at once. I like the rotation of Watkins and Buckner inside and for a wing player, Bropleh is a physical specimen.

Kudos to the student secton for trying to be rowdy. Loved the singing of, “It’s a small world” when 5’11" Josh Watkins was shooting free throws.

students

did the “i’m a little tea pot” last game, for basically the same reason, a small guy was at the line.

Hopefully, the students that went will realize it’s much more fun when people actually go! I showed up a couple minutes late and missed out on a shirt :/ maybe saturday!

Love the student section getting into

The Aussie, Aussie, Aussie, Oi, Oi, Oi chant is going to be a fun one, with the way Drmic is playing already I think we’ll be learning quite a few Australian sports chants.

Go Broncos!

Love it! Maybe Coach will make us in to a basketball powerhouse and the BIG EAST will be wanting this program too!

by KyleWilson01 on Nov 16, 2011 9:26 PM PST reply actions

ha!

basketball doesn’t necessarily need to be in a good conference though. I think it was mentioned in another thread, we can tourney it up if we’re good and in a mediocre conference. Yeah, playing big names would attract attendance and help the program out, but I’d rather be like Gonzaga, continue to be a powerhouse in a mediocre conference. Gonzaga is barely seen as a mid major these days. It’s amazing.
